The video itself also keeps its original proportions: filling more of the display may require cropping the edges. On some Samsung Galaxy foldables, Flex mode can place video in the upper part of the screen and browsing or controls below it.
Why does YouTube change when you open or fold your phone?
A foldable phone does not offer one fixed screen shape. Its cover screen and inner display have different dimensions, and opening or partly folding the device changes the area available to an app. YouTube responds to the space it has, so its player and surrounding interface may not look the same in each posture.

Three separate effects can appear together and seem like one problem:
- Video framing: The uploaded video has its own aspect ratio, or width-to-height shape. The player adapts to that shape, which can leave unused space around the image or make the picture appear smaller than the screen.
- App layout: YouTube’s controls and browsing interface can rearrange to suit a different screen area or a partly folded posture.
- Display settings and software: On Galaxy devices, full-screen settings and app compatibility can affect how YouTube uses the display. The available behavior is not established as universal across foldable brands or models.
To narrow down what you are seeing, note whether it happens on the cover screen, the open inner display, or only when the phone is partly folded. Then consider whether the change is in the video’s framing, the position of YouTube’s controls, or both.

Why doesn’t YouTube fill the foldable screen?
A video’s shape may not match the shape of the screen. YouTube’s Android player adapts to the video’s format: in portrait orientation, the player becomes taller for square or vertical video and shorter for widescreen video. As a result, the video window does not necessarily use every part of a foldable display.
When the display and video have different proportions, preserving the entire image can leave space around it. Making the image fill more of the display instead can enlarge it beyond its original framing, cutting off some of the picture at the edges. Those are different ways of fitting one shape into another; neither guarantees that the whole screen will show video without cropping.
For example, a vertical clip can use much of a tall portrait player, while a traditional 16:9 upload is relatively wide and short when placed on the same portrait screen. A square upload falls between those cases. Switching from a narrow cover display to a wider inner display changes the available rectangle again, so the same upload can appear larger, smaller, or surrounded by different amounts of empty space without the file changing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThere is one further distinction: black bars may be part of the uploaded video itself. If they are encoded into the picture, they are not empty screen space for YouTube to remove. Zooming can change the visible framing of the video, but it cannot strip out bars that are part of its image.
What does YouTube do in Samsung Flex mode?
On a compatible Samsung Galaxy foldable, Flex mode can give an app a layout suited to a partly folded phone. Samsung and Google announced a YouTube optimization for the Galaxy Z Flip on April 22, 2020. In that specific example, the phone’s display split into two 4-inch screen areas: video appeared in the upper area, while browsing or controls occupied the lower area.
The announcement described different treatment for different video shapes. Square and vertical videos nearly filled the upper area, while 16:9 widescreen video was centered there. This is a historical, model-specific example—not a promise that every foldable, every Samsung model, or every current YouTube release will use the same layout.

That split-screen behavior is intentional for hands-free use. The lower portion can provide room to browse or interact while the upper portion remains dedicated to playback. It can therefore look as if YouTube has shrunk the player, even though the app is responding to the phone’s hinge posture and reserving a separate interaction area.

Samsung’s support information also notes that Flex mode compatibility varies by app. A layout that appears on one device or software version may not appear on another, and the available feature notes can differ by model. If YouTube’s controls move or the video occupies only part of the display while the phone is bent, that can reflect a posture-specific app layout rather than a playback fault.
What does zoom-to-fill change?
On supported Galaxy devices, Samsung says you can spread two fingers apart on the video to zoom in, then pinch to restore the original framing. Zoom makes the displayed image larger, but it does so by cropping some of the original frame when the video and display have different aspect ratios. It is a choice between a larger image and seeing more of the full picture.
The crop can remove portions at the sides or top and bottom, depending on how the video and screen differ. Check faces, subtitles, scoreboards, or other edge content after zooming; those details may be outside the visible area. Returning to the original framing is useful when you need the complete composition rather than a picture that reaches more of the screen.
Samsung says the zoom gesture is unavailable when the video and display already share an aspect ratio. Also, it cannot remove black borders encoded into the video itself. If zoom is not offered, or if bars remain after zooming, those limitations may explain the result rather than a failed gesture.

- Test the video framing: While a video is playing, spread two fingers apart on the image to zoom in. Pinch to return to the original framing. Check whether the larger view crops important details at the edges.
- Check the fullscreen app setting: Open Settings → Display → Full screen apps and make sure YouTube is selected where that setting applies. This setting concerns how the app uses the display; it does not change the video’s encoded content or guarantee that every video will fill the screen.
- Compare phone positions: Try YouTube on the cover screen, with the phone fully open, and—if supported—in the partly folded posture. A difference limited to one position may be due to the available layout or Flex mode compatibility.
- Compare several video formats: Test a vertical or square clip and a conventional 16:9 video. If only one format leaves large areas around the picture, the aspect ratio is probably the main factor.
- If playback behaves abnormally, refresh the app state: Update YouTube, then consider restarting the phone or clearing YouTube’s cache. These are general Galaxy support steps, not guaranteed fixes for every foldable or every display issue.
After changing a setting, close and reopen YouTube and test the same video in the same posture. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the setting, the video format, or the hinge position caused the difference.
How to tell a layout change from a cropping problem
Look at what changes when the phone moves between positions. If the video stays intact but controls or browsing move to a different area, the change is primarily in the app layout. If the controls stay in place but the visible edges of the picture change after a zoom gesture, the change is in video framing. If the image has empty space around it, its aspect ratio may not match the display; if dark bars remain inside the image itself, they may be embedded in the upload.
A useful comparison is to check four conditions: cover screen versus inner screen, fully open versus Flex mode, original framing versus zoom-to-fill, and one video aspect ratio versus another. This helps isolate which variable is changing without assuming that every difference is a fault.

Pay attention to whether the difference follows the phone or the video. If many videos change when you unfold the device, the available layout or display configuration is more likely involved. If one upload has bars or an unusual crop everywhere, its production format may be responsible. YouTube can adapt the player, but it cannot rewrite the dimensions or remove borders that were included in the upload.
Why can the same video look different on the cover and inner screens?
The cover and inner displays are separate rectangles with different proportions. YouTube calculates a player for the rectangle currently available, then fits the video into it. A 16:9 video may look relatively wide on the cover screen but appear with more surrounding space on a tall inner display. A vertical video can have the opposite impression, using more of the taller area when the phone is opened.
Orientation matters as well. Rotating or unfolding the phone can change the player’s height and width, while a partly folded posture may reserve an entire section for controls. These are layout calculations, not evidence that the video quality or resolution has changed.

Does a fullscreen setting force every video to fill the display?
No. Samsung’s Settings → Display → Full screen apps option controls how an app is allowed to use the device’s display where the setting applies. It cannot change the source video’s aspect ratio, remove encoded bars, or guarantee a crop-free image on every screen. YouTube still has to balance the video’s shape with the available player area.

Feature names and menu locations can differ by Galaxy model and software version. Other foldable manufacturers may expose different controls, and the cited Samsung behavior should not be treated as a universal Android rule.
When can you identify the cause—and when can’t you?
The official guidance supports a general explanation of adaptive video playback, Samsung’s documented Flex mode behavior, and Galaxy-specific display checks. It does not establish a single layout for every foldable maker, phone model, operating-system version, or YouTube app release. Nor does it show how often YouTube fails to fill a foldable screen.
A specific unusual thumbnail, crop, or layout cannot be diagnosed from the fact that a phone folds alone. The relevant details include the phone model, operating-system and app versions, whether the phone is open or partly folded, and what exactly changes on screen. Without those details, the best-supported approach is to distinguish the video’s framing from YouTube’s layout and then check the Galaxy settings that apply to the device.
What information should you record before asking for help?
Write down the exact foldable model, Android and YouTube versions, and whether the behavior occurs on the cover screen, the fully open display, or only in Flex mode. Note the video’s apparent format, whether fullscreen or zoom was used, and whether the bars are outside the picture or visibly encoded within it. A screenshot showing the entire display is more useful than a cropped screenshot of the player alone.
Those details let support staff separate a model-specific Flex layout from a general aspect-ratio result. They also prevent a common mistake: treating one user’s “YouTube issue on fold” as proof of a widespread failure. An isolated layout difference may be expected behavior for that device, posture, app build, or video format.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn’t YouTube fill my foldable screen?
The video and the current screen may have different aspect ratios. YouTube preserves the video’s shape, which can leave space around it; zoom-to-fill enlarges the picture but crops its edges.
Why do YouTube controls move to the bottom when my phone is bent?
A compatible Samsung Flex mode layout can reserve one part of the display for video and another for browsing or controls. Samsung’s April 22, 2020 Galaxy Z Flip example placed video above and interaction below.
Can zoom remove every black bar?
No. Zoom can change framing, but bars encoded into the uploaded video are part of the image and remain. Zoom is also unavailable when the video and display already share an aspect ratio.
Does every foldable support the same YouTube Flex mode?
No. Samsung says Flex mode compatibility varies by app, and the documented two-4-inch-screen layout was a model-specific Galaxy Z Flip example. Other models, brands, and software versions may behave differently.
Will Samsung’s Full screen apps setting make every video edge-to-edge?
No. It affects how the app uses the display where the setting applies, but it cannot change the upload’s aspect ratio or remove encoded borders.
How can I tell whether the problem is YouTube or the video?
Test several formats in the same phone position. If only one upload has bars or an unusual crop, its source framing may be responsible. If controls or the player change whenever the phone posture changes, the layout or device settings are more likely involved.
What should I provide when reporting an unusual foldable layout?
Include the phone model, Android and YouTube versions, display posture, fullscreen or zoom state, the video format if known, and a full-screen screenshot. Those details are needed for a device-specific diagnosis.

YouTube looks different on a foldable because three variables change together: the video’s aspect ratio, the phone’s available screen layout, and device-specific software such as Samsung Flex mode. Compare cover, open, and partly folded positions; test original framing against zoom; and check Galaxy’s Full screen apps setting. Expect tradeoffs: filling more space can crop the picture, and encoded black bars cannot be removed.
