If your bean-to-cup coffee tastes weak or watery, try a stronger drink setting and, if your manual allows, a slightly finer grind. If it tastes overly strong or bitter, try a slightly coarser grind instead. Change one thing at a time; grinder controls and adjustment procedures vary by machine, so check the manual before changing grind settings or opening any part of the machine.
First, identify the taste problem
Weak or watery coffee and overly strong or bitter coffee point in different directions. Note whether the taste changed after you installed the machine, switched beans, or adjusted a setting. On some models, the first cups can be watery while the machine adapts; Philips/Saeco advises brewing more cups for supported machines rather than treating that behavior as universal across brands.

Adjust settings in small steps
If the coffee tastes weak or watery
- Raise the drink’s strength setting if your machine offers one. De’Longhi identifies the strength control as one way to improve weak coffee.
- If the manual permits it, move the grinder one increment finer. De’Longhi says to make this adjustment while the grinder is operating; do not turn the grinder when it is stopped unless your model’s manual explicitly allows it.
If the coffee tastes too strong or bitter
- Try a coarser grind in a small increment. JURA distinguishes this from the finer grind it recommends for weak coffee.
- Change only one setting at a time and taste the result before making another adjustment. If your machine adapts to settings over several drinks, allow it time to do so.
These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal grind numbers or directions: control labels, adjustment increments, and safe grinder timing differ by model. See De’Longhi’s weak-coffee guidance and JURA’s IMPRESSA J94 support FAQ for their respective machine guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the beans before changing several settings
Bean choice affects the result too. De’Longhi says origin, blend—including the Arabica and Robusta composition—and roast darkness can influence perceived strength, and recommends coffee intended for espresso machines. Test one suitable bean at a time so you can tell whether the change helped; there is no universal roast level that removes bitterness or makes every machine produce stronger coffee.

For its fully automatic machines, De’Longhi cautions against oily, caramelised, or coated beans because they may stick to the grinder. Its care advice also says to store beans dry and away from light. Follow the bean guidance for your own model; other manufacturers may specify different requirements. See De’Longhi’s fully automatic coffee-machine FAQ.
Check cleaning and coffee flow
If the coffee is watery, slow, or inconsistent, check maintenance alerts and your manual before changing more settings. Philips/Saeco lists a dirty brew group, blocked coffee funnel, and incorrectly prepared or clogged filter as possible causes of watery coffee on applicable models. Its support guidance includes rinsing the brew group, cleaning the funnel, and checking the filter.

- 8-COUNT SUPPLY: Includes eight individually portioned cleaning tablets for routine espresso machine maintenance at home or in the office
- ROUTINE MACHINE CARE: Regular cleaning helps reduce residue buildup and supports consistent brewing performance. Run a clean-water rinse cycle after cleaning
Do not assume your machine’s parts can be accessed or cleaned the same way. De’Longhi says that for its removable brewing units, cleaning with water is done after the appliance has completed shutdown. Consult the exact model’s instructions before removing a brew group, inserting a tool into a funnel, or cleaning internal parts. See Philips’ espresso-machine troubleshooting guidance and De’Longhi’s cleaning instructions.
Check the filter, water hardness, and descaling alerts
A filter that is clogged or was not prepared correctly can affect dispensing on relevant Philips/Saeco machines. Check its installation and replacement instructions for your model. A filter does not necessarily remove the need to descale.

Follow your machine’s descaling prompt and manual, taking local water hardness into account where the machine asks for it. De’Longhi says descaling frequency depends on water hardness, names EcoDecalk in its care guidance, and advises against vinegar because it may leave an acidic taste and smell. JURA likewise directs owners to set water hardness for their machine and descale as indicated. Use only a descaler compatible with your exact model; a recommendation for one brand is not proof of compatibility with another. See De’Longhi’s care FAQ and JURA’s IMPRESSA J94 support FAQ.

A practical troubleshooting order
- Decide whether the coffee is weak/watery or too strong/bitter, and note recent bean or setting changes.
- Adjust the strength setting or grinder by a small step appropriate to the symptom, following your model’s manual.
- If the taste remains off, try espresso-suitable beans and change only the bean, not several variables at once.
- Check maintenance alerts and the manual for brew-group, funnel, and filter checks that apply to your machine.
- Review water-hardness and descaling prompts, then use only cleaning products and procedures approved for your model.
