If your electric toothbrush will not charge, first check that you are using the charger made for its exact model. Then test the outlet, inspect the power cord and adapter, reposition the handle, and follow the model’s charging-time instructions. Charger types and charging signals vary, so there is no single fix or waiting time that applies to every brush.
1. Confirm the toothbrush and charger match
Find the model number on the handle, packaging, or product records, then check the manual or the manufacturer’s support page for its charging method. A brush may use a stand, glass, wireless pad, travel case, or another supplied setup. A charger that appears to fit is not necessarily compatible.

Philips says to use the original Sonicare charger and warns that not all Sonicare chargers are compatible. If the charger is missing or damaged, confirm the exact handle model and charger type before looking for a replacement; do not assume a generic or another Sonicare charger will work. - Unplug the charger and plug it into a different outlet you know works.
- Check the adapter, plug, and cord for visible damage. Do not continue using damaged electrical equipment. Philips’ charger troubleshooting guidance says, “If you notice any damage to your adapter or cord, stop using it immediately.”
- If the adapter or cord is damaged, seek a suitable replacement through the manufacturer rather than trying to repair it yourself.
Philips recommends trying another socket and checking the adapter and cord when a Sonicare brush will not charge. Philips’ charging troubleshooting steps explain what to check and when to seek a repair or exchange.

3. Reposition the handle and charger
Set the handle in the center of its stand, glass, or pad, following the instructions for that charging method. Depending on the model, a beep or indicator light may confirm that charging has started. If you see no expected signal, lift and reseat the handle, then check the manual for what its indicators mean.
Move the charger away from metal surfaces and other chargers. Philips identifies placement and nearby metal or chargers as possible factors; Oral-B also warns that metal can interfere with its electromagnetic charger. The advice is model-specific, so use the placement instructions for your own brush. Oral-B’s charging troubleshooting guidance describes its recommendations.

4. Allow the model-specific charging time
Once the brush is correctly positioned on a working, compatible charger, leave it connected for the period specified in its manual or official support page. Brand guidance illustrates why a universal promise is misleading:

These are brand- and setup-specific directions, not a universal benchmark. Philips says Sonicare users may leave a toothbrush on a plugged-in charger between brushing without affecting battery lifespan; that is Philips’ guidance for Sonicare products, not a claim about every brand or model.

5. Get manufacturer help if it still will not charge
If the correct charger is connected to a working outlet, the power supply is undamaged, the handle is properly placed, and the model’s recommended charging period has passed without a charging signal or usable battery, contact the manufacturer. Ask about repair, exchange, and warranty coverage for your specific model and region. Philips says persistent failure after its troubleshooting may indicate internal damage.
Warranty terms and battery-service policies vary. Philips’ U.S. Sonicare support page states a two-year warranty for Sonicare toothbrushes and flossers, but confirm that the term applies to your product, purchase, and region. Oral-B says it does not provide replacement batteries for its electric toothbrushes; check its current regional support information before considering any battery work. Do not open the handle or attempt an internal battery replacement unless the manufacturer explicitly supports that repair for your model.
