Adding another access point (AP) does not automatically add usable Wi-Fi capacity. If APs overlap on the same channel, they share airtime; congestion and interference can trigger retries and lower throughput. Start by measuring performance in the slow spots, then check channels, placement, backhaul and client roaming before deciding whether you need another AP.
Why adding access points can make Wi-Fi slower
Overlapping APs can compete for the same airtime
Wi-Fi devices take turns transmitting on a channel. When multiple APs cover the same area on the same channel, they contend for airtime rather than creating a separate pool of capacity. Cisco Meraki’s guidance for high-density deployments says additional same-channel APs with overlapping coverage do not increase capacity. That is a reason to coordinate coverage and channels, not simply increase the AP count: Cisco Meraki: High Density Wi-Fi Deployments.

Congestion and interference cause retries
Nearby Wi-Fi networks and other sources of radio interference can leave less clean airtime for your devices. Poor channel conditions can produce more retries, latency and jitter, and lower throughput, as described in the Wireless Broadband Alliance’s In-Home Wi-Fi Industry Guidelines (2019). A connection can therefore feel slower even if the internet plan and AP count have not changed.

Wireless backhaul may share radio resources with clients
A wireless AP must carry traffic between itself and the main router or another AP as well as serve client devices. On some designs, the same radio handles both the AP-to-AP backhaul and client traffic; the WBA notes that this can constrain channel selection. The effect depends on the equipment and topology, so a wireless link is not automatically the problem, but it is worth checking how your AP system handles backhaul.

A device may stay connected to the wrong AP
Adding APs does not guarantee that a phone or laptop will promptly switch to the one with the stronger signal. The client device makes its own roaming decision. Apple documents roaming behavior and deployment considerations for Apple devices in Optimize your Wi-Fi networks for Apple devices. A shared network name alone does not ensure seamless roaming across every client and AP combination.
Measure where the slowdown happens
Use the same device and speed-test method for each measurement so the results are comparable. Microsoft recommends establishing a baseline and checking performance in different parts of the home; its Wi-Fi and your home layout guidance also points to nearby network congestion and channel choice.

- Test near the main router. Record the result and note which band the device uses, if that information is available.
- Test in the slow locations. Use the same device and test method, and note whether the spot is covered by more than one AP.
- Compare a wired connection if possible. A wired test can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem from an internet service or router bottleneck; it is a diagnostic comparison, not a promised performance result.
- Note the conditions. Record the connected AP, band and channel when your router or device exposes them, along with the time and location. Repeat tests under similar conditions after each change.
If both wired and Wi-Fi results are poor, adding or repositioning APs may not address the underlying issue. If wired performance is fine but wireless results vary by room, focus first on the radio environment, coverage and AP coordination.

Review the channel plan as a whole
For 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, Microsoft and Apple identify channels 1, 6 and 11 as non-overlapping choices. Apple’s deployment guidance states: “To avoid cochannel and adjacent channel interference in your network, use channels 1, 6, and 11, which don’t overlap.” Choose among the options supported by your equipment and suited to nearby networks; a channel that works well in one room or home may not be the best choice elsewhere.

This 2.4 GHz guidance is not a universal manual plan for every band or deployment. Channel width, local rules, client support and automatic channel management all matter. If your system manages channels automatically, check its settings and behavior rather than assuming it has the same features or controls as a business-oriented system. Meraki describes automatic channel adjustment for its own systems; that capability should not be assumed for every consumer router.
Adjust AP placement and power deliberately
Place APs to fill actual coverage gaps, not simply to maximize the number of strong signals in the same area. Apple recommends using a site survey to determine appropriate AP radio power. UK Government workplace guidance also treats channel selection and power management as ways to reduce contention and excessive overlap; that is a general deployment principle, not a home-specific power prescription. Avoid changing transmit power blindly: the result depends on the layout, neighboring networks and clients.

Find out whether the extra AP has wireless backhaul
Check whether the additional AP connects to the network over Ethernet or wirelessly, and whether its model uses the same radio for backhaul and client traffic. If running a cable is practical, wired backhaul is a design option to investigate because it avoids using a Wi-Fi radio link for that AP-to-network connection. The amount of improvement, if any, depends on your equipment and conditions; a cable does not guarantee a particular speed increase.
Change one thing at a time, then decide whether to keep the AP
- Capture the baseline in the good and slow locations before changing settings.
- Inspect nearby networks and channel conditions using the tools your router or device provides. Microsoft’s guidance recommends considering the local environment when choosing a channel.
- Review overlap and channels across the APs. Do not treat another AP on the same channel with overlapping coverage as a capacity upgrade.
- Review placement and power with the aim of covering the problem area without creating unnecessary overlap.
- Check backhaul and roaming in the affected spot, including which AP the client is actually using.
- Make one change and retest with the same device and method used for the baseline. If results get worse elsewhere, undo the change and try a different adjustment.
Keep an additional AP only if it improves coverage or capacity where needed without making the rest of the network worse. If you do need hardware, assess options by coverage in the problem area, wired or wireless backhaul, channel and radio coordination, compatibility with your router and clients, placement and setup effort, and cost. The right solution depends on the home and equipment; there is no universally correct AP count.
