To find out why an Android phone is draining quickly, check Settings > Battery > Battery usage before changing settings. Look for an app or background activity using unusually much power, then check screen use, signal and connectivity, heat, and whether the drain began after setup or an update. Menu names differ by phone and Android version, so use your manufacturer’s equivalent if the path is different.
Check what is using the battery first
Open your phone’s battery settings and review usage by app and, where available, background activity. This can help distinguish an app keeping the phone busy from heavy screen use or a broader battery problem. Google’s Pixel instructions use Settings > Battery > Battery usage and include an app’s background-use setting; Samsung describes reviewing detailed usage from the battery graph. The screens and labels vary by device.

If a downloaded app stands out, update it first. If it continues to use abnormal power, restrict its background activity where your phone allows, or uninstall it if you do not need it. Restricting an app can delay its notifications or other background functions. Do not force-stop essential system components; Google cautions that some services should not be stopped.

Reduce screen and activity-related drain
The display and sustained tasks can use substantial power. Try a shorter screen timeout, lower brightness, adaptive brightness, or dark theme. Long navigation sessions, video streaming, graphics-heavy games, hotspot use, GPS, calls while moving, camera use, and extended app sessions can also increase consumption. Google notes that Wi-Fi may use less battery than mobile data in the situations covered by its guidance.

- Turn off Bluetooth or location when you do not need them, but remember that some apps and features rely on them.
- Close out of demanding activities when you are finished rather than leaving a navigation session or hotspot running.
- Use the battery-usage screen again after making a change to see whether the pattern has shifted.
Use Battery Saver when you need extra runtime
Android Battery Saver, or a manufacturer’s equivalent low-power mode, can extend use on a low charge. It does so by limiting power-consuming functions: Google says Battery Saver can reduce or stop background activity and may delay visual effects, features, network connections, and app activity. Samsung says Power saving mode restricts background data for unused apps and disables some high-power features. These tradeoffs can affect notifications and convenience.
Check whether the drain is temporary or heat-related
A recent setup, reset, or software update can temporarily raise power use while apps and services are downloaded or optimized. Google says a new or reset Pixel may take a few weeks to fully optimize battery use; it advises seeking help if unusual drain continues after a few days following an update. Samsung UK says consumption may normalize after optimization during the first few days of setup. These are brand-specific guidelines, not a universal timetable for every Android phone.

Heat is a separate warning sign. Google states, “Your battery drains much faster when it’s hot, even when not in use,” and warns that this can damage the battery. Let an overheated phone cool and avoid leaving it in hot conditions, especially when fully charged.

- Restart the phone. This is a low-risk first step if the drain is ongoing.
- Check for Android updates in your phone’s Settings, then install any available update according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Update apps through the app store you use, especially if battery usage points to one app.
- Recheck Battery usage after the phone has had time to settle and after your normal use resumes.
A factory reset is not a first-line battery fix: it removes apps and their associated data. Consider it only after less disruptive checks, and back up important data first.

When to consider battery wear or get support
Phone batteries are consumable components. Samsung explains that capacity gradually declines with repeated charging and discharging and cannot be restored. If the phone remains unreliable after app, settings, and update checks, use model-specific diagnostics and contact the manufacturer or carrier rather than assuming a particular replacement is needed.
Google documents a Battery diagnostics option for “Battery draining too quickly” on Pixel 6 and later. Galaxy owners can use Samsung’s model-appropriate support and diagnostic tools. Available checks and service options depend on the phone model and region; these sources do not establish a universal battery-replacement threshold or price.

Avoid misleading battery-fix downloads
You generally do not need a third-party “battery cleaner” or utility app to start troubleshooting. Samsung warns that some apps use fake fast-drain alerts to encourage downloads. Begin with the phone’s built-in battery-usage screen and manufacturer support guidance.
