If your Ring doorbell keeps dropping offline, check its connection where it is installed—not just beside the router. In the Ring app, open Device Health to see the network status, any error message and the doorbell’s signal-strength reading (RSSI). Then check power, Wi-Fi credentials, signal and internet speed before restarting your modem and router. Weak coverage is common, but the right fix depends on the model and the app’s specific message.
Start with the Ring app’s error and network status
Open the Ring app and check the doorbell’s camera tile and Device Health. An offline indicator or error code can help distinguish a network problem from a device that is powered off or unresponsive. In Device Health, open Network, then select Reconnect or Change Network and follow the prompts. If setup fails, note any light or audio cues from the doorbell; the instructions differ by model. Ring’s offline-device guidance explains this app flow.

Use the phone you used to set up the doorbell if possible, and have the Wi-Fi password ready. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check capitalization as well as spelling. For setup-specific errors, use Ring’s setup troubleshooting guidance.
Check power before changing the network
Battery-powered doorbells
Confirm the doorbell is switched on and the battery is charged. A weak Wi-Fi connection can cause repeated disconnections and reconnections, which may drain the battery; a low charge alone therefore does not prove the battery caused the original connection problem. Ring describes this relationship in its battery-performance guidance.

Wired doorbells
Check that the doorbell is receiving power from the transformer or power supply specified for that particular model. Requirements vary, so do not assume that a power supply suitable for one Ring doorbell is suitable for another.
Measure Wi-Fi where the doorbell is mounted
In Device Health, find Signal Strength. Ring’s RSSI guide rates readings from 0 to -60 as great, -60 to -70 as okay, -70 to -80 as poor, and -80 or worse as very poor. Ring associates poor readings with possible delays or interruptions and very poor readings with intermittent service or the device falling offline. Use these bands as diagnostic guidance: RSSI is useful evidence, but it does not by itself explain every outage. See Ring’s Wi-Fi recommendations.

Compare internet speed on a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network in two places: near the router and beside the doorbell. A much weaker result at the door points toward a local coverage problem. Ring gives an illustrative example of 2 Mbps for one doorbell and 3.5 Mbps for one camera, or 5.5 Mbps combined for those two example devices. Those figures are an example, not a universal requirement for every model or household.
- Distance from the router can weaken the connection.
- Walls made of brick, stucco or metal can obstruct Wi-Fi.
- Large appliances such as fridges and ovens, other electronics and mirrors can also interfere with coverage.
Improve the connection before buying equipment
- Try a better position. If practical, move the router closer to the doorbell. Place it out in the open rather than inside a cupboard or behind furniture, and raise it off the floor.
- Check the Wi-Fi band for your model. Ring’s general offline guidance suggests trying 2.4 GHz, but supported bands vary by doorbell. Confirm compatibility for your exact model instead of treating one band as universal.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug both for 30 seconds, reconnect them, then check whether the doorbell stays online. Ring also suggests testing another network, such as a guest network, when appropriate.
- Check for multiple routers. Ring warns that multiple Wi-Fi routers in one home can cause connection problems. Ask your internet provider or router maker whether using one router or bridge mode is appropriate for your setup.
Change security settings only for a confirmed compatibility problem
Wi-Fi security support depends on the doorbell model. Ring documents an incompatible-encryption issue for a limited group of products; its setup guidance gives WPA3 as an example of an unsupported mode for affected devices and recommends WPA2-Personal for those cases. Do not weaken your router’s security settings just because a doorbell disconnects. First confirm the model and the exact error in the app, then follow the matching Ring setup instructions. If you are unsure how a router change affects your network, contact your internet provider or router maker.

- True color, even in low light — With Low-Light Sight, just a little ambient light gives you true color video. In total darkness, your camera switches to crisp black-and-white to keep details sharp.
Consider an extender or mesh only if coverage readings justify it
If RSSI or the speed comparison points to a weak signal at the door, an access point or extender positioned nearer that location may help. Ring names Chime Pro as an option for boosting a Ring device’s signal. If coverage is poor in several rooms rather than only at the door, a broader mesh setup may be more relevant; Ring also names eero mesh as an option for improving Wi-Fi coverage. Neither purchase guarantees a fix for a problem that has not been traced to coverage.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reset or escalate only after the basic checks
If the doorbell remains offline or unresponsive after checking power, credentials, signal, network compatibility and the modem/router restart, Ring recommends reset or power-cycle troubleshooting before setting it up again. Reset steps vary by model, so follow the instructions for your specific doorbell rather than trying a universal button sequence. Ring’s Video Doorbell setup guidance can help identify the relevant device instructions.
