A line of small text can appear on a DEV post page and vanish from its feed card because the image shown there may be a transformed copy, not the file you uploaded. In examples reported by Frank Chu on October 1, 2026, DEV’s image proxy returned WebP and used different transforms for covers and inline images. The cover request cropped to a fixed shape; the inline request scaled the image down while preserving its proportions.
What the reported measurements show
Chu’s measurements describe specific image requests, not a published technical guarantee for every DEV surface or device. His cover example used a 1000 × 420 PNG. The proxy’s reported cover transform requested a 1000 × 420 output with fit=cover, gravity=auto, and format=auto. In the tested responses, the format was WebP.

Those parameters were embedded in generated image URLs; Chu says users do not select them. The distinction that matters is between a fixed-size cover crop and an inline image that is scaled down without a fixed height.
Why the cover can lose content at the edges
fit=cover fills the requested width and height. If the source and destination have different aspect ratios, some of the source must be cut off. In Chu’s example, asking for a 400 × 400 version of the wide 1000 × 420 image returned a square 400 × 400 result: the image was cropped to fill the box.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The request also included gravity=auto, which Chu describes as heuristic. He does not establish how the proxy chooses the focal area, so do not assume that it will reliably preserve text, logos, or other details near an edge.
How inline images differ
The reported inline transform requested 800 pixels of width, no fixed height, and used fit=scale-down, gravity=auto, and format=auto. In the square-box example, the same 1000 × 420 source produced a 400 × 168 output rather than a square crop. That result preserves the full image’s proportions.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Chu also reports that a request for a 4000-pixel width did not enlarge the 1000-pixel source in the examples he tested. This is an observation about those requests, not proof that every DEV image path always prevents upscaling.

What the file-size example does—and does not—tell you
For his single 1000 × 420 PNG example, Chu measured the original at 211,618 bytes and the same-dimension proxy WebP at 71,664 bytes, which he reported as 66% smaller. An 800-pixel-wide WebP output measured 46,168 bytes, reported as 78% smaller than the original. These are measurements of one image and its transformed outputs, not general compression rates or a guarantee for other uploads.

How to reduce the chance of a bad cover crop
Based on his measurements, Chu recommends preparing covers at 1000 × 420 and keeping important text or visual elements away from the edges. That matches the reported fixed cover ratio and gives an automatic crop less opportunity to cut into essential content. For inline diagrams and screenshots, his operational advice is to provide adequate width, since the reported inline request scales down without specifying a fixed height.
These are practical recommendations drawn from the examples, rather than an official DEV specification. DEV’s November 13, 2025 announcement about prompt-driven cover-image generation describes an editor feature, not the image proxy’s crop or encoding rules. In that post, Ben Halpern wrote, “We’re happy to roll out a new feature today: Prompt-driven image generation, built directly into the post editor.” The announcement said the feature was available on DEV and other hosted Forem subforems, and that self-hosted Forem instances could use it with their own key; it identified the model at that time as gemini-2.5-flash-image, also called “Nano Banana.” Read the DEV Team announcement.

How to check what image a page actually receives
A browser preview alone cannot tell you whether a mismatch comes from cropping, scaling, or encoding. Inspect the transformed response’s dimensions and file format. If you compare a cover and an inline image, examine each delivered image separately; their URLs can request different transforms.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open the image URL used by the relevant page or card, rather than relying only on the uploaded file’s dimensions.
- Fetch the response bytes and inspect the returned image format and dimensions. A PNG upload may be served as WebP in the examples Chu reports.
- Compare the response’s dimensions and aspect ratio with the original. A fixed square response from a wide source indicates a crop; a shorter output that retains the original ratio indicates proportional scaling.
For a code-based check, Chu’s article includes a simple fetch example and a Python snippet for reading WebP dimensions. The measurements and examples are attributed to Frank Chu’s October 1, 2026 article; the available findings do not establish that the same parameters apply across all DEV devices, feed surfaces, or future versions.
