A device can have several MAC addresses because each network interface—such as Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a virtual adapter—has its own address. Wi-Fi privacy features can also make the address your device presents to one network differ from its underlying hardware address. For a router rule or network enrollment, use the address for the interface and connection you are configuring, not a general device-info value by default.
Why one device can have multiple MAC addresses
A MAC address identifies a network interface on a local link; it is not a single universal identity for a person or device. A laptop with Wi-Fi and Ethernet has separate addresses, and a dock, USB network adapter, Bluetooth networking, virtual machine, hotspot, or peer-to-peer feature may add more interfaces. A Wi-Fi rule needs the Wi-Fi interface’s address, not the Ethernet adapter’s. The IETF explains address randomization and its network effects in RFC 9724.

Private or randomized Wi-Fi addresses
Modern devices can use a private or randomized address instead of exposing the Wi-Fi adapter’s underlying hardware address. This is a privacy feature: it makes it harder for networks and nearby observers to link activity across networks. The address used can be specific to a network and, depending on the platform, may change over time. The behavior depends on operating-system version, network, and setting; not every device changes its address on every reconnection.

Apple documents three modes on supported systems: Off uses the hardware address, Fixed uses a private address that remains fixed for that network, and Rotating periodically changes the private address. Defaults vary by OS release and network security characteristics. See Apple’s guide to private Wi-Fi addresses and its platform security documentation.

Google says devices running Android 10 and later have another MAC address, and Android’s implementation also supports randomized addresses for Wi-Fi client mode, SoftAP, and Wi-Fi Direct. Details vary by version and use case; see Google’s Android help and the Android Open Source Project documentation. Windows 10 and 11 provide random hardware address settings globally and for individual saved Wi-Fi networks, where supported by the Wi-Fi hardware (Microsoft’s instructions).
Which MAC address should you give your router?
For a Wi-Fi allowlist, reservation, parental control, or enrollment tied to a particular wireless network, use the current private or randomized address shown for that Wi-Fi network—unless the administrator specifically asks for the hardware address. A router sees the address presented on its network, which may not be the hardware address shown in general device information.

- AC1300 Dual Band Wi-Fi Adapter for PC, Desktop and Laptop. Archer T3U provides 2.4G/5G strong high speed connection throughout your house.
- Archer T3U also provides MU-MIMO, which delivers Beamforming connection for lag-free Wi-Fi experience.
- Usb 3.0 provides 10x faster speed than USB 2.0, along with mini and portable size that allows the user to carry the device everywhere.
- World's 1 provider of consumer Wi-Fi for 7 consecutive years - according to IDC Q2 2018 report

| Address type | What it represents | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Current private/randomized Wi-Fi address | The address the Wi-Fi interface presents to a particular network under its privacy setting | Usually the right choice for a router list, access rule, or enrollment for that Wi-Fi connection |
| Hardware Wi-Fi address | The Wi-Fi adapter’s underlying address, available in device information or when privacy addressing is off | Only when an administrator or device-management process explicitly requests the hardware, factory, or permanent address |
| Ethernet address | The address of the wired Ethernet interface | When the rule or enrollment is for a wired connection |
If the request only says “MAC address,” confirm whether it means Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether it wants the active private address or hardware address. An IP address is a different kind of network identifier and is not a substitute.

iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the information button for the target network.
- Check Private Wi-Fi Address and Wi-Fi Address. On supported versions, the private-address mode can be Off, Fixed, or Rotating.
- For a router or enrollment rule for that connection, use the address shown for that network unless the administrator explicitly asks for the hardware address. Apple notes that behavior depends on OS version.
Android phone
- To find the hardware Wi-Fi address, open Settings > About phone > Wi-Fi MAC address.
- To find the address for a particular network, turn Wi-Fi on and open Settings > Network & Internet > Internet.
- Select the connected network’s settings and look for Randomised MAC address.
- Use that network-specific value for a rule on that Wi-Fi network. If your menus differ, search Settings for “MAC address”; manufacturers use different labels. Google advises providing both addresses when configuring parental controls.
Windows 10 or 11
- Open Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi.
- Check the random hardware address control. Windows may show a control for all Wi-Fi networks and a separate one for an individual known network.
- For registration on a particular Wi-Fi network, inspect that network’s setting and identify the address Windows is using there.
- For a wired connection, find the Ethernet adapter’s address instead; the Wi-Fi address does not identify the Ethernet link.
Mac
- Open System Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Select Details beside the target network.
- Check Private Wi-Fi address and Wi-Fi address, then use the value for that network unless hardware addressing was specifically requested.
- For additional details, Apple also documents the Wi-Fi MAC address in Wi-Fi advanced settings. Ethernet has its own address.
Why your router may show the same device more than once
Two entries do not prove that two physical devices are connected. A single device can appear under different entries if it has multiple interfaces or if its randomized Wi-Fi address changes. ASUS documents duplicate client-list entries associated with random MAC behavior (ASUS router guidance).

Before changing a router rule, check the device’s current address for the target network and compare it with the entry’s interface or connection details. If the address changed, update the rule for the active address. If the administrator needs a permanent hardware address, confirm that requirement rather than assuming the router’s older entry is the right one.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you turn off private addressing?
Usually, no. Keeping private or randomized addressing on preserves a privacy benefit. First try registering the current address shown for the specific Wi-Fi network. Turn the feature off only when a genuine network requirement calls for the hardware address, and understand that this can make the device easier to recognize across connections. Windows and Apple provide controls, but the available options and defaults depend on system version and network.
