Why Your Modem and Router Keep Disconnecting: Key Causes and Fixes

Diagnose recurring modem and router disconnects by checking multiple devices, comparing Wi-Fi with Ethernet, inspecting cables, and knowing when to contact your ISP.

If your modem and router keep disconnecting, first find out whether the drop is on the provider connection, the router’s wired connection, Wi-Fi, or one device. Check more than one device and, if possible, test a wired connection before replacing equipment. That distinction tells you whether to contact your internet service provider (ISP), adjust the wireless setup, or troubleshoot a single device.

What “disconnecting” can mean

A modem connects your home to the ISP and presents that connection over Ethernet; a router connects to the modem and provides your home network. Some ISP gateways combine both functions. Google describes the modem’s role in its modem restart instructions.

  • Provider connection drops: The modem loses its connection to the ISP, so devices may remain connected to the home Wi-Fi but have no internet.
  • Modem-to-router link drops: A loose or damaged Ethernet cable, or a problem with a device or port, can interrupt the connection between the modem and router.
  • Wi-Fi drops: The router may still have internet, while wireless devices lose or struggle to maintain their connection.
  • One device disconnects: If other devices work normally, focus on that device or its connection rather than assuming the modem has failed.

These failures can look similar on a phone or laptop. A wired test and a check on another device help separate them.

How to tell whether the internet, router, or one device is at fault

  1. Note what happens when the connection drops. Record the time and duration, which devices are affected, whether modem or router lights change, and whether any Ethernet-connected device also loses internet. Light meanings differ by equipment; consult the device manual or ISP rather than assuming a color or blink pattern has a universal meaning.
  2. Check a second device. If only one device is affected, investigate its Wi-Fi connection or network settings. To avoid a phone silently switching to cellular data, disable cellular data or enable airplane mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on before testing.
  3. Check for a local outage. If multiple devices cannot reach the internet, ask the ISP whether there is an outage and whether it can see your modem online. Multiple devices failing does not by itself prove the modem is defective.
  4. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if available. If a wired device works while Wi-Fi devices drop, concentrate on wireless coverage, interference, or router configuration. If wired and wireless devices both lose internet, the problem may be upstream of Wi-Fi, but the ISP or equipment support team can help confirm where.

Restart the modem and router safely

A restart can clear some connection problems, but recurring drops need diagnosis rather than repeated restarts. Follow the instructions for your equipment or ISP where available. For a modem, Google documents this sequence in its restart procedure:

  1. Unplug the modem’s power and Ethernet cables.
  2. Wait 2–3 minutes, until the modem’s lights are off.
  3. Reconnect the cables and power.
  4. Wait for the internet light to become solid, then test the connection.

Restart the router according to its manual or ISP guidance. If the modem does not reconnect or the problem returns, contact the ISP instead of treating a restart as a lasting fix.

Check power and the modem-to-router Ethernet cable

Make sure power plugs and both ends of the Ethernet cable between the modem and router are firmly seated. Look for visible wear or damage, then reseat the connections. A loose, disconnected, or damaged cable can interrupt the link. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends Cat 5e or Cat 6 Ethernet cable for internet speeds above 100 Mbps.

If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi keeps dropping

When a wired connection stays online but wireless devices disconnect, the evidence points toward the Wi-Fi link rather than a complete internet outage. Distance, walls and other obstructions, nearby wireless interference, and competing household bandwidth can all affect Wi-Fi performance. Google lists these as factors in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
  • Test near the router. If the connection is more reliable nearby, distance or obstacles may be contributing.
  • Place the router in a more open location, away from obstructions where practical.
  • Consider whether several household devices are using the connection heavily at the same time.
  • If wired devices also fail, do not treat router placement as an explanation for the entire problem; check the upstream connection with your ISP.

Check for two routers broadcasting the same Wi-Fi name

If an ISP gateway and a separate primary router both broadcast the same Wi-Fi name, devices may switch between them and experience intermittent connections. Google recommends turning off the gateway’s Wi-Fi when a separate router is the primary one; its guidance on multiple routers also notes that unplugging an old standalone router may help.

Before changing gateway settings or disconnecting equipment, check the ISP or router manual: the correct setup depends on how the network is configured. Avoid disabling the only Wi-Fi access point in the home.

When to contact your ISP or consider equipment failure

Contact the ISP if the modem will not regain its connection after the restart, multiple devices repeatedly lose internet, or the drops persist after checking power and the Ethernet link. Ask whether there is an area outage and whether the provider can see the modem online. Share the drop times and durations, affected devices, observed light behavior, restart result, and whether a wired device also failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider replacing equipment only after the ISP and basic checks point to a device problem or a capability mismatch. Modem compatibility depends on the provider and service; before buying a modem, router, or combined gateway, confirm compatibility and supported service requirements with the ISP. A new cable or router placement change cannot resolve a provider outage.
