System sleep suspends normal application activity, so the encoder may stop sending the stream. You can turn off the display without putting the whole computer to sleep; the two are separate states in Windows (Microsoft Learn, System power states).
Screen off is not the same as computer asleep
A dark display does not necessarily mean your computer has stopped working. Microsoft describes a computer with its screen off as remaining fully running; system sleep, by contrast, changes the computer’s power state and interrupts the encoder’s normal work. So you can let the screen go dark while keeping the machine awake.

This applies when the livestream encoder is running on that computer. An OBS forum administrator gave the same practical guidance: the PC must be fully on to stream. That forum response is community guidance, not a formal OBS specification (OBS Project Forums).

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts, the current path in Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance (Power settings in Windows 11).
- Set Turn my screen off after to the interval you want. This controls the display and can be shorter than the broadcast.
- Set Make my device sleep after to a time longer than the planned stream, or choose an available setting that prevents sleep while the stream is running. Check the plugged-in and battery options that apply to your setup.
- Keep the computer connected to suitable power for a long broadcast. Streaming for hours can drain a laptop battery; the amount of runtime depends on the computer and conditions, and no general runtime can be assumed.
Windows also supports application requests to keep a system awake, but Microsoft cautions against holding a continuous sleep-prevention request indefinitely because it can drain the battery, especially on Modern Standby devices (System Sleep Criteria). For a scheduled overnight stream, use the built-in power settings and restore your usual sleep behavior afterward.

Mac
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Lock Screen and set when the display turns off for the power condition you use.
- When the Mac is connected to a power adapter, open System Settings > Battery and check Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, if that option is available on your Mac.
- Leave the Mac connected to power for a long broadcast and verify that the encoder remains connected after the display turns off.
Apple documents the sleep option specifically for use with a power adapter; do not assume the same behavior applies on battery. Menu wording and option availability can vary with macOS release and Mac model. See Apple’s guidance: If your Mac sleeps or wakes unexpectedly.
If the stream still stops
Changing a sleep timeout addresses one possible cause, not every interruption. Check whether the display merely went dark or the computer actually slept, then inspect the encoder’s connection status and YouTube’s live dashboard. If the computer stayed awake, check the network connection and encoder status or logs; a dropped connection or encoder failure can also interrupt a stream. The symptom alone does not identify which cause occurred.

- Computer slept: revisit the sleep timeout for the power condition in use and extend it beyond the planned broadcast.
- Display went dark, but computer stayed awake: the display setting alone should not suspend the encoder. Check the encoder and network status instead.
- Laptop switched to battery: confirm that the battery sleep setting is suitable, or connect power. Power settings may differ between plugged-in and battery operation.
- Computer must be shut down or allowed to sleep: the encoder needs to run somewhere else—on another awake computer or a hosted service. That is a different setup from changing your local sleep timeout.
