UPS says these sets are not designed to be laid on their sides because pressure can affect the display. Manufacturer guidance adds three more concerns: jolts, vibration, and flexing or bending the frame, all of which stress the panel. The one exception you will see in some manuals is a brief, supported screen-down position during a specific task, such as attaching a stand. That is an installation step, not a way to transport the set.

UPS: keep the set upright and protect the display
UPS’s guide, How To Ship a TV, tells shippers to keep a television upright throughout the process. For LCD and LED sets, its stated reason is that the display should not be subjected to extra pressure. The page gives general shipping advice rather than model-specific instructions, and it does not carry a publication date. Its wording is organizational rather than attributed to a named person:

LG: avoid jolts, vibration and frame flex
LG’s owner’s manual, in its Safety and Reference section on lifting and moving, asks owners to avoid jolts and excessive vibration. It also warns against applying pressure that flexes or bends the frame chassis. Those forces reach the panel through the frame, which is why the manual treats the chassis as part of the display’s protection, not just the outer shell.
Sony: do not lay the covered set down
Sony’s XR77/65/55A8x Reference Guide, published on a Sony regional site, covers those specific model families. It warns against stressing the panel and frame, against jolts and excessive vibration, and says not to lay the covered TV down when handling or mounting it. That instruction applies to the models in that guide. It is not a rule for every Sony set, and it is not a rule for every brand.

Why a face-down position is a problem in transit
Each concern in the manufacturer guidance points to the same mechanism. A flat screen is a thin, rigid stack of glass, backlight or LED layers, and a frame that holds them in alignment. Pressure on the front, or a load that bends the chassis, can put stress on that stack. Jolts and sustained vibration add repeated stress over a long journey. Lying the set face-down, or on its side, can also concentrate weight and contact on the screen surface if it shifts or if accessories are placed on top of it. UPS specifically warns that accessories placed on the screen side can damage the set.

Transport and installation are different tasks
The biggest source of confusion is that some manuals show a screen-down position. LG’s guide tells owners to place the screen facing down on a cushioned table or flat surface when attaching the stand. That step is controlled: the set sits still on a padded surface while hardware is fitted. Moving the set from one place to another is a different task with different risks. The table below separates the two.

The fourth row does not say whether the box can be laid on its side. The sources cited here do not state that, so do not assume a box can be tipped over because it is cushioned.

How to move a flat-screen TV safely
These steps combine the shared guidance from UPS, LG and Sony. Where a step depends on the model, the manual for your set takes priority.

- Disconnect the power cord and all cables. LG’s guide recommends unplugging the power cord and removing all cables; Sony says to disconnect all cables before moving the set.
- Use the original carton and packing materials. UPS calls the original retail box the best option. If you no longer have it, use a box made for televisions. Sony recommends the original carton and packing material for moving or repairs.
- Cushion and secure the set inside the box. UPS describes padding the box, using foam edge protectors, and restraining the TV and its accessories so nothing shifts. Keep accessories out of contact with the screen.
- Keep the set upright. Use a stable surface or a vehicle position that keeps it vertical, and avoid anything that presses on the display.
- Lift from the locations in your manual. LG advises holding the top and bottom of the frame firmly and avoiding the transparent area, the speakers, and the speaker grill.
- Use at least two people for a large set. The LG and Sony guidance both call for two or more people for a large TV. Check the lifting instructions in your manual for the specific size class.
- Check the carton labels. Labels on the box may show orientation arrows or handling notes. Follow them alongside the manual.
When a professional packing service makes sense
If you do not have the original packaging and cannot source a properly sized box, a professional packing service is one option. UPS names packing experts as a choice for shippers. The guidance here does not establish pricing, availability, or service terms for any particular provider, so compare them directly before booking.

What the sources do not settle
- No cited source gives a numeric breakage rate or a test comparing face-down and upright transport.
- Sony’s warning applies to the XR77/65/55A8x families it covers. Other models may have different instructions.
- The LG screen-down allowance is for attaching a stand on a cushioned surface, not for moving the set.
- UPS’s guidance is general shipping advice and carries no publication date.
For any specific set, the manufacturer’s manual and the markings on its carton are the authority. If the two conflict, contact the manufacturer before moving the TV.
