A leaking coffee machine is not one problem with one cure. The right first step is to identify where the liquid appears and when it appears. Water in an automatic espresso machine’s drip tray can be normal rinse runoff; water escaping around a portafilter usually points to coffee residue, an unlocked handle, or a seal; water pooling under the appliance after the tank is correctly seated needs service.
This guide covers automatic and manual espresso machines plus drip coffee makers. The checks are deliberately model-dependent: use only the parts and cleaning procedures your machine’s manual permits, and stop using the appliance if water is reaching electrical controls or the leak persists beneath the case.

Identify the leak before trying to fix it
Dry the counter and the outside of the machine, then run the shortest relevant operation while watching the first place moisture appears. Record whether the liquid is clear, tinted with coffee, or mixed with grounds. A leak that appears during filling has a different starting point from one that appears only while brewing or rinsing.

| Where you see liquid | When it appears | Most useful first check |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the drip tray | After rinsing, brewing, or while the machine is idle | Check whether the model intentionally routes rinse water to the tray; then compare the amount with the manufacturer’s guidance. |
| At the tank, side, or rear | While filling, immediately after filling, or during brewing | Remove and fully reseat the tank; inspect the tank and inlet for visible damage or scale where the manual allows. |
| Around the portafilter or brew head | Only during espresso extraction | Clean the basket rim, lock the portafilter firmly, and inspect the brew-head seal. |
| Around a drip coffee maker’s brew basket | As water enters the basket or carafe | Check for spilled water, overfilling, and grounds blocking the basket’s drip-stop. |
| Under the machine | During operation or while idle | After external checks, treat continued leakage as a service issue rather than guessing at an internal part. |
The table is a triage aid, not a diagnosis. Manufacturers use different reservoirs, valves, seals, and drainage paths, so a symptom can have more than one cause on different models.

Make the initial check safely
- Stop the brew, rinse, or steam cycle and let hot surfaces cool according to the machine’s instructions.
- Disconnect power if the manual permits and if water is near controls, the plug, or the power cord. Do not operate a visibly wet electrical appliance.
- Empty and dry the drip tray, wipe the tank and counter, and place a dry towel beneath the suspected area. This shows whether new water comes from the machine or from a spill.
- Do not remove the casing or probe internal tubing. The manufacturer sources below do not establish an internal component from the title alone, and opening the case can create additional risk or affect warranty coverage.
- Keep the machine’s exact model number available. Tank fittings, gaskets, cleaning cycles, and service instructions are not universal.
Water in an automatic espresso machine’s drip tray
Some automatic espresso machines deliberately discharge water into the drip tray during automatic rinsing or brewing. Philips states that this can happen during normal operation and says, “However, this does not indicate the machine is leaking.” The statement applies to the covered Philips/Saeco machines and their internal rinsing process, not to every coffee machine. Philips’ support guidance says to contact support if the tray is full after two cups or fills overnight; that is a Philips-specific threshold, not a universal test.
How to tell normal runoff from excessive filling
- Empty the tray and note its level before making a drink.
- Run the normal rinse or brew cycle specified by the manual, without moving the machine.
- Look for water entering the tray through its intended drain path rather than appearing outside the tray or under the chassis.
- If the tray rapidly fills, fills while the machine is idle overnight, or water escapes onto the counter, stop treating it as ordinary rinse water and contact the manufacturer.
Do not block the tray drain or tape over openings to keep the counter dry. The tray is part of the machine’s designed water-management system; restricting it can redirect water elsewhere.
Clear water around the tank, side, rear, or underside
Reseat the reservoir
A removable tank that is not fully engaged can leak around its outlet or beneath the machine. Remove it, empty it if necessary, and reinstall it by following the machine’s insertion path until it is fully seated. Philips recommends pushing the tank completely back into the appliance, while De’Longhi likewise lists correct tank fitting as a primary check. Philips’ troubleshooting page and De’Longhi’s Linea Classic FAQ describe this check for their respective models.

Inspect the tank and connection
With the tank removed, look for a crack, warped edge, damaged valve, or debris at the outlet. KitchenAid includes tank seating and visible tank damage among the checks for its fully automatic machines. Do not sand, glue, or modify a tank valve; use the model manual or manufacturer support to determine whether a replacement tank is approved. KitchenAid’s instructions are specific to its appliance design.

Check the inlet and model-specific details
For the De’Longhi Linea Classic, the support FAQ also tells owners to confirm that the red plastic cap was removed from the machine’s tank connection, clean limescale from the water inlet, and descale according to the appliance instructions. Those are Linea Classic instructions, not a universal leak remedy. Follow the Linea Classic FAQ only when it matches your model; otherwise use your own manual’s cleaning procedure.
When the tank is not the explanation
If the tank is correctly seated, undamaged, and dry on the outside but fresh water still appears under the machine, do not infer a failed pump, hose, or valve from the symptom alone. Philips and KitchenAid direct owners toward support when leakage continues beneath the appliance after the basic tank checks. Philips support and KitchenAid support are the appropriate next steps for their products.
Espresso escaping around the portafilter or brew head
When water and coffee spray or run around the handle during extraction, the seal may not be closing against a clean, correctly locked basket. Frigidaire advises cleaning the edge of the filter cup and checking the filter assembly; Philips’ Barista Brew guidance likewise points owners to correct assembly and cleaning. Frigidaire’s support article and Philips Barista Brew support cover these model-specific checks.

- Remove the portafilter and the coffee puck after the machine has finished and cooled as directed.
- Rinse the filter basket and wipe coffee particles from its upper rim. Even a thin layer can hold the basket away from the brew-head seal.
- Wipe the accessible brew-head sealing area with the method approved in the manual. Do not push tools into valves or pierce the seal.
- Check that the basket is fully clipped into the portafilter and is the correct basket for that handle.
Lock the portafilter correctly
Insert the handle squarely and turn it to the machine’s marked brewing position. It should stop at the position described by the manual without forcing it. A handle that is only partly locked can let pressurized water escape at the circumference; a handle that requires unusual force can indicate a misassembled or obstructed basket.

Consider the gasket only after confirming the source
A Groupe SEB espresso manual lists a dirty percolation-head seal as one possible reason for leakage along the sides of the filter holder. If cleaning and correct locking do not stop a leak that clearly originates at that seal, a replacement portafilter or brew-head gasket may be appropriate—but only when the part is verified for the exact make and model. The Groupe SEB manual illustrates why a seal is a model-specific component; a generic gasket should not be assumed to fit.
Drip coffee maker leaking around the brew basket or base
Drip machines have a different set of failure points. KitchenAid’s coffee-maker guidance first asks owners to check whether water was poured down the back during filling and merely travelled to the base. Wipe the rear panel and countertop completely, then refill slowly while watching the reservoir rather than assuming the base is the source. KitchenAid’s coffee-maker instructions apply to machines with the relevant design.
Respect the marked fill limit
Use no more water than the reservoir’s maximum line. Overfilling can produce an apparent leak at the basket or base because water has nowhere to remain in the intended brew path. Measure against the machine’s markings rather than a cup estimate.
Clean the drip-stop sealing surface
Many brew baskets use a drip-stop that opens over the carafe. Grounds or grit on its sealing surface can prevent it from closing, allowing water to escape around the basket. Remove the basket, clean the contact area as the manual directs, and confirm that the stop moves freely without forcing it. If the design has no drip-stop, skip this check.

A step-by-step troubleshooting sequence
- Classify the machine. Decide whether it is a manual espresso machine, an automatic espresso machine, or a drip coffee maker. Do not apply portafilter checks to a drip machine or drip-stop checks to an espresso machine.
- Classify the liquid. Clear water usually points toward a reservoir, rinse path, or spill; coffee-colored liquid suggests that it travelled through the brew path. This observation narrows the inspection but does not prove an internal failure.
- Map the timing. Watch one filling operation, one rinse, and one brew when the machine’s instructions allow. Note the first wet location, not the point where water finally runs off the counter.
- Eliminate external spills. Dry the tank, rear panel, basket, carafe area, and counter. Refill to the marked limit and look for water tracking from above.
- Perform the design-specific check. For an automatic espresso machine, reseat and inspect the tank; for a portafilter machine, clean the basket rim and lock the handle; for a drip machine, check fill level and the basket’s sealing surface.
- Use descaling only when instructed. If the exact manual or manufacturer support page calls for descaling the inlet or water circuit, use the specified procedure. Do not assume a general-purpose descaler repairs every leak.
- Run a controlled retest. Empty the tray, place a dry towel under the machine, and repeat the operation that originally produced the leak. Stop if water moves beneath the chassis or toward electrical parts.
- Escalate with evidence. If the same leak returns after the applicable external checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service facility with the model, timing, liquid appearance, and photographs of the leak path.
What recurring patterns can tell you
Leak only during automatic rinsing
First compare the water with the intended drip-tray path. Automatic rinse discharge can be normal on covered models; a tray that overfills or spills outside its designed container needs support rather than a guessed repair.
Leak immediately after filling
Recheck the tank seating, tank outlet, and any model-specific connection instructions. A wet rear panel or a crack in the reservoir can make water appear to originate underneath.
Leak only during espresso extraction
Concentrate on the portafilter rim, basket fit, locking position, and accessible brew-head seal. Coffee residue at the rim is a simple cause; a persistent seal leak requires a model-compatible part or service assessment.
Leak while the machine is idle or overnight
Empty the tray before leaving the appliance and observe whether water returns without a brew. Philips specifically treats an overnight-filling tray as a reason to contact support for the covered machines; do not generalize that threshold to another brand.

Water appears under the base regardless of the cycle
Once spills and tank seating have been ruled out, stop operating the appliance and arrange manufacturer or authorized service. The reviewed manufacturer guidance does not identify a particular internal component from this symptom alone.
When a repair is the right next step
Contact support or an authorized service facility when water continues to come from beneath the machine after the reservoir and external spill checks, when a tank or connection is visibly damaged, when a portafilter leak persists after cleaning and correct locking, or when the machine becomes wet near electrical controls. Frigidaire, Philips, and KitchenAid all direct owners toward service for persistent leakage in the situations covered by their support pages: Frigidaire, Philips, and KitchenAid.
Have these details ready: exact model and serial information, whether the liquid is clear or coffee-colored, the location of the first drop, whether the machine was filling, rinsing, brewing, or idle, how quickly the tray or counter accumulated water, and which external checks you completed. This prevents support from assuming that a normal drip-tray discharge is an under-body leak.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPreventing a repeat leak
- Seat a removable tank fully each time and avoid carrying the machine by a filled reservoir.
- Keep the reservoir within its marked range; never exceed the maximum line on a drip coffee maker.
- Clean coffee from the portafilter basket rim and brew-head area using the machine’s approved method.
- For drip machines, remove grounds or grit from the brew basket’s drip-stop sealing surface when that feature exists.
- Empty and clean the drip tray regularly so normal rinse water cannot overflow onto the counter.
- Descale only at the interval and with the procedure specified for the exact model. De’Longhi’s Linea Classic instruction to clean inlet scale and descale is a product-specific example, not evidence that descaling fixes every leak.
- Keep the manual and a record of the model number; replacement gaskets, tanks, and other parts must match the appliance.
Bottom line
Start with location and timing, not with a replacement part. Water in a designed drip tray may be normal; a loose or damaged tank, contaminated portafilter rim, poorly locked handle, overfilled reservoir, or blocked drip-stop can often be corrected externally. If water still emerges from beneath the machine after those checks, the reliable fix is manufacturer or authorized service—not opening the case or guessing which internal component failed.
