A DNS leak test showing your internet provider—or a resolver you do not recognize—does not automatically mean your VPN has failed. The key questions are who operates that DNS server and whether your requests reached it inside or outside the VPN tunnel. A VPN’s “connected” status alone does not answer either question.
What a DNS test is actually showing
When you visit a website, your device asks a DNS resolver to translate its domain name into an IP address. A leak test reports the public IP address it sees and the DNS resolvers that answered its test requests. Those results are clues about the route and resolver, not a definitive verdict about your whole VPN connection.

Two situations can produce an unexpected resolver:
- DNS bypasses the VPN: Your lookup goes to a resolver outside the tunnel, potentially exposing requests to your internet provider or another network operator. ExpressVPN explains that DNS traffic can escape even when other traffic is protected by the tunnel: DNS leak test and explanation.
- DNS travels through the VPN to another operator: The VPN may route lookups through a third-party resolver rather than one carrying the VPN’s name. That is not necessarily a route around the VPN, but the resolver’s operator may still receive the lookups. Proton VPN says partner infrastructure can operate DNS server IPs, so an unfamiliar name alone does not establish a leak: Proton VPN’s DNS-leak guidance.
In either case, the resolver operator may be able to see DNS requests. The distinction is whether those requests bypassed the tunnel or were sent through it to a different resolver.
How to tell whether the resolver is a concern
- With the VPN connected, run a standard or extended DNS leak test. Record the public IP address and every resolver listed; do not rely only on a summary such as “protected.”
- Check whether the public IP matches the VPN endpoint you expect. Then identify the organization that operates each listed DNS resolver.
- Compare resolver ownership with your actual internet provider and VPN provider. A resolver belonging to your real ISP is a stronger reason to investigate than one that is merely unfamiliar. A VPN provider may use infrastructure partners, so a different organization’s name is not proof by itself.
- If practical, connect to a VPN exit in another country and test again. The location change can make it easier to distinguish your usual ISP’s resolver from VPN-related or third-party infrastructure.
A test cannot determine your exact setup from the resolver name alone. If ownership or routing remains unclear, share the test result with your VPN provider rather than assuming the connection is safe or unsafe.

Check DNS settings that may override the VPN
Manually configured DNS on the device
Look for custom DNS entries on active network interfaces, including both IPv4 and IPv6. A manually selected resolver may take precedence over what the VPN app expects. Proton VPN’s setup guidance recommends automatic DNS for its own app on Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS; follow the equivalent instructions for your VPN rather than copying settings intended for a different provider.
Browser Secure DNS and encrypted DNS on the device
A browser’s Secure DNS, also called DNS over HTTPS (DoH), or an operating system’s encrypted DNS setting can send lookups to a resolver you selected. Android Private DNS is another device-level setting to check. Encryption protects requests between your device and the chosen resolver, but it does not make that resolver your VPN provider or guarantee that requests follow the VPN’s intended DNS policy. Proton VPN warns that third-party DoH or DNS over TLS (DoT) can complicate its app’s DNS rerouting.

Do not turn off encrypted DNS automatically. If you set it up deliberately, check your VPN provider’s guidance first and decide whether you want the browser or device to use that resolver while the VPN is active. Some antivirus and online-security products filter web traffic or DNS, which can interfere with a VPN’s DNS handling. ExpressVPN’s troubleshooting pages for Windows and Mac advise checking security software and reconnecting before testing again. On Windows, its guidance also covers automatic DNS, kill-switch settings, and split tunneling. These instructions are specific to ExpressVPN; use your own provider’s directions for its app.

Change one relevant setting at a time, reconnect the VPN, and run the same test after each change. This makes it easier to identify which setting affected the result. What to do if the ISP resolver still appears
- Confirm that the VPN is connected, then disconnect and reconnect it. Retest after the connection is established.
- Review the VPN app’s kill switch and DNS-related settings using the provider’s instructions. A kill switch can help prevent traffic from falling back to the normal connection during a VPN interruption, but its behavior and settings vary by provider.
- Check whether custom DNS, browser Secure DNS, Android Private DNS, security-software filtering, or split tunneling is active. Adjust only settings that apply to your setup, then retest.
- If the real ISP’s resolver continues to appear, contact the VPN provider. Include your operating system, VPN app and version, browser, resolver names, public IP shown by the test, and the test result. Ask the provider to explain whether those resolvers are expected for your connection.
Do not treat a setting change as a fix until your own test results change in the expected way. VPN menus and provider-specific recommendations can change as apps are updated.

What VPN leak research can—and cannot—tell you
A 2022 VPNalyzer study, “Systematic Investigation of the VPN Ecosystem,” found DNS-only leaks during tunnel failure among eight providers. The researchers described that count as a conservative lower bound because they counted definitive leaks. The result shows why tunnel interruptions and safeguards matter; it does not establish that a particular VPN or your current connection is leaking.
