A YouTube Live recording can appear as unavailable in a playlist when the recording is private, the playlist is private, or a viewer is not signed in to the account invited to watch a private video. A public playlist does not make a private recording public. Check the recording and playlist visibility separately in YouTube Studio; if no recording exists, the stream may not have been archived.
Check whether the recording or playlist is private
YouTube video visibility and playlist visibility are separate settings. A playlist may be public while one of its recordings remains private, so viewers can encounter an unavailable item even though they can open the playlist.

- In YouTube Studio, open Content and select the Live tab.
- Find the affected live recording and inspect its visibility. If appropriate, change it to Public or Unlisted, then save.
- Separately, open Content > Playlists and inspect the playlist’s visibility. Change it if needed and save.
Public videos are broadly viewable. Unlisted videos can be watched by people with the link, while private videos are restricted to the owner and selected viewers. Changing the playlist setting alone does not change an individual recording’s privacy. See YouTube’s visibility settings guidance and its playlist privacy instructions.
Know who can watch each visibility type

These are general YouTube visibility behaviors; exact interface labels may change. Unlisted is not the same as private: a link holder can watch unlisted content, but a private recording requires the appropriate account access. YouTube explains private-video access in its visibility guidance.

If the video is private, check the viewer’s account
If the owner intends the recording to remain private, ask the invited viewer to sign in to the exact Google account that was granted access and open the specific video link. Being signed into a different account, or looking only at the channel homepage, may not provide access. The owner can verify which viewers have been selected in the video’s sharing settings.
Consider the older unlisted-video change
A possible explanation for an older upload is YouTube’s 2021 privacy update. YouTube says that starting July 23, 2021, unlisted videos uploaded before January 1, 2017 were made private unless their owners opted out. The change also applied to some older unlisted playlists. This policy is one possible cause, not an explanation for every private live archive.

If the affected recording is in that group, check the owner’s Studio settings and the options YouTube offers for that item. Depending on availability, those options include keeping it private, restoring legacy unlisted status, making it public, or re-uploading. A re-upload gets a new URL and does not inherit associated data such as views or comments. See YouTube’s guidance on the older unlisted-video change.

An unavailable playlist item and a missing archive are different problems. First look for the stream under Studio Content > Live. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If no archive was created, changing privacy settings cannot make that recording available.

For future broadcasts, YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. A local backup can help preserve a copy, but it does not recover an archive that was never captured. Read YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance for current details.
