If YouTube won’t let you remix a Short or another video, the source may be private or restricted, its creator may have disabled remixing, or copyright and music licensing rules may limit its use. If you own the video, you can check its Shorts remixing setting in YouTube Studio—but changing that setting does not override privacy restrictions or someone else’s rights.
First, identify which feature you’re trying to use
YouTube offers more than one way to make a Short from existing material, and their eligibility rules differ:

- Remix someone else’s video or Short: The source’s visibility, creator settings, copyright status, and applicable music rights can affect whether remix tools are available.
- Allow others to remix a video you own: You can manage the video’s Shorts remixing setting in YouTube Studio, subject to any separate rights restrictions.
- Edit your own long-form video into a Short: YouTube’s Edit into a Short feature is for your own public long-form uploads. Private or unlisted videos and videos with third-party copyright claims don’t qualify for this feature, according to YouTube’s instructions.
A missing button is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The owner’s settings, the source’s rights, and the feature you selected all matter.
Why a video may not be available to remix
YouTube lets people make Shorts using songs from its library, original audio from many Shorts and long-form videos, and video segments from many videos. Not every video is eligible. YouTube lists privacy settings and copyright ownership among the reasons a source may be unavailable; a private video or one claimed by a third-party copyright owner who has not made it available for Shorts are examples. Creators can also limit remixing or delete a source. Partners using Studio Content Manager have additional controls, and music licensing can prevent a remix. See YouTube’s general remix guidance.

- The source is private or otherwise restricted. You may not be able to remix a video that its owner has not made available to you.
- The creator has limited remixing. A creator can opt out of video remixing; Content Manager partners can control audio and video remixing.
- A copyright claim or music restriction applies. A rights holder’s settings or a music license may block some or all remix methods.
- The source was deleted or its remix use was restricted. This can affect remixes that already exist, not just attempts to create new ones.
If you’re trying to remix somebody else’s source, you generally can’t change its visibility, creator setting, or rights status. If it’s your own upload, check its visibility and Studio settings first. A rights claim or music-partner arrangement may require action by the relevant rights holder or partner; a standard creator setting cannot override those restrictions.
How to allow remixing on a video you own
YouTube says Shorts are opted into remixing by default, but creators can opt out of video remixing. If you own the video and want to check or change its setting, use YouTube Studio:

- Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content from the left menu.
- Click the video’s title or thumbnail to open its settings.
- Scroll down and select Show more.
- Find Shorts remixing and choose whether to allow remixing.
- Select Save.
YouTube also says remixing preferences can be changed in bulk or during upload. These controls govern remix permissions; they do not make a private or rights-restricted video eligible when another requirement prevents its use. Content Manager partners have broader audio and video remix controls, as described in YouTube’s remix guidance.

Music-partner rules are a separate case
YouTube’s music-eligibility guidance is specifically for music partners with a Shorts agreement; it is not a checklist that every creator can inspect or fix. For those partners, availability can depend on whether the source music video is public, its claim and asset arrangement, whether the match policy blocks use, and whether the relevant ownership and Shorts-agreement conditions are met in the viewer’s territory. If ownership or an agreement is missing in a territory, the video may not be eligible there. YouTube also notes that a third-party claim can prevent visual remix features even when audio remixing remains possible. Details are in YouTube’s music eligibility guidance.

For music videos, YouTube describes Cut as using a 1–5 second segment and Sound as using up to 90 seconds of audio; some partner agreements may limit music-video audio use to 30 seconds. These are feature limits, not a promise that any particular source can be remixed. Consult YouTube’s remix instructions for the relevant feature details.
If you upload a video made outside YouTube’s creation tools, you need approval for copyrighted material it contains. YouTube warns that unauthorized material can lead to a Content ID claim or removal following a valid copyright takedown notice. Changing the remix setting does not clear those rights issues.

What happens to remixes that already exist?
A remix being unavailable is different from an existing remix being restricted later. If the source creator deletes the original or limits remixing, YouTube says audio remixes are muted, changed to unlisted, and scheduled for deletion in 30 days; YouTube emails the remixer. Before deletion, the remixer can download the video without the remixed audio. Video remixes are deleted when the source is deleted or its use is restricted, and YouTube cautions that the remixer may not have a license to upload the same video remix again.
