A computer can detect that an Android phone is connected or charging without being able to show its files. Android’s normal USB transfer process requires you to unlock the phone and choose File transfer on the phone itself. If a broken screen prevents those steps, try cloud backups first, then see whether the phone can still be operated or supports a compatible external display. The available options depend on the handset and what still works.
What “not recognized” can mean
There are two different problems: the computer may not detect a USB connection at all, or it may detect the phone but show no files. A charge icon or other sign that the phone is connected does not mean its storage is available to browse.

For a normal Android USB transfer, Google’s instructions are to unlock the device, connect it to the computer, tap the “Charging this device via USB” notification, and select “File transfer” under “Use USB for.” If you cannot interact with the phone, you may not be able to complete that handoff. Google’s steps describe the standard transfer workflow; they do not diagnose every cable, port, driver, operating-system, or hardware issue that could also prevent detection. Check cloud backups before troubleshooting the phone
Sign in to the Google Account and other accounts you used on the phone, then check Google Photos, Google Drive, and any other service where you may have enabled syncing. Google documents account-based access to services such as Photos and Drive as alternatives to transferring files directly over USB. For a Pixel, Google also provides Pixel-specific file-transfer guidance. That page does not establish a special way to bypass a broken screen; the phone still has to be usable for the steps that require interaction.
Try USB transfer only if you can operate the phone
- Connect the phone to the computer with a USB cable.
- Unlock the phone.
- On the phone, tap the “Charging this device via USB” notification.
- Under “Use USB for,” select “File transfer.”
- Check the computer for the phone and its files.
These are Google’s documented Android steps. If touch is broken but the display still works, a compatible mouse connected to the phone may help on some setups; Android’s cited transfer instructions do not establish that this works across devices. Confirm the phone’s model and input compatibility before relying on it. If the display is black, guessing at taps is unreliable and can trigger unintended actions.

Check whether the exact phone supports an external display
Samsung documents an external-display workflow for a subset of Galaxy phones: the phone must run Android 12 or later and support DisplayPort. Samsung’s Australia-specific instructions use a USB-C-to-HDMI hub or adapter, an external display, and a mouse and keyboard. Once the phone is mirrored and unlocked, Samsung says to launch Smart Switch to transfer data. Do not assume that USB-C alone means a phone can output video. Samsung warns that models, settings, and procedures can vary by region or purchase market, so verify the precise model, market, Android version, and DisplayPort support before buying accessories. Why ADB usually is not a new workaround
Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is not a universal way around a screen that cannot be used. Android Developers says that Android 4.2.2/API 17 and later requires the user to unlock the device and accept an RSA authorization prompt before a computer can run ADB commands. That security gate means ADB is relevant only if USB debugging was already set up and the specific computer was authorized, or if you can now unlock the phone and approve the prompt. If the files are not backed up and you cannot unlock or operate the phone through a supported input or external-display method, ask the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider about model-specific screen repair. A reputable data-recovery provider may be another option if the phone cannot be made usable through ordinary means. Neither repair nor recovery guarantees access: the outcome depends on the device’s condition and whether it can be operated. Avoid factory resets, bootloader unlocking, or flashing firmware as file-recovery steps, since they can put the data at risk.
