Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A camera preview that is completely black is most often caused by a closed privacy shutter, denied camera access, another app using the camera, or a software problem. Check the lens and shutter first, then compare the device’s built-in Camera app with the app showing the black image. If the camera’s own LCD is dark, follow the separate display checks below; that symptom is not the same as a black webcam feed.
Start with the physical camera
Look for a sliding privacy shutter, privacy switch, keyboard camera key, or lens cap, and make sure it is open or removed. Take off any case, film, or accessory that could cover the lens. If your phone has front and rear cameras, test each one separately. Apple, Google Meet, and Microsoft all recommend checking for physical obstructions or privacy controls when a camera image is black.

For an external webcam, check that its lens cover is off and that its connection is secure. If it is a USB camera, disconnect and reconnect it before testing again.
Find out whether the problem is the app or the camera
Open the device’s built-in Camera app or the manufacturer’s camera utility. If it shows a picture while the original app remains black, the camera is producing an image in that test; focus next on the affected app’s camera choice, permissions, or settings. If the built-in app is also black, continue with system and device checks.

- Crisp HD 720p/30 fps video calls with diagonal 55° field of view and auto light correction. Compatible with popular platforms including Skype and Zoom.
- The built-in noise-reducing mic makes sure your voice comes across clearly up to 1.5 meters away, even if you’re in busy surroundings.

Google Meet and Microsoft recommend testing the camera in another app to help narrow down the cause. A successful test does not prove every camera function is working, but it is a useful way to distinguish an app-specific problem from a broader one.
Check camera permissions and app conflicts
- Make sure camera access is enabled in the operating system and allowed for the app or browser you are using.
- Close other video-call, recording, or camera apps completely, then reopen the app that showed the black screen. Another app may be using the camera.
- In a meeting or video app, confirm that the intended camera is selected rather than a disconnected or unused device.
For a black feed in Google Meet, its camera troubleshooting guidance covers permissions, camera selection, privacy shutters, and testing in another app. For an Elgato Facecam specifically, Elgato’s black-feed support page also recommends checking the lens cover, reconnecting the USB camera, and reviewing exposure settings.

Restart the device and use the right platform steps
Restarting can clear a temporary software problem. After that, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device and operating-system version; menus and steps vary.
- iPhone or iPad: Apple recommends restarting the device and checking for an iOS update. See Apple’s camera and flash troubleshooting steps.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11: Microsoft includes camera-driver updates among its steps for a black screen or missing video. Follow Microsoft’s Windows camera troubleshooting guide for the applicable version.
- Google Pixel phone or tablet: Google’s guidance includes restarting and clearing the Camera app cache. See the Pixel Camera app troubleshooting steps.
If the camera’s own LCD is dark
A blank or dark LCD on a standalone camera may be a display-routing or control issue rather than a failed image sensor. For the Cyber-shot and Mavica context covered in Sony’s support article, check that the camera is on, remove the lens cover, disconnect any A/V cable, and use the FINDER/LCD or DISPLAY control to change the display. Make sure the eyepiece sensor is not blocked. Sony’s article, modified March 1, 2022, also recommends resetting the camera if the LCD remains blank and seeking repair if a reset does not help. Confirm the procedure for your exact model before using it; controls differ between cameras.

Use the pattern to decide what to try next
| What you observe | What it may point to | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| The built-in Camera app works, but one app shows black | That app’s camera selection, permission, or configuration | Check which camera the app selected and whether the app or browser has permission. |
| The built-in app and several other camera apps all show black | An obstruction, system setting, driver or software issue, or possible hardware fault | Check the shutter and lens, review permissions, restart or update using the device maker’s instructions. |
| An external webcam feed is black | A lens cover, connection issue, another app using the camera, or device-specific settings | Close other camera apps, check the cover and connection, and consult the webcam maker’s guidance. |
| A standalone camera’s own LCD is blank or dark | A display mode, cable, or sensor issue may be involved | Check the display control, cable, and eyepiece sensor using instructions for the exact model. |
When to seek service
If the built-in camera and multiple other camera apps still fail after you have checked for obstructions, permissions, and software issues, a device fault becomes more plausible. Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider for model-specific diagnosis. Google advises Pixel users to seek repair when other apps also crash while accessing the camera; Apple and Sony likewise direct persistent problems toward service or repair in their respective device contexts. A black preview alone is not enough to identify which component has failed.
