If Palworld keeps using default rates, difficulty, or other world options, the usual cause is not the setting itself but the file, format, restart, or hosting workflow. Stop the dedicated server, edit the active PalWorldSettings.ini in the correct platform folder, preserve its two-line structure, save it, and perform a full restart. Do not edit DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini: that file is only a template and changes there do not affect the running server.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Stop the dedicated server completely. Do not edit the configuration while the server process is still running.
- Open the active file. Windows servers use
Pal/Saved/Config/WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.ini. Linux servers usePal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini. - Leave the template alone.
DefaultPalWorldSettings.iniis supplied as a starting template. The official Palworld Server Guide explicitly warns that editing it will not affect server changes. - Keep the required layout. The first line must be
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]. The second line must contain the complete, single-lineOptionSettings=(...)string. - Check syntax. Verify every comma, quotation mark, parenthesis, setting name, and value type.
- Save and start the server. Palworld reads these settings at startup; saving a file or control-panel form does not live-reload a running process.
- Verify in the game. Test the changed behavior after the server has fully started. If the file is rewritten, use the provider’s supported settings panel or disable automatic generation before editing manually.
A malformed file can make the server use defaults rather than applying only the one bad entry. Treat the configuration as one complete expression, not as a collection of independent lines.
Which Palworld settings file should you edit?
There are two similarly named files, but only one is read as the live server configuration. The platform folder also matters.

Windows versus Linux paths
Use the folder that matches the server process, not the computer you happen to be using to edit it. A Linux server accessed through a web panel still needs the LinuxServer path. A Windows server needs WindowsServer. Editing a same-named file in the other platform directory will appear to do nothing because the server never reads it.
How to identify the active file on a managed host
Control panels may hide the directory tree or expose a generated configuration editor instead of a normal file manager. Look for a file explicitly named PalWorldSettings.ini under the server’s Saved/Config area. If the panel offers an “apply,” “save,” or “restart” action, use the documented sequence rather than assuming that closing the editor writes the live file. If you cannot see the active file, ask the host which path its panel writes and whether manual edits are supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

The formatting requirement is unusually strict. Palworld Wiki guidance states that PalWorldSettings.ini must be two lines long:
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]
OptionSettings=(...)
The second line above is schematic: your server’s complete OptionSettings=(...) contents belong there. Keep the opening and closing parentheses, commas between entries, and quotation marks where a value requires them. Do not split the option string across multiple lines for readability.

Common structural mistakes
- Deleting or changing the section header
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]. - Putting
OptionSettingson several lines instead of one complete line. - Removing the final closing parenthesis.
- Using a comma, quote, or parenthesis in the wrong place.
- Changing a key name or value type while trying to “clean up” the file.
- Appending a second
OptionSettingsline instead of editing the existing one. - Saving a partially edited string after a control panel has inserted its own formatting.
One syntax error can cause the server to fall back to defaults. The result can look like a setting-specific problem even though the parser rejected the configuration as a whole.
Step-by-step: edit the active configuration safely
1. Stop first and preserve a rollback copy
Use the server’s stop command or control-panel stop action and wait until the process is no longer running. Before editing, copy the current PalWorldSettings.ini to a separate backup location. A backup lets you restore a known working version if the server starts with defaults or refuses the file.

Navigate to the correct Saved/Config directory and open PalWorldSettings.ini, not the default template. If both Windows and Linux folders exist in a shared installation, select the one used by the executable that actually starts your server.
3. Make the smallest possible change
Edit only the required key and value inside the existing OptionSettings=(...) expression. Avoid retyping the entire line unless necessary. Keeping unrelated entries unchanged reduces the chance of dropping a comma, quote, or closing parenthesis.

4. Check the two-line layout before saving
Confirm that line one is exactly the section header and line two contains the complete option expression. Remove accidental blank lines, wrapped lines, explanatory comments, or pasted Markdown. A text editor may visually wrap the second line without inserting a newline; that is acceptable. An actual newline inside the expression is not.
5. Save without changing the filename
Keep the filename exactly PalWorldSettings.ini. Do not save a second copy with an extra extension such as .txt, and ensure the edit is made in the server’s writable directory rather than in a local download that the host never uses.

6. Start the server and wait for a complete startup
Start the dedicated server through the same method you normally use. There is no live reload for these settings; a full stop-and-start cycle is required. Restarting only a control-panel page, reconnecting as an administrator, or saving the file while the process remains online is not enough.
7. Test the changed behavior in-game
Join the affected world and perform a direct test of the setting. If the behavior is unchanged, stop again before making another edit. Recheck the path, file contents, and host rewrite behavior rather than stacking additional changes on an unverified configuration.

Why settings appear to be ignored
You edited DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini
This is the most frequent file-selection error. The official guide identifies the default file as a template and says edits to it do not affect changes on the server. Copy or adapt its contents into the active PalWorldSettings.ini under the appropriate WindowsServer or LinuxServer directory instead.
You used the wrong platform directory
A valid-looking file under WindowsServer will not control a Linux process, and the reverse is also true. Confirm the server’s operating system and the exact startup target before editing.
The option string is malformed
Palworld can fall back to defaults when the section header or OptionSettings=(...) expression is invalid. Check punctuation as a whole: balanced parentheses, correctly paired quotes, commas between entries, exact key names, and values in the expected type. Do not assume that one bad entry will simply be skipped.
You did not perform a full restart
These settings are read at startup. A panel’s save button may write a file, but it does not reload an already running server. Stop the process, confirm it has ended, then start it again.

The host regenerated the file
Managed hosts and control panels sometimes auto-generate configuration files. In that mode, a manual edit can disappear when you restart or when the panel reapplies its template. Disable automatic generation if the provider permits manual editing, or make the change through the provider’s own settings interface and use its explicit apply/restart workflow.
The setting is limited by existing world state
Some world settings are read only when a world is created. An otherwise valid edit and restart may therefore leave an existing save unchanged. Confirm the current behavior of the specific setting and your server version before deleting or resetting a world. Do not destroy an established save merely because one value did not change after a restart.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validation checklist before you restart
Run this checklist against the active file, not the template:
- The path ends in
WindowsServer/PalWorldSettings.iniorLinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini, matching the server platform. - The first line is
[/Script/Pal.PalGameWorldSettings]. - The complete
OptionSettings=(...)expression is on line two. - Every opening parenthesis has a closing parenthesis.
- Every quoted value has a matching quote.
- Entries are separated with commas, with no accidental trailing text.
- Setting names and value types have not been altered by autocorrect or a panel conversion.
- The file was saved under the exact
PalWorldSettings.ininame. - The server process was stopped before the edit and fully restarted afterward.
- No host automation rewrote the file between saving and startup.
A practical troubleshooting decision tree
The file changes back immediately
- Stop the server and open the file again.
- Compare its contents with the version you saved.
- If your change is gone, check for provider auto-generation or a panel template that runs during startup.
- Use the panel’s supported settings editor, or disable generation before editing the file manually.
- Restart and verify that the saved value remains after the process starts.
The file keeps the change, but the game uses defaults
- Confirm that you edited the active platform folder rather than
DefaultPalWorldSettings.ini. - Check the two-line structure and punctuation.
- Restore the backup if the line has become difficult to audit, then make one small change.
- Perform a complete stop-and-start cycle.
- Test in-game after startup, not while the server is still launching.
Most settings apply, but one world behavior does not
- Verify that the individual key is spelled exactly as supported by your server version.
- Check the value type and surrounding punctuation.
- Determine whether that setting is read only at world creation.
- Test with a disposable new world only if you have confirmed the setting’s world-creation behavior and have a backup of the established save.
The server will not start after editing
- Stop any restart loop so the host does not overwrite the file repeatedly.
- Restore the last known-good backup.
- Start the server to confirm the backup works.
- Reapply one change at a time while checking parentheses, quotes, commas, key names, and value types.
Choosing a hosting workflow that preserves settings
The important difference between hosting options is not a brand name; it is how reliably each workflow exposes and preserves the active configuration.
| Capability to check | Why it matters | Question to ask a provider |
|---|---|---|
Access to the active PalWorldSettings.ini |
Lets you confirm which file the server reads | Can I view and back up the file under the correct platform folder? |
| Manual editing or a reliable settings panel | Prevents changes from being trapped in an unsupported workflow | Does the panel write the live file, and can I edit it directly? |
| Persistence across restarts | Detects templates that silently regenerate defaults | Will custom values survive a stop, start, and scheduled restart? |
| Explicit apply/restart action | Ensures the running process actually rereads the file | Which button or command performs a full restart? |
| Documented server version and parameters | Helps distinguish a syntax problem from a version or world-state limitation | Which Palworld server version and setting names are supported? |
A host that cannot tell you which file is active, whether it rewrites that file, or how to perform a full restart makes configuration troubleshooting unnecessarily difficult.
Documentation and version context
The official Palworld configuration guide is identified as documentation version 1.0.4 in the available reference material. A separate WDC GameGrid reference lists its last verification as 2026-10-02. Because Palworld server behavior and supported parameters can change, use those references as orientation and confirm the setting’s behavior for the server version you are actually running.
Preventing the problem next time
- Keep a dated backup of the last working
PalWorldSettings.inibefore each edit. - Change one setting at a time so a failed restart has a clear cause.
- Record whether the server is Windows or Linux and keep that platform in the file path you document.
- After every change, verify the file still has exactly two logical lines and a complete option expression.
- Use the provider’s apply/restart control when a host manages configuration generation.
- Test in-game after startup and note whether the setting affects an existing world or only a newly created one.
The reliable pattern is simple: edit the live platform-specific file, preserve its exact structure, restart the process fully, and account for host automation and world-creation rules. When those four conditions are met, an apparent “ignored setting” usually becomes a traceable file, syntax, restart, or world-state issue.
