Vertical live streams give creators another way to reach mobile viewers: eligible streams can appear in YouTube’s Shorts feed, where people who do not already subscribe may discover them. That makes vertical worth testing when the subject fits a tall frame—not a guarantee of more viewers, watch time, or revenue.
What vertical live adds
A vertical stream is a 9:16, phone-oriented version of a live broadcast. YouTube says viewers can find and scroll through vertical live streams in the Shorts feed, including viewers who are not subscribed to the channel. It is an additional discovery route, not a promise that YouTube will distribute a particular stream widely.

Live viewing is significant across YouTube: Senior Director of Product Management Aaron Filner wrote that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That platform-wide figure does not show that vertical outperforms horizontal or predict the results of an individual broadcast. (YouTube Blog, September 16, 2025.)
Should you stream vertical and horizontal at the same time?
If the broadcast works in both a phone-shaped frame and a landscape frame, dual-format streaming is a practical way to try Shorts-feed discovery without giving up a conventional 16:9 presentation. YouTube’s Live Control Room supports simultaneous 16:9 horizontal and 9:16 vertical output by default. The two views share one chat and one go-live notification with a shared URL.

In the Live Control Room, the vertical version defaults to a center crop. You can adjust zoom and position, or choose center crop, fit to phone width, or stacked layouts. Review the vertical preview before going live: a crop can exclude people, text, product details, or gameplay interface that remains visible in landscape. YouTube says vertical cannot be added after a stream has started, so choose and check the layout beforehand. Vertical-only metrics become available in Studio 24 hours after the stream. If the production needs genuinely different compositions rather than a crop or layout adjustment, YouTube also documents an RTMP(S) encoder approach for separate vertical and horizontal feeds. Consult the current Help instructions for the applicable setup before configuring an encoder.

Which creators should test vertical?
Vertical is a natural experiment when the important action fits a close, tall composition: a creator talking with chat, a focused demonstration, a quick update, or a Q&A. YouTube describes mobile live as useful for vlogging and quick updates. Encoder workflows can suit gaming, sports, concerts, and conferences, with hardware such as cameras, microphones, and preamps where the production calls for it. Those items are options, not YouTube requirements. (YouTube Help.)

Wide scenes, dense overlays, small on-screen text, and detailed gameplay interfaces deserve a careful framing check. Horizontal remains important for viewers on larger screens: YouTube Product Manager Barbara Macdonald said that in the U.S., over 30% of live watch time came from connected TVs in 2025. That is a U.S. viewing statistic, not a reason to avoid vertical; it is a reason to keep the landscape experience readable when TV viewers matter. (YouTube Blog, April 13, 2026.)
Monetization and community features
YouTube’s feature comparison lists memberships and gifted memberships for both orientations, while live pre-roll and mid-roll ads are listed for horizontal only. Feature availability does not establish how much any creator will earn. In an April 2026 update, YouTube also said viewers could send gifts on horizontal streams from mobile; it described personal ad-free windows associated with Super Chats, Super Stickers, or gifts, and said its system can hold back ads during peak live-chat engagement when automatic ads are enabled. Check eligibility and choose a setup
YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a streamer age of at least 16. YouTube says live chat or other features may be disabled on streams featuring 13- to 15-year-olds without a visibly accompanying adult. Confirm the current requirements before scheduling. - Phone: A straightforward fit for mobile-first vlogging or quick updates. A tripod or microphone may help, but neither is required by YouTube.
- Encoder: Useful when a production needs overlays or external hardware such as a camera, microphone, or preamp. Check the Live Control Room preview and both compositions before starting.
Run a useful test
- Pick a topic and time slot that you can reasonably repeat, then stream in dual format if both presentations make sense.
- Before each broadcast, inspect the vertical preview. Adjust zoom, position, or layout where needed, and verify that key subjects and information remain legible in both frames.
- Afterward, wait for vertical-specific Studio metrics to become available, then compare them alongside watch time, chat participation, returning viewers, and the goal you set for the stream.
- Repeat with comparable topics and time slots where possible. Note whether the crop or a different layout changed readability; do not treat one stream as proof of a general performance effect.
YouTube has not established an individual creator’s expected incremental reach, watch time, conversions, or revenue from switching to vertical. Its audience figures describe overall viewing, not a controlled vertical-versus-horizontal result.
