If your cordless vacuum is running but picking up poorly, first check the bin, filter, airflow path and floor head—not the motor. Switch it off before inspecting it, and use the manual for your exact model: filters, brushrolls and cleaning steps vary. The checks below draw on guidance for the Dyson V15 Detect, Samsung vacuums and Shark upright vacuums, so model-specific instructions take priority.
Start with the symptom: weak suction, poor floor pickup or short runtime?
“Losing suction” can describe different problems. If the vacuum runs normally but debris is left behind, begin with the bin, filter and airflow checks. If suction seems normal at the handheld body but floor pickup is poor, inspect the cleaner head and brushroll. If it will not start, cuts out or runs for less time than expected, check charging and battery guidance as well. These clues help focus inspection; they do not identify a fault on their own.

- Weak pickup throughout: check the bin, filter fit and accessible airflow path.
- Poor pickup mainly at the floor: check the floor head and brushroll for hair or debris.
- Won’t start, stops unexpectedly or has short runtime: check the charge, power mode and model-specific battery guidance.
How to check and fix common causes
- Switch the vacuum off, then empty the bin. Check the dustbin or cup for accumulated debris. Dyson’s V15 Detect guidance says to empty the bin when debris reaches the MAX fill line; other models may use different markings.
- Check the filter’s condition and seating. A dirty filter—or one that is not installed correctly—can affect performance. Remove and clean it only if the manual for your model says it is washable, and follow that manual’s cleaning and drying instructions. Samsung identifies a dirty or incorrectly installed filter as a possible operating problem.
- Inspect the accessible airflow path. With the vacuum off, check the inlet, dustbin, tube or wand, tools and cleaner head for visible blockages. Dyson’s V15 troubleshooting includes tools, cyclone and filter among possible causes of poor performance; Samsung also names the hose, dustbin and brush roll.
- Check the floor head and brushroll. Hair and debris wrapped around a brushroll can interfere with floor pickup. Shark’s maintenance guidance recommends clearing hair and debris from its brushroll and softroller. Follow your model’s instructions before removing or cleaning any part.
- Reassemble and test according to the manual. Confirm the filter and other removed parts are correctly fitted before turning the vacuum on. If performance remains poor, consult the manufacturer’s model-specific troubleshooting guidance rather than opening the motor body.
How to clean a Dyson V15 Detect filter
These instructions apply specifically to the Dyson V15 Detect, not automatically to other Dyson models or cordless vacuums. Dyson says: “Wash your filter once per month to clean away any debris.” Its support page also notes that washing may be needed more often if you vacuum a lot of fine dust or use Boost mode predominantly.

- Remove the filter and tap off loose dust.
- Wash it under warm running tap water, gently rubbing it as Dyson directs.
- Leave it to dry in a well-ventilated place for a minimum of 24 hours.
- Reinstall it only when it is completely dry.
Do not run a washable filter while damp. For another model, check its manual before washing a filter or choosing a drying method.

When to replace a part or contact support
Cleaning and correct refitting are sensible first checks; a replacement is not a universal fix. If a filter is damaged or cleaning it as directed does not resolve the problem, verify the exact model and part compatibility before buying a replacement. A battery or brushroll may be relevant to a particular symptom, but the symptom alone is not enough to identify the part. For persistent poor performance, visible damage or uncertainty about disassembly, use the manufacturer’s support, warranty, repair or model-specific parts pathway. Samsung advises consulting the model manual for specific guidance; Dyson’s V15 support page links to service and spare parts.
