Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your Xbox Series X won’t read a disc, first find out whether the problem follows that disc or stays with the console. Clean the disc gently, test it on another Xbox if possible, and try a different known-working disc in your Series X. Only after those checks should you try the documented full-shutdown fix. One failed disc alone does not show that the console’s optical drive is broken.
First, identify what is failing
There are two different problems: a disc that goes in but is not recognized, and a disc that will not eject. The steps below address reading first; if the disc is physically stuck, skip to the ejection steps. For reading problems, note whether one disc or several fail and whether the suspect disc works on another Xbox.

Clean and cross-test the disc
Check for dirt or visible damage
Inspect the disc, then wipe it gently with a soft, clean, slightly damp cloth to remove dust. A lint-free microfiber cloth is one suitable option. Retry the disc afterward. Cleaning may remove surface dirt, but it cannot be assumed to repair scratches or other physical damage.

- If you can, try the suspect disc on another Xbox. If it fails there too, the disc is the more likely source of the problem.
- Try a different disc that you know works in your Series X. This is a useful cross-check: if several known-good discs fail in this console, the console is more likely to be involved.
These checks help narrow down the source; they do not identify a particular failed component.

Try a full shutdown and restart
iFixit documents a power-mode change followed by a full shutdown as a troubleshooting attempt. Menu wording can change with Xbox software updates, so the path below is the one given in its guide:
- Open Settings > Profile & System > Settings > General > Power Mode & Start-Up.
- Choose Energy-Saving.
- Hold the Xbox button on the console for 10 seconds, until the console shuts down.
- Start the console again and retry the disc.
This may resolve a software glitch, but it is not a guaranteed fix. If multiple known-good discs still fail, move on to the repair decision rather than repeatedly cycling through the same steps.

If the disc will not eject
A disc that ejects normally but cannot be read is different from one trapped in the console. For a stuck disc, iFixit recommends trying ordinary controls first:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Restart the console, then press its eject button.
- Alternatively, open the controller guide, go to the Home screen, highlight the inserted disc, and press X.
- If those options fail, unplug the console’s power cord and cables before attempting manual ejection. The iFixit guide describes using a large, straightened paper clip in the eject hole along the bottom edge, near the round stand. Follow the guide’s instructions carefully.
When to seek repair
If several known-good discs fail in your Series X but work elsewhere, a console-side fault is more likely. That pattern does not prove the laser or any other specific part has failed. Microsoft’s repair guidance asks owners to check whether the device is supported for the repair, whether the part is likely to solve the issue, whether they have the necessary skills, and whether they have the correct tools.

Check eligibility before considering self-repair
Microsoft’s cited repair guide covers supported Xbox Series X Model 1882 units with 14-digit serial numbers; it says units with 12-digit serial numbers are not supported by that guide. Check Microsoft’s current regional eligibility and repair information before buying parts. If the device or repair is not supported, the part is not suitable, or you lack the skills or tools, Microsoft points owners toward an authorized service provider or out-of-warranty repair.
Optical-drive replacement is a later repair path
iFixit publishes a specific Xbox Series X optical-drive replacement guide. It requires the console to be fully powered down and unplugged, and warns that drive alignment matters during reassembly. This is not a routine first troubleshooting step; the existence of a replacement procedure does not establish that every replacement drive will work in every Series X. Consider it only after the disc and restart checks, and after confirming that the repair is appropriate for your console.
