Phones can get warm during graphics-intensive games because the processor and graphics hardware are working hard. Heat is more likely when you also charge the phone, use high brightness, play in a hot or enclosed space, or have other demanding activity running. Pause if the phone is very hot or displays a temperature warning; disconnect it from power if it is charging, move it to a cool, ventilated place, and wait for it to cool before playing again.
Why does a phone get hot while gaming?
The game is putting the phone under load
Rendering game graphics and processing gameplay take sustained work from a phone’s processor and graphics hardware. Apple, Google, and Samsung all identify demanding games or other high-power tasks as possible reasons a phone may feel warm. Warmth during a demanding session does not, by itself, mean the phone is faulty. Google Pixel Help, Apple Support, and Samsung Support describe these causes.

Charging adds another source of heat
Gaming while charging combines two activities that can generate heat. If a phone gets hot while plugged in, disconnect it and let it cool before charging again. Samsung also advises checking the charger and cable if they are damaged or incompatible.

Direct sunlight, a hot car or room, blankets, pockets, and other poorly ventilated spaces make it harder for heat to dissipate. High screen brightness, background apps, simultaneous downloads or streaming, hotspot use, and a weak mobile signal can add workload. Where practical, Google recommends lowering brightness and using Wi-Fi instead of mobile data.

What to do when your phone is hot right now
- Stop the game. If the phone is very hot or shows a temperature warning, pause use. If it is plugged in, disconnect it from power.
- Move it somewhere cooler and ventilated. Keep it out of sunlight and away from hot surroundings, blankets, pockets, or enclosed spaces. Let it cool before using it again, and follow any on-screen instructions for your model.
- Do not try rapid cooling. The cited manufacturer guidance is to move the phone to a cooler place and wait. It does not recommend putting a hot phone in a refrigerator or freezer.
Phones may respond to excess heat in different ways. Depending on the model, protective measures can include reduced performance or charging speed, temporarily limited features, low-power mode, or shutdown. These are examples, not symptoms every phone will show. Apple says an iPhone that feels warm under demanding use may cool after the activity ends; its guidance says an iPhone or iPad without a temperature warning can continue to be used. That advice is specific to Apple devices and should not be applied to other phones.
How to reduce heat during your next gaming session
- Avoid playing while charging if the phone repeatedly gets hot during games.
- Lower screen brightness. This reduces display workload and is a straightforward adjustment recommended in Google’s guidance.
- Reduce game settings where available. Try lower graphics quality or frame rate if the game offers those controls. Options and their effects vary by game and phone.
- Close unnecessary activity. Avoid running downloads, streaming, hotspot use, or other demanding tasks alongside the game; close background apps you do not need.
- Choose a cooler playing spot. Avoid direct sunlight and enclosed or poorly ventilated areas. Use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data when practical.
- Keep the phone’s software current. Samsung recommends current software and offers battery self-diagnostics through Samsung Members; menu names and availability vary by model and software.
When to check diagnostics or contact support
There is no single internal-temperature cutoff established for all phones during gaming. Ambient operating ranges published for specific products are not interchangeable with an internal warning threshold. Follow the warning and instructions for your exact model rather than relying on a temperature number from another device.

Pixel phones
Google documents a temperature diagnostics screen for Pixel 6a and later: Settings → Battery → Battery diagnostics → Phone is very warm. It can show Cold, Normal, Warm, or Elevated states and provide contextual advice. Availability may vary with model and software, so this is not a universal Android menu. Galaxy phones
If a Galaxy phone gets hot during charging, Samsung advises disconnecting the charger and waiting for the phone to cool. Its troubleshooting guidance also recommends pausing use when hot, lowering brightness, managing background activity, and checking for software updates. Exact menus vary by model and software.

iPhone
Follow any temperature alert and Apple’s on-screen instructions. Apple’s guidance distinguishes a device that merely feels warm under demanding use from one that displays a temperature warning; do not assume the same warning behavior or advice applies to Android phones.
Contact the manufacturer if overheating keeps happening during ordinary use, or if the phone repeatedly shuts down after you have removed the obvious heat sources. Google specifically recommends contacting Pixel support if shutdowns continue.

Are phone coolers worth considering?
A clip-on or magnetic gaming cooler is an optional accessory to consider only after trying the free steps above, particularly if you play for long sessions. Razer’s Phone Cooler Chroma support instructions say to remove the case or attached accessories for optimum cooling and magnetic connection. Check compatibility with your phone and case before buying.
