If your Ring setup is stuck, identify the step that failed: app or QR scan, location, connection to the temporary Ring network, connection to home Wi-Fi, or power. Keep your phone near the device and follow the matching fix below. Ring’s setup flow uses the app to connect your phone to the device’s temporary network first, then sends the home Wi-Fi details to the device.
Before you retry Ring setup
Start with the basics so a preventable app, phone, or power issue does not look like a Wi-Fi failure.

- Update the Ring app and your phone’s operating system. Ring’s support article, Troubleshooting issues using the Ring app and Neighbors app, states that the apps require iOS 17 or later, or Android 9 or later. Requirements can change, so check the current listing for your phone.
- Have your home Wi-Fi password ready and turn off any VPN while setting up.
- Keep your phone close to the Ring device. Put only one Ring device into setup mode at a time.
- Charge battery-powered devices before setup. For wired or plug-in devices, confirm that the model is receiving power from its specified source.
- Identify the exact Ring model before using a reset button or following electrical instructions. Controls and power requirements differ by model.
Why can’t the Ring app scan the QR code?
First check whether the code is hidden by the way the device is assembled. Depending on the product, the QR code or PIN may be on the back, beneath a faceplate, or under a camera’s battery compartment. Use enough light and hold the phone steady so the camera can focus.
If scanning still fails, choose the manual or alternate setup option offered in the Ring app rather than restarting the entire process. Ring’s app troubleshooting guide and doorbell setup guide cover alternatives.

- Extend smart light coverage range — Keep your Ring smart lights connected to Amazon Sidewalk, even if they’re outside the range of your home wifi.
- Control in the Ring app — Use Ring Bridge to easily connect your Ring smart lights to the Ring app. When synced, Ring smart lights and accessories work better together by turning on when your cameras or doorbell detect motion and more.
- Connect with Alexa — Ring Bridge helps connect your Ring smart lights to select Alexa-enabled devices so you can turn on the lights, adjust brightness, and more with just your voice — or know when other Ring devices detect motion.
Why is the Ring app rejecting my location?
Check that the app has permission to access location, that you are signed into the account you intend to use, and that the address is entered correctly. If the suggested address is wrong, enter it manually or adjust the map pin. Ring’s doorbell setup instructions explain the location step.
Why can’t my phone connect to the Ring Wi-Fi network?
During setup, a powered Ring device in setup mode broadcasts a temporary network that the app uses before the device joins your home Wi-Fi. If the app does not connect automatically, open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, select the network named Ring or Ring Setup, then return to the app. Keep the phone near the device throughout.

If that network does not appear, confirm the device has power and is in setup mode. Try another phone or tablet if it remains unavailable. A power cycle or reset may help, but use only instructions for your specific model; Ring’s doorbell setup guide and UK camera setup guide provide product-specific setup details.
Why won’t my Ring connect to home Wi-Fi?
Once the phone has connected to the temporary Ring network, the device needs to join your home network. Work through these checks:

- DEAD ZONES, ELIMINATED: Bring WiFi 5 to the rooms your router cannot reach - bedrooms, garage, basement, and backyard - with up to 1,500 sq. ft. of added coverage for up to 25 devices, from any wall outlet
- EASY SET UP: Use the NETGEAR Nighthawk app for guided setup, or press WPS on your router and the extender
- STREAM AND BROWSE WITHOUT BUFFERING: Keep HD video, calls, and everyday devices smooth where signal was weak, with up to 1.2 Gbps (AC1200) across two bands. Real-world speeds vary depending on connected devices and internet plan
- WORKS WITH THE ROUTER YOU ALREADY HAVE: Connects to any router or gateway from Xfinity, Spectrum, AT&T, Cox, or Verizon and rebroadcasts its signal. It extends your router, it does not replace it
- SECURE AND READY TO GO: WPA2 security protects every device on your extended network, with automatic firmware updates to help keep it protected. Compatible with WPA2 or WPA/WEP routers. FCC Certified for use in the United States
- Confirm the password. Re-enter it carefully and make sure the phone itself can connect to that Wi-Fi network.
- Move the device closer to the router. A weak signal can interrupt setup even when the phone has a good connection.
- Try the 2.4 GHz network. All Ring devices support 2.4 GHz, while only some models support 5 GHz. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance says 2.4 GHz has broader device compatibility and greater range than 5 GHz.
- Check router security. Ring recommends WPA2 and says its devices are currently not compatible with WPA3. If the router is set to WPA3-only, ask the router manufacturer or internet provider how to configure a compatible option. Do not assume every model supports every band or network configuration.
- Consider a guest network only when appropriate. Ring suggests one for some connectivity failures; it is not a universal fix. Check the router’s guest-network settings and Ring’s current guidance before changing network configuration.
Ring’s setup troubleshooting page and doorbell setup guide cover Wi-Fi checks. Check compatibility and settings before considering a new router.
Why does my Ring keep going offline?
Open the Ring app and check the device’s offline indicator and Device Health. If the app offers Reconnect or Change Network, use that flow to reconnect the device or select the correct Wi-Fi network. Then check that the battery is charged or that the wired device has its specified power.

- Better extend wireless signals
- 2 high-gain antennas maximize your network quality
- Complies with FCC and IEEE802.11b/g/n standards
- Setup can also be completed within 3 minutes via your mobile device’s web browser
- Offers dedicated technical support for all your needs
If the device is far from the router, weak coverage may be the cause. Improve coverage only after diagnosing signal strength; an extender or mesh system is not a general setup fix. Ring names Chime Pro and eero as optional signal-improvement examples in its offline-device guidance and setup troubleshooting page. While a Ring device is offline, it cannot provide live video, alerts, or event recordings.

Match the next step to the failed setup stage
| What you see | First check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| App will not continue or runs poorly | App and phone OS support; VPN status | Update the app and phone, disable VPN, and retry near the device. |
| QR scan or address step fails | Code location, lighting, focus, location permission | Use the app’s manual option, enter the address, or adjust the map pin. |
| Temporary Ring network is missing | Device power and setup mode | Choose the Ring-named network in phone Wi-Fi settings; try another phone if needed. |
| Home Wi-Fi is missing or rejected | Password, distance, band, and router security | Try 2.4 GHz, check WPA2 compatibility, and verify the phone can join the network. |
| Device connected, then went offline | Device Health, power, and signal strength | Use Reconnect or Change Network, then address weak coverage if indicated. |
For button sequences, resets, or wiring, use the instructions for your exact Ring model and region; a procedure for one product may not apply to another.
