Why Your Smart TV’s Internet Is Slower Than Your Phone’s

A TV may be slower than a phone because of Wi-Fi range, band support, network activity, or an app issue. Use these checks to isolate the cause before buying equipment.

A smart TV can feel slower than a phone because it may be farther from the router, using a different Wi-Fi band, limited by older wireless hardware, or sharing capacity with other devices. First make sure the comparison is fair: test both on the same home Wi-Fi, beside the TV, with the phone’s cellular data turned off. If only one TV app is slow, the network may not be the problem.

Why a TV can be slower than a phone

The devices may not have the same connection conditions or capabilities. A phone beside the router may use a stronger signal or a different Wi-Fi band than a TV across the room. Some TV models also support fewer wireless options than newer phones; Samsung, for example, lists some 2018 TV series that support only 2.4 GHz. The exact capabilities depend on the TV model.

Band choice involves a trade-off: 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther, while 5 GHz often offers higher speeds at shorter range. Walls, furniture, cabinets, metal objects, and nearby interference can further weaken or destabilize the TV’s signal. In a mesh or dual-band setup, the phone and TV may also connect to different access points or bands.

Finally, devices share network capacity. Google Nest Help explains that each connected device competes with others for bandwidth. Downloads, uploads, game updates, and other heavy activity can affect streaming or testing on the TV. A phone comparison is not meaningful if the phone has switched to cellular data instead of using home Wi-Fi.

How to find out where the slowdown is

  1. Check whether other devices are slow. Test a phone on the same home Wi-Fi. If several devices are slow, restart the modem and router. If the problem continues, check for an outage or contact your internet provider.
  2. Make the phone comparison fair. Stand beside the TV, turn off cellular data, and confirm the phone is connected to the same home Wi-Fi network. In a mesh or dual-band setup, check whether it selected a different band or access point.
  3. Check the TV’s network status and signal. Use the TV’s network or connection-status screen, then temporarily move the TV or router if practical. Remove avoidable obstacles and avoid enclosing either device. If the TV supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, test each band separately at the TV’s location.
  4. Pause heavy network activity. Stop large downloads, uploads, and updates on other devices, then test the TV again. This helps show whether shared network use is contributing to the problem.
  5. Try another TV app. If one app is slow but others work normally, restart or update the affected app and check for TV software updates before changing network hardware.
  6. Try a phone hotspot briefly. Connect the TV to a hotspot to help distinguish a home-network problem from an issue with the TV’s Wi-Fi connection. Hotspot availability and charges depend on the carrier and plan; avoid extended streaming if mobile data is limited.
  7. Test Ethernet if the TV has a LAN port. Connect the TV to the router with a cable. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, focus on wireless signal, band support, router settings, or interference.
  8. Check the internet service if multiple devices remain slow. If several devices are slow even near the router, use the test recommended by your ISP or router maker. Contact the ISP if performance remains below your subscribed service or an outage is reported.

TV menu labels vary by brand, model year, and software version. If a setting is not where expected, use the TV manual or the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model.

When Ethernet, a repeater, or mesh may help

Ethernet cable

A wired connection is worth testing when the TV has an Ethernet/LAN port and a cable can reach the router. It may provide a more stable connection than Wi-Fi, but the slowest port or other component in the network path can still limit speed. Google recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 cable for Ethernet speeds above 100 Mbps; a higher-rated cable cannot make a slower TV port or network component faster.

Repeater or mesh point

Consider a repeater or an additional mesh point only after checking that weak coverage at the TV is the problem. Confirm compatibility with the router and place the added point where it receives a usable signal. It is not a guaranteed speed upgrade, and it will not fix a slow ISP connection, a single misbehaving app, unsupported TV Wi-Fi, or network congestion.
