Upgrading a TP-Link router from Wi-Fi 5 to Wi-Fi 6 mainly changes how efficiently it can handle several active devices—not necessarily how fast one device gets online. Wi-Fi 5 is 802.11ac; Wi-Fi 6 is 802.11ax. A Wi-Fi 6 router is most worth considering when your network feels congested and your devices support the newer features. It is not a guaranteed speed boost or an automatic fix for weak coverage.
What changes between Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6?
The generation names refer to different wireless standards: Wi-Fi 5 is 802.11ac, while Wi-Fi 6 is 802.11ax. The practical distinction is not just a higher theoretical speed ceiling. Wi-Fi 6 adds ways for a compatible router to allocate wireless resources more efficiently when multiple devices are communicating.

OFDMA helps organize busy networks
Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) lets a Wi-Fi 6 router divide channel resources to serve multiple devices more efficiently. That can help in a home where several devices are active at once, but it does not promise full speed for every device simultaneously. The router and clients must support the relevant feature, and the result depends on the specific equipment. TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 6 technical guide explains OFDMA and related features.
MU-MIMO can serve multiple devices
Multi-user, multiple-input, multiple-output (MU-MIMO) is another technology for handling traffic to and from multiple devices. Wi-Fi 6 expands these capabilities, but practical gains depend on the router’s implementation and whether clients support the relevant functions.

Other features depend on the products
Wi-Fi 6 can operate on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but routers do not all have the same band configuration. Target Wake Time (TWT) is also associated with Wi-Fi 6; any effect on a device’s power use depends on supported router and client hardware. Neither feature means that every Wi-Fi 6 router behaves identically.
What the speed figures do—and do not—tell you
TP-Link Editorial Group’s comparison, published June 4, 2026, lists approximate theoretical maximums of 3.5 Gbps for Wi-Fi 5 and 9.6 Gbps for Wi-Fi 6. These are manufacturer-stated theoretical ceilings, not typical home results or independent speed-test measurements. TP-Link notes that actual performance depends on factors including the internet plan, device placement, and how many devices are connected at once. Read TP-Link’s Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6 comparison.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
A router’s wireless capability is only one part of the connection. Your internet plan, client device, placement, local interference, and network workload all affect the speed you experience. A faster-sounding standard cannot make a slower internet plan deliver more bandwidth, nor can its headline number predict the speed of an individual device.
Will your existing devices work with a Wi-Fi 6 TP-Link router?
Older Wi-Fi devices can connect to a newer router, but they retain the capabilities of their own wireless hardware. A Wi-Fi 5-only device does not gain Wi-Fi 6 features just because the router supports them. Conversely, TP-Link says Wi-Fi 6 devices can connect to a Wi-Fi 5 router, but they operate at Wi-Fi 5 performance and do not use Wi-Fi 6-specific features.

Before upgrading, list the devices that matter most—such as phones, laptops, streaming devices, and consoles—and check their supported wireless standards. A Wi-Fi 6 router is more likely to help when compatible clients are among the devices contributing to a busy network.
Will Wi-Fi 6 fix dead zones?
Not necessarily. A newer wireless generation does not remove the physical limits imposed by distance, walls, floors, or router placement. If the main problem is weak signal in distant rooms or on another floor, first consider whether repositioning the router or using a mesh system is a better fit. TP-Link identifies mesh as a possible coverage option for large or multistory homes; it is a coverage choice, not a requirement for moving to Wi-Fi 6.

Does a Wi-Fi 6 router guarantee WPA3?
No. WPA3 support is specific to the router model, its firmware, and the devices connecting to it. Clients also need WPA3 support to use WPA3 protection. Some compatible TP-Link products offer a mixed WPA3/WPA2 mode for networks that still include older devices. Check your exact model’s documentation and settings rather than assuming the Wi-Fi generation determines security support. TP-Link’s WPA3 compatibility guidance explains the client and mixed-mode requirements.

| Your situation | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Several devices are active, and the network struggles under load | Wi-Fi 6 may handle concurrent traffic more efficiently, especially if the relevant clients support its features. |
| Your current Wi-Fi 5 router meets your household’s needs | Keeping it is reasonable; a new standard name alone does not ensure a noticeable improvement. |
| The main complaint is poor signal in distant rooms | Look at placement or a mesh option for coverage; a generation upgrade alone may not remove dead zones. |
| You are buying new equipment now | Compare Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 7 options available in your market, including their actual features and cost. The available comparison does not establish that Wi-Fi 7 is always better value. |
Base the decision on the symptom you want to fix, the devices you use, and the router’s capabilities—not on a theoretical maximum in isolation. TP-Link’s comparison characterizes Wi-Fi 6 as a step up in speed, multi-device performance, and traffic management, while also qualifying that real-world results depend on setup and workload.
