What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A slow startup can come from apps launching at sign-in, background activity, storage or software issues, or aging hardware. On a Mac, login items or the selected startup disk may be involved. First note when the delay occurs—before sign-in, during sign-in, or after the desktop appears—then use the matching checks below. These are troubleshooting possibilities, not a diagnosis of a particular computer.
First, pinpoint when the delay happens
- Before the sign-in screen: Focus on Windows startup and system-level issues. On a Mac, check the startup disk if startup stalls or pauses.
- At sign-in or just after it: Apps that open automatically are a useful first check. On Windows, review startup apps; on a Mac, test login items.
- After the desktop appears: Updates, low storage, or unnecessary background activity may be affecting overall performance, rather than the time it takes to reach the desktop.
Vendor guidance describes common causes and procedures; it cannot identify the cause on your device without troubleshooting.

Windows: review apps that launch automatically
Microsoft Support says, “Apps that run at startup can slow boot time and increase background usage.” In Windows 10 or Windows 11, you can review startup apps in Settings or Task Manager.
- Open Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager and select Startup apps.
- In Task Manager, use the reported startup impact to help decide which recognized apps to review first.
- Turn off only apps you recognize and do not need to open as soon as you sign in. Leave security software, drivers, and unfamiliar items alone unless you know what they do.
- Restart and see whether the timing or behavior changes. If it does not, continue with the other checks rather than disabling more items indiscriminately.
Some startup items are configured elsewhere. Microsoft warns that registry changes can have unintended consequences, so registry editing is not a routine fix for a slow startup. See Microsoft’s Windows startup-app instructions.

Windows: check updates, storage, and background activity
Microsoft also recommends checking for software updates, freeing storage, and reducing unnecessary background activity. These checks can help overall performance, but they do not guarantee a faster boot.
- Check for updates: Install applicable Windows updates and restart as prompted.
- Review storage: If the system drive is nearly full, remove files or apps you no longer need using Windows’ built-in storage settings.
- Reduce unnecessary activity: Close or uninstall apps you do not use and review which apps are allowed to run in the background.
Microsoft’s performance guidance says its software steps may make little difference on older PCs whose hardware no longer meets modern performance needs. Its page states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check current Microsoft guidance for support and upgrade status, since those details can change. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.

Windows: use a clean boot to investigate a persistent conflict
If simpler checks do not resolve the issue, a Windows clean boot can help determine whether a non-Microsoft service or startup item is involved. It temporarily disables non-Microsoft services and startup items, so some functionality may be unavailable while you test. This is an advanced troubleshooting step, not the first thing to try.
- Follow Microsoft’s clean-boot procedure using System Configuration. Record the settings you change so you can restore them.
- Restart and test whether the startup problem remains. If it is resolved, re-enable items in a controlled way to help identify the conflict.
- When finished, use the article’s reset procedure to restore normal startup settings.
On a work-managed computer, network policy may prevent this procedure. Microsoft warns that changing advanced boot options can make a computer unusable; follow its System Configuration guidance and consult your organization’s support team rather than altering advanced options on your own.

Mac: test login items separately from startup-disk issues
If the delay happens at login
Apple’s guide for macOS 27 recommends removing login items, restarting, and adding them back one at a time if the problem disappears.
- Open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions and note the current items.
- Remove the login items, then restart the Mac.
- If startup is no longer slow, add the items back one at a time, restarting as needed, until the issue returns. The last item added is a useful lead for further troubleshooting.
See Apple’s login-item instructions.
If the Mac delays or stops before sign-in
This is a different problem from apps opening at login. Apple says the startup disk may need to be selected or repaired when a Mac stops or delays during startup. To choose a disk, open System Settings > General > Startup Disk and select the appropriate disk. For further steps, follow Apple’s startup-delay guidance.

When software changes do not help
If an older Windows PC remains slow after basic software checks, the hardware may limit what those steps can improve. Microsoft says upgrading may be the best long-term option, but its guidance does not identify a particular component for an individual computer. Before buying memory, a drive, or another part, identify the exact computer model and check its service documentation or ask a qualified repair source to confirm compatibility.
