Why Your Upload Speed Is Hurting Work Calls—and How to Fix It

A fast download speed does not guarantee clear outgoing video. Check upload during the problem, compare wired and Wi-Fi calls, and rule out congestion and other causes before changing plans or hardware.

If coworkers struggle to hear or see you, a weak or unstable upload connection may be part of the problem: your device sends your camera and microphone data outward during a call. A fast download result alone does not show whether that outgoing connection is working well. But low upload is only one possible cause, so check the connection and the call setup before changing your internet plan or buying equipment.

Why upload speed affects what coworkers see and hear

Upload speed is the rate at which your connection sends data from your device to the internet. In a work call, that includes the audio and video you send to the meeting service and other participants. When outbound capacity is too low for the call—or varies sharply—your outgoing video may lose quality, and audio or video may lag or drop.

Upload and download are separate measures. Download speed describes what your device receives, such as other participants’ video. A high download result does not prove that your outgoing camera feed has enough capacity.

Speed is not the only factor. Wi-Fi congestion, latency, packet loss, other household traffic, VPN routing, device limits, and another participant’s connection can cause similar symptoms. Google Meet Help identifies bandwidth issues as a major cause of poor video quality, but a symptom by itself does not identify the cause: Google Meet troubleshooting guidance.

How much upload speed a video call may need

There is no single upload-speed threshold that guarantees good calls. Requirements depend on the meeting platform, whether the call is one-to-one or a group, and the video quality in use. Use platform figures as scenario-specific guidance, not as a universal standard.

Call scenario Platform guidance How to interpret it
Zoom, high-quality one-to-one video 600 kbps upload and 600 kbps download Zoom’s recommendation for this call type and quality, not a general minimum for every service. Zoom bandwidth requirements
Zoom, 720p one-to-one video 1.2 Mbps upload and 1.2 Mbps download Zoom’s recommendation for a 720p one-to-one call. Zoom bandwidth requirements
Zoom, 1080p one-to-one video 3.8 Mbps upload and 3.0 Mbps download Zoom’s recommendation for a 1080p one-to-one call. Zoom bandwidth requirements
Zoom, 720p group video 2.6 Mbps upload and 1.8 Mbps download Zoom’s recommendation for 720p group video. Zoom bandwidth requirements
Zoom, 1080p group video 3.8 Mbps upload and 3.0 Mbps download Zoom’s recommendation for 1080p group video. Zoom bandwidth requirements
Google large remote event when the connection seems slow At least 3.2 Mbps upload and 3.2 Mbps download Google Workspace Learning Center’s rule of thumb for this event-hosting context, not a general Meet requirement. Google Workspace event-hosting advice

These are vendor recommendations on current support pages accessed in 2026. They are not guarantees: apps may adapt call quality to network conditions, and actual results also depend on stability, equipment, settings, and other traffic.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Check whether upload is actually the problem

  1. Describe the symptom. Note whether other people have trouble hearing or seeing you, whether incoming video is affected too, and whether the issue occurs at particular times or locations.
  2. Measure during a bad call period. Run an internet speed test and record both upload and download. Repeat it to see whether the results are consistent, then compare them with your ISP plan and the guidance for your platform and call type. A speed test taken when the problem is absent may not reflect call-time conditions.
  3. Compare with call health when available. Microsoft Teams exposes measures such as round-trip time and packet loss. Teams lists under 200 ms round-trip time and under 2% packet loss as typical reference values; these are Teams call-health values, not universal standards. Teams also reports a send-limit metric. Microsoft notes, “This isn’t your ISP speed limit”—the metric describes the app’s send limit, not the maximum speed in your internet plan. See Microsoft Teams call-health guidance.

A low or inconsistent upload result during the trouble period supports investigating outbound capacity. If upload looks adequate, or the speed test is stable but calls still break up, look at Wi-Fi, latency, packet loss, competing traffic, the device, and the other participants rather than assuming the ISP speed is the cause.

Fix the most likely local problems first

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet

If you can, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet and compare call quality under similar conditions. If the wired call improves, the ISP connection may be adequate while the Wi-Fi link is the weak point. Use an existing or borrowed cable for the comparison before considering a purchase; a cable cannot raise an upload cap set by your ISP.

TP-Link Dual-Band AX3000 Wi-Fi 6 Wireless Gigabit Internet Router for Home | EasyMesh, VPN Clients & Server, HomeShield, OFDMA, MU-MIMO, USB 3.0, Secure by Design - Archer AX55
  • Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
  • A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
  • Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.

Wi-Fi band and placement can matter. Microsoft describes 2.4 GHz as having longer range but often more congestion, while 5 GHz is faster and less congested but has shorter range and passes through obstacles less effectively. Distance, walls, and nearby network activity can all affect results. See Microsoft’s guidance on improving a Teams connection.

Pause competing internet use

During a test call, pause large uploads and downloads, streaming, and other bandwidth-heavy household activity. Close nonessential apps and browser tabs that may be transferring data. Google advises limiting other internet activity during a video conference; this is especially useful as a diagnostic step because it shows whether shared use is crowding out the call. See Google Meet troubleshooting guidance and Google Workspace event-hosting advice.

Check the VPN, computer, and call setup

If your workplace permits it, compare a call with and without the VPN to see whether routing is affecting latency. Do not bypass a required work VPN or security policy. Also check that the intended camera and microphone are selected, close CPU-intensive apps, and confirm whether other participants have the same problem. Microsoft notes that both people on a call need enough bandwidth for high-quality video, so a problem on the other participant’s side can look like yours. See Microsoft’s connection and speed-test guidance.

When to contact your ISP or consider equipment

Compare repeated speed-test results with the upload speed in your internet plan. If wired tests remain substantially below the plan’s stated service during the times calls fail, contact your ISP with the test results and times. If the wired connection performs well but Wi-Fi does not, focus first on router placement, signal, and congestion.
