If your Contexto guesses aren’t getting closer, try changing the kind of clue you follow: the documented version of Contexto.us.com ranks words by meaning-based similarity, not by how their spelling looks. Use a relatively strong rank to explore related categories, uses, settings, and associations; if the rank gets much worse, switch to a different idea rather than making tiny spelling changes.

One important caveat: the detailed rules below are published by Contexto.us.com, an independent game that says it is not affiliated with contexto.me. The mechanics described here should not be assumed to apply to contexto.me.

What a Contexto rank tells you

On Contexto.us.com, rank is an ordering of semantic similarity: rank 1 is the answer, and a lower number means a closer match. It is not a clue about shared letters or spelling. The site’s FAQ describes its ranking against a 70,000-word vocabulary; that figure is specific to this independent site, not a verified detail of contexto.me.

That distinction changes what to do next. If a guess ranks relatively well, look for words connected by meaning or context. A word that looks almost like your guess may be a poor next try if it has little to do with the same ideas.

How to choose your next guess

Use rank movement to decide whether to keep exploring a line of thought or pivot. These are practical tactics inferred from the site’s description of its ranking—not a tested guarantee or official scoring rubric.

  1. Start with a promising guess. Treat a comparatively favorable rank as a direction, not as proof that you have found the answer’s exact category.
  2. Explore its semantic neighborhood. Try a broader category, other members of that category, what the thing does, where it is found or used, and common associations.
  3. Compare the new rank with the previous one. A lower rank suggests you have moved closer under this game’s ranking; a much higher rank suggests the new branch may be less useful.
  4. Change the concept, not just the spelling. If several guesses are cold, leave that branch and test a different category, function, setting, or association instead of making minor spelling variations.

Why a close word may not be a synonym

Contexto.us.com says its ranking method is based on patterns in how words are used in ordinary text. That can bring words together because they appear in similar contexts, even if they are not synonyms. Its Editorial Policy puts it this way: “Similarity is not the same as relatedness. Words that are opposites frequently rank close together, because they appear in the same sentences.” The policy was last updated 2 August 2026.

The same policy cautions that learned associations can be arbitrary, dated, or culturally narrow. So an unexpected rank does not necessarily mean you misunderstood the clue; it may reflect an association in the site’s model that is not intuitive to you.

When to use a hint

The FAQ for Contexto.us.com says its hint reveals a word closer to the answer than the player’s best guess. That can give you a new semantic direction without immediately showing the answer. Check the game you are actually playing before relying on this: contexto.me’s hint controls and mechanics were not verified, and the independent site’s feature should not be attributed to it.

Which Contexto rules are established?

The guidance above describes Contexto.us.com, which identifies itself as independent and unaffiliated with contexto.me. The contexto.me homepage available for review exposed only a JavaScript-required shell, so its current rank scale, accepted vocabulary, word-form handling, and hint controls could not be confirmed. Do not transfer the independent site’s stated vocabulary size, ranking details, or hint behavior to contexto.me without checking its own live interface or official documentation.
