First identify which connection is failing: the radio link between the drone and controller, or the wired link between the controller and your phone. If the controller cannot operate the aircraft, check model compatibility, linking mode, distance and firmware. If the controller flies the drone but the app says the remote controller is not connected, troubleshoot the phone, cable, port and app instead. Keep the aircraft grounded until the manufacturer’s status indicators show the setup is ready.
Which connection has failed?
“Controller not connected” can describe two different problems. A failed aircraft-to-controller link means the controller cannot operate the drone. A failed phone-to-controller link means the controller may still operate the aircraft, but the phone or flight app cannot communicate with the controller. DJI documents these as separate failures with different remedies: DJI Support explains aircraft linking, while its phone-connection guidance covers the mobile device and cable. A USB cable may fix the latter; it cannot repair a failed radio pairing between aircraft and controller.
Before troubleshooting, note the exact aircraft model, controller model and app. Brand alone does not establish compatibility, and procedures vary by model and firmware. Use the current manufacturer instructions for that exact combination.
If the drone and controller will not pair
Confirm the controller is compatible
Check the manufacturer’s supported-model list before trying to pair repeatedly. DJI’s support article distinguishes its RC-N1, RC-N2 and RC-N3 controllers and lists different aircraft for each. For example, the current list says RC-N1 supports Mavic Air 2, Mini 2, Mini 2 SE, Air 2S, Mavic 3 series, Mini 3 Pro and Mini 4K; RC-N2 and RC-N3 have different supported sets. Consult DJI’s current compatibility guidance for the complete list and verify your exact model.

Pair at close range and enter linking mode
Place the controller close to the aircraft while linking. DJI recommends no more than 50 cm for the RC-N products covered by its guidance. Follow the exact model-specific sequence: some procedures use the app, while others require holding the aircraft’s power button until it signals linking mode. DJI describes aircraft status LEDs blinking and the controller beeping when the devices are in linking mode. If either device does not show the expected state, pairing may not actually have begun.
Use the manufacturer’s steps rather than assuming a generic button combination works across models. DJI’s Aircraft Linking Failure guidance advises keeping the controller near the aircraft during the process; its model instructions provide the applicable entry steps.

Check firmware consistency
Inconsistent aircraft and controller firmware can prevent linking. Check the current release notes for both components and follow the manufacturer’s update procedure for the exact model. Do not interrupt an update. DJI’s cited procedure says to keep the mobile device online and not power it off or exit DJI Fly during the update.
For Autel EVO II specifically, Autel documents OTA and microSD firmware update methods and instructions for comparing component versions with release information. Those EVO II procedures do not automatically apply to every EVO aircraft. Start with the applicable Autel model guidance and use its firmware information for the aircraft in question.

If linking mode works but pairing does not
Try the alternate manufacturer-supported linking method, then recheck firmware consistency and compatibility. If the aircraft or controller cannot enter linking mode, DJI’s troubleshooting guidance suggests re-flashing firmware; if the problem persists, it recommends sending the equipment for testing. Do not keep trying to fly while the link is unreliable.
If the controller works but the app cannot see it
When the controller operates the aircraft but the app reports that the remote controller is disconnected from the mobile device, focus on the wired phone connection rather than aircraft pairing.

- Confirm you installed the correct manufacturer app and that the phone is supported for the controller and app version.
- Check that the cable is plugged into the correct controller port and fully seated. Remove a phone case if it prevents the connector from inserting completely.
- Try another compatible cable that supports data, not only charging. Confirm the phone connector, controller port and cable type all match your setup.
- On Android, check the USB mode or prompt. DJI says “Charge only” works for most devices and “Transfer files” for some; it also mentions USB debugging where the phone offers no prompt. Follow current instructions for your specific phone and controller before changing USB settings.
Autel recommends connecting an iPhone to an EVO controller with a phone cable or compatible cable. Cable requirements depend on the actual phone and controller. A compatible data cable can help only when the phone-controller connection is the problem; it will not pair the aircraft to its controller.

Contact DJI, Autel or the relevant manufacturer if the model is confirmed compatible, you have followed the correct linking or phone-connection procedure, firmware is aligned, and the problem remains. Escalate sooner if a port appears damaged, a device will not power on or enter linking mode, or the manufacturer’s instructions call for service. DJI recommends testing or service for specified persistent linking failures; Autel directs EVO users to support when its pairing and manual-update guidance do not resolve the issue.

For further model-specific steps, use the official DJI support guidance or Autel EVO FAQ. The latter includes pairing guidance; its EVO II firmware instructions are limited to EVO II rather than all EVO models.
Manufacturer troubleshooting pages do not establish how often these failures occur or rank their causes by likelihood. The steps above are diagnostic checks, not a claim that one cause is more common than another.
