Depending on its metadata and how you share it, the file may include where and when it was taken, the device used, captions, and camera details. If location information is attached, a recipient may be able to learn where the photo was taken. Removing that location is useful for privacy, but it is not the same as removing every metadata field.
What EXIF data can reveal
EXIF is one kind of image metadata: information stored alongside the picture rather than shown as pixels. A photo may also carry other metadata. Apple says associated information can include location coordinates, date and time, device, captions, and camera details. What a recipient receives depends on the actual file and the sharing method.

When Camera has Location Services access, Apple says it can use cellular, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth information to determine coordinates and embed them in photos and videos. If a shared image retains location metadata, its recipient may be able to see where it was taken. In practice, that could expose a home, workplace, or sensitive destination if the image was captured there; that is a privacy implication of location disclosure, not a claim about how often it happens. Apple explains location metadata and its controls.
Recommended Free Tools
Location is only one possible concern. Apple notes that sharing a photo or video can include associated details such as date and time, location, device, and captions. On iPhone, the All Photos Data option can share an original file with edit history and metadata in supported sharing modes. Do not assume every app, service, or route handles metadata the same way. Apple’s iPhone sharing guide describes these options.

Choose the right level of cleanup
| Approach | What it addresses | When to use it | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Remove location from a photo | Location information on the selected item in Apple Photos | You want to clean an existing image before sharing | That all EXIF or other metadata has been removed |
| Turn off Location when sharing | Withholds the photo’s location through the supported Photos sharing option | You want to share without location using the share sheet | That other metadata fields are absent or that every sharing route behaves alike |
| Set Camera location access to Never | Future location collection by Camera through Location Services | You do not want future camera captures to receive location through that permission | That existing photos have been cleaned |
| Use a metadata utility | Can delete metadata groups, depending on file and operation | You need broader processing than location-only controls | That one operation removes every metadata item in every file format |
Remove or withhold location on iPhone and iPad
Remove location from an existing photo
- Open the photo in Photos.
- Tap the More button, then choose Adjust Location.
- Tap No Location.
This changes location information for the selected item; it should not be treated as a full metadata wipe. Apple’s current steps are in its location metadata guide.
Withhold location when sharing
- Select the photo in Photos and open the share sheet.
- Tap Options.
- Turn off Location, then share the photo.
This is a sharing control for location. Check the options you select for each sharing workflow rather than assuming it also removes other metadata. Apple documents the control in its guides to location metadata and sharing photos and videos.
Prevent future Camera location collection
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Tap Camera.
- Choose Never.
This prevents Camera from collecting location through Location Services going forward. It does not remove location from photos already taken.
Hide location in Photos on Mac
- Select the photos in Photos on your Mac.
- Choose Image > Location.
- Choose Hide Location.
Apple also describes how to review photo location information on Mac in its location metadata guide. Hiding location is not proof that every metadata category has been removed from every copy you export.
When broader metadata removal is necessary
If you need to remove more than location, use a metadata utility that supports the file type and fields you intend to clean. ExifTool 13.53 documents deletion of metadata groups, including related groups that may be removed when deleting EXIF or IFD0; it also cautions that not all groups are deletable. That means a broad cleanup should not be described as guaranteed complete sanitization. See the ExifTool tag and group documentation.
- Keep an untouched original if you may later need capture details or editing history.
- Make a separate copy for sharing, then process that copy.
- Inspect the resulting exported file, not only the version displayed in your photo library.
- For sensitive images, verify the exact file and sharing options you will send.
Apple Photos can show information such as date and time, device, camera metadata, and location. On iPhone, open a photo and review its information panel; Apple’s photo and video information guide describes what Photos can display. An inspection of visible details is useful, but for high-sensitivity sharing the actual exported copy is the one to check.
