A high-wattage charger can supply more power than a device is able—or willing—to draw. Charging speed depends on the device’s supported charging protocol and input limit, the charger’s output on the port you use, the cable, and conditions such as heat, battery settings, and other devices sharing the charger. USB-C describes the connector; it does not guarantee a particular charging speed.
Why a high-wattage charger may not charge quickly
USB-C is a connector, not a speed rating
USB-C describes the plug and port. It does not mean that every connected product supports the same charging protocol or power level. USB-IF states, “USB Type-C® is not USB Power Delivery”. A device with a USB-C port may use different charging capabilities, so check its model-specific requirements rather than assuming it supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD). USB-IF’s USB Type-C overview explains the distinction.

Power is negotiated between compatible devices
With USB PD, a charger offers supported power profiles and a compatible device requests the power it can use. The USB PD standard can support up to 240 W in compatible configurations, but that is a ceiling for supported equipment and full-featured cables—not the amount a phone or laptop automatically draws. USB-IF describes USB PD as enabling “more flexible power delivery along with data over a single cable.” Its USB Charger (USB Power Delivery) page details the standard.

In practice, the device’s own input limit matters. A charger marked with a high maximum wattage cannot make a device accept more power than its design allows. The charger’s rating also may describe its maximum output across supported conditions, not the output available from every port or combination of ports.

The cable and the connection can be limiting
Cable type and rating affect the charging path. Google says Pixel phones charge more slowly over USB-A-to-USB-C than with a USB-C adapter and USB-C cable. For its Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W Charger, Google requires an e-marker cable for charging above 60 W. That is a requirement for this particular charger, not a universal USB-C cutoff. See Google’s Pixel charging guidance and Pixel Flex charger specifications.
A loose, damaged, wet, or dirty connector can also interfere with charging. A wall outlet, adapter, or port that is not working as expected may be the cause rather than the charger’s headline wattage.

Heat, device use, and battery settings affect charging
Charging can slow while the device is being used, especially during demanding tasks that add heat. Google says Pixel devices may pause charging if they get too hot. Battery age and charging optimization features can also affect behavior; a device may slow as it approaches full or pause at a configured charge limit. These are general factors, while exact behavior and settings depend on the device maker and model. Google’s Pixel charging help, battery optimization guidance, and battery safety information describe Pixel-specific examples.
Other connected devices may share or change the output
Multiport chargers can allocate power differently when more than one device is connected. Google’s Pixel Flex Dual Port 67W Charger supports up to 67 W from one port with one device connected; with two devices, Google lists up to 60 W per port. Those figures describe that Google charger only. Other chargers have their own allocation rules, and the power available to a particular device may depend on which port it uses and what else is connected.

How to check what is limiting charging
- Check the device’s requirements. Look up the exact model on its manufacturer’s support or specifications page. Confirm its supported charging protocol and maximum input; do not infer USB PD support solely from the presence of a USB-C port.
- Try a direct, known-compatible setup. Connect the charger to a working wall outlet and use a cable and adapter documented as compatible with the device. If relevant, compare USB-C-to-USB-C charging with USB-A-to-USB-C.
- Inspect and reseat the connection. Unplug and reconnect both ends. Check the outlet, cable, adapter, and port for damage, debris, moisture, or an on-screen accessory warning. Google recommends checking the connection and port and trying another cable or adapter. Remove visible lint carefully; do not insert unsafe objects. Do not charge through a wet connector or ignore a manufacturer warning to disconnect.
- Test without other devices attached. Disconnect everything else from a multiport charger and see whether charging changes. If it does, consult the charger maker’s port-allocation rules and use the port appropriate for your device.
- Reduce heat and activity. If the device feels hot, stop demanding tasks and let it cool before charging again. Review battery-care or charging-optimization settings if charging slows near full or stops at a set limit.
- Escalate persistent problems. If the device still charges unusually slowly with known-compatible equipment, contact its manufacturer. A worn battery, damaged port, or other device fault may need attention.
What to compare before replacing a charger or cable
Choose accessories based on compatibility, not the largest wattage printed on the box. Check these specifications together:
- Device: supported protocol and maximum charging input for the exact model.
- Charger: supported output profiles and power available from the specific port you will use.
- Cable: stated power rating and any e-marker requirement specified by the charger or device maker.
- Shared use: how the charger divides or prioritizes output when multiple ports are occupied.
- Practical needs: number of ports and portability, once compatibility is established.
A compatible USB-C-to-USB-C cable or USB PD/PPS charger may help if the existing accessory is the bottleneck. It will not raise the device’s supported charging rate or override thermal limits, charging settings, or a charger’s port allocation.
