Your chair should support your lower back while giving your thighs room to rest without pressure behind your knees. Seat depth and lumbar support work together: a pan that is too deep can stop you sitting back against the lumbar support, while one that is too short may not support enough of your thighs. The right fit depends on your body, workstation and tasks—not a single measurement or product label.
How lumbar support and seat depth work together
Lumbar support is the part of the backrest that meets your lower back. It should be positioned to fit that area without creating a painful pressure point. The seat pan has a different job: support your thighs while leaving clearance behind your knees.

The two features need to work at the same time. If the seat is too deep, its front edge may press behind your knees before you can sit back against the backrest. You may then lean forward or lose contact with the lumbar support. If the seat is too short, your thighs may not receive enough support.

The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) puts the broader principle this way: “A chair becomes ergonomic only when it specifically suits a worker’s size (body dimensions), their particular workstation, and the tasks that must be performed there.”

Check whether your chair fits
- Sit back in the chair. Let the backrest meet your lower back. The support should feel positioned for that area, not like a painful pressure point.
- Check the front edge. With your back against the backrest, notice whether the seat edge presses behind your knees. If it does, see whether the seat depth can be shortened or adjusted.
- Check thigh support. The seat should support your thighs; moving it forward to relieve pressure should not leave too much of them unsupported.
- Recheck the whole workstation. Adjust the chair alongside the desk, keyboard and monitor. If chair height needs to be raised to suit the work surface but your feet no longer rest flat, a footrest may help.
These checks are about how the chair fits you during your work, not whether it meets a universal measurement. CCOHS says adjustable chairs typically accommodate around 90 percent of the population; its guidance, last revised on 2014-03-10 and confirmed current on 2025-02-04, notes that people near the shortest and tallest 5 percent may need custom-made chairs. That is a population-level statement, not a guarantee that any particular chair will fit you.
What to look for when choosing a chair
- Positionable lumbar support: OSHA describes height-adjustable support that can be positioned to fit the lower back.
- Adjustable seat depth: Look for a seat that can support your thighs while leaving clearance behind your knees and allowing you to sit back against the support.
- Fit with your setup: Consider your body dimensions, desk and tasks together rather than judging the chair by one feature.
- A chance to try it: OSHA recommends trying different chairs for comfort and fit before purchase.
An adjustable ergonomic office chair with adjustable lumbar support and seat depth can offer more ways to tune the fit, but adjustability alone does not prove that a chair suits you. Official guidance emphasizes individual fit; it does not establish one ideal lumbar-support depth or chair size for everyone.

Can a cushion or footrest solve a fit problem?
OSHA describes a removable back-support cushion as a temporary option when a chair lacks lumbar support. It may add support, but it does not change a seat pan that is too deep or too short. If the seat edge presses behind your knees when you sit back, a cushion is not a fix for that depth mismatch.
