Before you paste a JSON payload or JWT into a site you have not vetted, consider what the input contains and where the tool processes it. A payload may include customer data, API details, or credentials; a JWT may act as a bearer credential while it is valid. I built DevProo as a client-side alternative for common developer tasks, but its browser-only behavior is the author’s stated claim, not an independent security audit.
Why a quick online tool can create a data-handling risk
Searching for “JSON formatter online” is an understandable response to a small debugging problem: format a massive payload, inspect a token, or verify a SHA-256 hash and get back to work. The risk is that pasted data may be more sensitive than the task suggests. JSON can contain customer information, API details, or tokens, and a live JWT can function as a bearer credential.

A website that sends submitted input to a backend may expose it to that service’s data-handling practices. That does not mean every online utility stores what you submit, or that every paste causes a confirmed compromise. It means you should not assume an unfamiliar site is private merely because it is convenient or loads in a browser. Prince Mahajan’s article presenting DevProo describes privacy concerns, ad clutter, and accounts or usage limits as frustrations with some utilities; it does not provide comparative measurements of the broader market.

A JWT decoder can display the token’s encoded header and payload in readable form. That is useful for inspecting claims, but decoding does not verify the signature and does not establish that the token is authentic or acceptable to an application. Readable content is not confidential simply because it was encoded.
#1 Best Overall
For cryptographic validation, use the appropriate JWT library or verification workflow with the correct key, and apply the consuming service’s rules, including expected issuer and audience where applicable. A decoder is for inspection, not proof of validity. Treat a live production token as sensitive: while valid, it may be usable by whoever possesses it.
Choose the workflow that matches the task
| Workflow | Data handling | What it establishes | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Third-party hosted utility | Depends on the service’s implementation; input may be sent to a backend. | Depends on the specific tool. A decoder can expose claims, but decoding alone does not verify a JWT. | Only for inputs you are comfortable submitting after assessing the service and its behavior. |
| Local or client-side utility | May process input on your device, if it truly does so and does not transmit it through other data flows. | Depends on the utility. Local processing does not turn decoding into signature validation. | Formatting or inspecting sensitive inputs when browser-only processing is established and the tool’s features fit the task. |
| Application verification workflow | Uses the application’s configured verification process and key material. | Can validate the signature and relevant claims when correctly configured. | Deciding whether a token should be trusted or accepted by a service. |
A client-side label is useful but not a guarantee. If you want to assess a tool’s behavior, open browser developer tools, select the Network panel, and process a harmless test value. Look for requests occurring during processing and inspect what is sent. This is a practical check of observable network activity, not an independent audit: it cannot by itself establish that a service has no other data flows or prove how it handles data in every situation.

What I built instead: DevProo
In his DEV Community article, Prince Mahajan describes building DevProo as a free developer-tools hub and says its JSON and JWT utilities run 100% client-side. The article also lists hash generation, time converters, and other tools. Those are the product author’s descriptions; independent verification of DevProo’s current implementation and network behavior is not established here. For sensitive work, you can apply the same harmless-input network check rather than relying on a label alone.
The practical point is not that one site is automatically safe and every other utility is unsafe. Match the tool to the data and the job: prefer a verified local workflow for sensitive formatting or inspection, and use a proper verification workflow when you need to trust a JWT. Do not paste production secrets into an unfamiliar service simply because the task takes only a few seconds.
