YouTube Live Redirect hands viewers off when the source stream or Premiere ends; it does not promise to keep them on the finished broadcast until the selected destination goes live. If that destination is still upcoming, the handoff can happen first. Viewers may need to wait briefly for the screen to reload, and anyone with autoplay turned off must click play.
What happens when Live Redirect runs
There are two separate events: the source broadcast ends, then YouTube directs viewers to the destination selected in the source stream’s Redirect setting. YouTube says autoplay moves viewers to the chosen live stream or Premiere once the source ends. The destination can be an active or upcoming live stream, or an upcoming Premiere.

That means a redirect to an upcoming broadcast can occur before that broadcast begins. YouTube does not describe Live Redirect as a holding feature that keeps viewers on the source until the destination is live. It also does not specify exactly what every device displays during the interval before an upcoming destination starts, so a particular waiting screen or delay cannot be guaranteed.

What viewers may see during the handoff
YouTube advises allowing a few seconds for the viewer’s screen to reload; its stream-settings guidance gives approximately two seconds as a guide. The experience can vary, and YouTube does not promise a fixed transition time. If autoplay is disabled on a viewer’s device, that viewer must click play to continue to the destination.

Check the redirect settings and eligibility
- Confirm the selected destination. In YouTube Studio, open Content, select Live, edit the source video, open Customization, and check Redirect.
- Check the destination’s status and type. Confirm whether it is an active or upcoming live stream, or an upcoming Premiere. If it is upcoming, it may not have started when viewers arrive.
- Check permission from a receiving channel. If the destination belongs to another channel, that channel must allow redirects from yours. YouTube’s settings allow permission for subscribed channels, all channels, or specifically approved channels; the subscribed-channel default depends on public subscriptions.
- Allow for the reload. Ask viewers to wait a few seconds for the screen to refresh before concluding that the handoff failed.
- Check autoplay. Viewers who have disabled autoplay need to click play themselves.
- Check sender eligibility. YouTube lists more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes as requirements for creators sending a redirect.
If the redirect still appears to stop
First establish whether the destination was already live, whether the receiving channel permitted the redirect, and whether autoplay was enabled. If the behavior continues, note the viewer’s device, YouTube app or browser, autoplay setting, destination status, and whether a redirect confirmation appeared. YouTube’s published instructions explain the intended behavior, but do not establish one universal cause for every delay or failed handoff.
