A failed ping does not automatically mean your server is down. ping sends ICMP echo requests and waits for ICMP echo replies. A timeout can be caused by an ICMP rule, a missing route, a broken link, a misconfigured interface, an asymmetric return path, or a server that deliberately ignores ping. It also cannot tell you whether a web, database, SSH, or other application port is working.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
Start with the server’s numeric IP address, then test your default gateway, trace the route, compare IP and hostname results, inspect filtering, and finally test the actual service over TCP. That sequence separates DNS, local-network, routing, policy, and application problems instead of treating every timeout as the same fault.

What ping actually tests
The ping utility uses the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP). Your computer sends an echo request to an address; the destination, if permitted, returns an echo reply. The result demonstrates reachability for that specific ICMP exchange between those two points.
A successful reply means the address responded to ICMP at that moment. It does not prove that:

- The server’s operating system is healthy in every respect.
- A web, SSH, database, mail, or other application is listening.
- The application port is allowed through the same path.
- Every network path to the server works.
- Large packets, sustained traffic, or other protocols will pass.
Conversely, a timeout proves only that no reply reached you before the utility gave up. The request may have been filtered, the reply may have been filtered, forwarding may have failed, or the destination may be configured not to answer. Cisco describes firewall and access-list filtering, missing routes, physical connectivity problems, and routing loops as common causes of timeout or unreachable results. Some networks intentionally prohibit ICMP.
Read the message before changing anything
The wording narrows the investigation:
- Request timed out: no ICMP reply arrived within the wait period. Filtering, a broken path, congestion, a silent destination, or a lost return route are all possible.
- Destination host unreachable: the local host or an intermediate router generated an explicit error. The device that issued the message matters; it may indicate a missing route or a next-hop/link problem rather than a dead destination.
- Name or host not found: the name was not resolved, so you have not yet tested the server’s network address. Check spelling and name-resolution configuration first.
- Replies with high or variable times: packets are getting through, but congestion, an unstable link, a busy device, a changing route, or a path-specific problem may be affecting latency.
- Some replies and some timeouts: investigate intermittent filtering, interface errors, congestion, multiple paths, routing loops, or a failing physical link.
Record the exact text, packet-loss percentage, and minimum, average, and maximum round-trip times. Those details provide a baseline for each later test.

Run the checks from the nearest dependency to the farthest. Stop at the first layer that fails, fix or explain that result, and then retest.
| Observation | Most useful next focus |
|---|---|
| The default gateway fails | Local interface, cable or wireless link, VLAN, address, subnet mask, gateway policy, or router availability |
| The IP and hostname both fail | Routing, firewall or ACL filtering, physical path, or a destination policy that suppresses ICMP |
| The IP works but the hostname fails | Spelling, the local Hosts file, DNS, or NetBIOS name resolution where it is used |
| Ping fails but a TCP service test works | ICMP filtering or destination policy; the service path is alive even though ping is not permitted |
| Some replies succeed and others time out | Congestion, an unstable link, multiple paths, a routing loop, or intermittent filtering |
| Traceroute stops at one hop | That hop’s route, ACL, return path, or ICMP-response policy; a silent hop alone does not prove forwarding stopped |
1. Confirm the server address
Ping the numeric IP first
Do not begin with a hostname. Run ping against the server’s known IPv4 or IPv6 address. Cisco recommends an IP-address test before a name test because it removes DNS and other name-resolution variables.
- Obtain the address from a trusted server record, console, inventory entry, or administrator. Verify that it belongs to the intended server and interface.
- Run
ping <server-IP>from the affected client or network segment. - Repeat from a second location if one is available. A result that differs by source network points toward a route, ACL, or return-path issue rather than a universal server failure.
- Save the output, including loss and round-trip times, before moving to the next test.
If the numeric address replies, basic ICMP reachability exists and you can move to hostname resolution and service testing. If it fails, DNS is not the first problem to solve; continue down the network path.
Check for the wrong address
An old DNS record, a recently changed interface, a copied address with a typo, or an address from the wrong private network can look exactly like a server outage. Compare the address you are testing with the address configured on the server and with the route used by the client. Test each deliberately configured address when the server has more than one interface, because one interface can be reachable while another is filtered or disconnected.

2. Test your local network and default gateway
Why the gateway test comes next
Your default gateway is the first router used for destinations outside the local subnet. If the client cannot reach it, a remote server test cannot succeed through that path. Check the client’s adapter state, link, VLAN, IP address, subnet mask, and gateway configuration.
- Ping the configured gateway address.
- If it fails, check whether the network cable is seated or the wireless connection is associated with the intended network.
- Verify that the client has the expected address, mask, and gateway, and that it is not using an unintended static setting or duplicate address.
- Confirm that the switch port or wireless network places the device in the correct VLAN.
- Retest the gateway, then the server IP.
A gateway that does not answer ping is not conclusive by itself. Microsoft notes that a router may have ICMP replies disabled; failure to ping or Telnet the default gateway can therefore reflect router policy rather than a failed gateway. If policy intentionally blocks ICMP, use another permitted check to the gateway or a known local service and verify the link and addressing through the network equipment.
Separate a local failure from a remote failure
If the gateway responds but the server address does not, the client’s immediate link is probably functioning. Focus on the route beyond the gateway, an ACL or firewall, the destination interface, and the return path. If both gateway and server fail, resolve the local interface, VLAN, address, mask, or gateway-policy question first; testing application ports before that will produce misleading results.
3. Trace the path hop by hop
Use tracert <server-IP> on Windows or traceroute <server-IP> on Linux and macOS. Traceroute sends probes with progressively higher time-to-live (TTL) values. Routers decrement TTL; when it reaches zero, an intermediate device normally reports its identity, allowing the tool to display the path one hop at a time.
The Tool Desk

- The first hop is normally the local router or gateway. A failure there reinforces the local-network investigation.
- A change from responding hops to timeouts identifies where the trace becomes inconclusive, not necessarily where forwarding ends.
- Some routers forward traffic while suppressing the ICMP messages traceroute uses. Asterisks at one hop can therefore coexist with a working path.
- If every later hop also fails and the destination never responds, investigate the last known forwarding device, its route, ACLs, and the return path.
- If later hops and the destination respond, the silent hop is likely just filtering diagnostic responses.
Compare traces from different source networks when possible. A path that fails only from one location suggests source-specific filtering, an asymmetric route, or a missing return route. A path that changes between runs can indicate multiple routes, load balancing, or instability.
4. Compare the IP test with the hostname test
When the IP responds but the name does not
This pattern points to name resolution rather than basic IP reachability. Microsoft identifies ping as a primary command for troubleshooting connectivity, reachability, and name resolution; the distinction between the two tests is what makes it useful.

- Check the spelling, suffix, and punctuation of the hostname.
- Inspect the local Hosts file for an outdated or incorrect entry.
- Query the configured DNS service and verify that it returns the intended address.
- Check whether the name resolves to IPv4 while you are testing IPv6, or vice versa, and test the returned address explicitly.
- Where the environment uses NetBIOS name resolution, check that service and its scope as well.
- Ping the address returned by name resolution and compare it with the server’s current address.
Do not “fix” a name-resolution problem by permanently replacing a hostname with an IP in applications. Correct the stale record, Hosts entry, or NetBIOS configuration so clients continue to follow legitimate address changes.
When both the IP and hostname fail
DNS is not the leading suspect because the numeric-address test also failed. Continue with the gateway, route, filtering, destination-interface, and return-path checks. A hostname failure in this situation is a consequence of the unreachable address, not proof of a separate DNS outage.

ICMP is frequently filtered deliberately. Check every policy boundary between the client and server:
- The server’s host firewall and endpoint security rules.
- A network firewall between subnets or at the perimeter.
- Router access-control lists.
- Cloud security groups, network ACLs, and interface-level rules.
- Any policy on the client or its local gateway that blocks echo requests or replies.
Look specifically for both directions. An echo request can reach the server while the echo reply is blocked on the way back; the resulting timeout looks identical from the client. Also check whether a rule applies only to one source subnet, protocol family, interface, or address. A policy that permits TCP 443 but denies ICMP is a normal, intentional configuration.
Use policy evidence, not guesswork
Review firewall logs, ACL counters, security-group flow logs, and interface rules at the time of the test. A rule hit that matches the client address and ICMP type is stronger evidence than a timeout alone. If you change a rule for testing, make the narrowest temporary change possible, record it, retest, and restore the intended policy after the cause is confirmed.
6. Test the real service over TCP
Ping does not test an application port. If ICMP is blocked, use a TCP connectivity check to the port the application is supposed to provide, using the platform’s supported TCP test or the relevant client utility. Test the numeric address and port first, then the hostname and port.

- Identify the expected service port from the application configuration.
- Attempt a TCP connection from the same client and network where ping fails.
- If the TCP connection succeeds while ping fails, the address and service path are working; the difference is likely ICMP filtering or a destination policy that suppresses echo replies.
- If TCP also fails, check whether the service is listening, whether its host firewall permits the source, and whether network ACLs allow that port.
- Test from a second source network to distinguish a service-wide outage from a source-specific rule.
Cisco documents TCP ping for environments that prohibit ICMP. A successful ICMP or TCP ping means only that the address responded to that particular type of traffic; it is not proof that every application or protocol is available.
Interpret a TCP failure carefully
- A refused connection usually indicates that the address is reachable but no process is accepting that port, or that an active device rejected it.
- A timeout is consistent with a firewall drop, a missing route, a silent service path, or a nonresponsive host.
- A successful handshake does not guarantee that authentication, HTTP requests, database queries, or application data will work afterward.
7. Investigate intermittent and path-specific failures
Packet loss and changing latency
Run a consistent series of probes and compare loss and minimum, average, and maximum times. Occasional loss or a wide spread can result from congestion, an unstable cable or interface, overloaded equipment, multiple paths, routing loops, or intermittent filtering. Check interface error and discard counters, link state changes, route changes, and device resource pressure on the relevant network equipment.
MTU and packet-size problems
A path can pass small echo requests but fail larger packets when an MTU mismatch prevents fragmentation or the required discovery messages are filtered. If small probes succeed and larger, appropriately controlled probes fail, inspect interface MTU settings and the path’s handling of fragmentation-needed messages. Do not conclude that the server is down solely because one packet size fails.
Asymmetric routing
The outbound route and return route can differ. Your request may reach the server through one firewall while the reply takes another path that lacks a route or permits no ICMP traffic. Compare routing tables and firewall logs on both directions, and test from the server or an adjacent network when authorized. A one-way path commonly produces a timeout even though the destination received the request.
Multiple paths and load balancing
When replies alternate between success and timeout, different paths may be selected for different probes. Compare the addresses and times reported by repeated traces, inspect routing and load-balancing decisions, and look for one faulty link or policy on only one path.
Common situations and the shortest useful response
“The server is up, but ping fails.”
Verify the server through its console or an authorized service check, then test the server IP from the client. If the service’s TCP port works, leave ICMP blocked if that is the intended policy and use the service test for monitoring. If both ICMP and the service fail, inspect the server interface, host firewall, route, and upstream ACLs.
Best Value
“I can ping the IP but not the hostname.”
Check spelling, the Hosts file, DNS answers, and NetBIOS resolution where used. Correct the name record or local override, then retest by hostname. Do not treat a successful IP ping as evidence that name resolution is healthy.
“The gateway does not answer.”
Check the local adapter, cable or wireless association, VLAN, IP address, subnet mask, and gateway setting. Also verify whether the router intentionally suppresses ICMP; a nonresponsive gateway may still forward traffic.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Traceroute stops at one router.”
Determine whether later hops or the destination respond. If they do, the router is probably filtering traceroute messages while forwarding normally. If nothing beyond it responds, investigate that router’s route, ACL, return path, and interface condition.
“The first few pings work, then they time out.”
Check for congestion, link errors, changing routes, multiple paths, routing loops, and intermittent firewall rules. Correlate probe times with interface counters and device logs instead of increasing the ping count indefinitely.
A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Capture the exact error, loss, and latency from the original ping.
- Ping the server’s verified numeric IP.
- Ping the local default gateway, accounting for a policy that may suppress gateway replies.
- Inspect the client’s link, address, mask, gateway, and VLAN.
- Run traceroute or tracert to identify the last known hop.
- Compare numeric-IP and hostname tests; check spelling, Hosts, DNS, and NetBIOS as applicable.
- Review host firewalls, network firewalls, router ACLs, cloud security groups, and interface rules for ICMP in both directions.
- Test the application’s actual TCP port from the same source.
- For intermittent results, examine interface errors, route changes, multiple paths, latency variation, and MTU behavior.
- Document the confirmed cause, the policy decision, and the retest result so the next incident starts with known-good information.
What a proper fix looks like
The fix should match the failed layer. Correct an address, mask, VLAN, or cable problem at the client or interface. Add or repair a route when forwarding is missing. Correct a DNS, Hosts, or NetBIOS record when only the name test fails. Adjust an ACL or firewall only when policy is supposed to permit the traffic. If ICMP is intentionally denied, do not weaken that policy merely to make ping green; monitor and troubleshoot the application with an allowed TCP check instead.
Ping is valuable because it is simple and widely available, but it is one probe of one protocol. A reliable diagnosis combines the numeric-IP test, local-gateway check, hop-by-hop trace, name-resolution comparison, policy review, and an application-level connection test. That combination tells you whether the problem is reachability, routing, naming, filtering, or the service itself.
