Finder will not delete certain apps on a Mac because macOS treats them as required parts of the system or keeps them in the protected System folder. Apple’s own support guidance names Mail, Music, Books, Notes, Podcasts, Maps, News, and Stocks as examples of apps macOS installs that may be protected from removal. The protection comes from macOS security design, principally System Integrity Protection (SIP) and, on macOS 11 or later, the signed system volume. This article explains which apps are affected, what you can still do when an app seems stuck or removable, and why Apple builds the Mac this way.
Which apps Finder will not delete
Apple’s rule is simple: Finder cannot remove apps that the Mac requires. In Apple’s support article Uninstall apps on your Mac (published April 18, 2024), the company gives the built-in apps listed above as examples of apps installed by macOS that may be protected. Apple does not publish a single technical reason for each app on that list, so the practical test is whether Finder offers the app for removal at all. Most readers will see the difference in how the app is handled, not in a warning explaining why.

| Built-in app macOS installs and may protect (Mail, Music, Books, Notes, Podcasts, Maps, News, Stocks) | Finder cannot delete apps the Mac requires | No Finder removal path is documented for these apps |
| Any app located in the System folder | Apps there cannot be deleted through Finder | Leave in place; the folder is reserved by macOS |
| App downloaded from the App Store | Launchpad shows a Delete button for these apps | Use Launchpad’s Delete button |
| Other removable app | Finder can move it to the Trash after you quit it | Follow the Finder steps below |
| App that reports it is in use | Quit, restart, or try Safe Mode, then retry | This is a temporary state, not a protection |
The last row is the one most often confused with the first. An app that refuses to delete because it is open is not the same as an app that macOS requires. Only the first situation is a protected-app case.

How to remove a removable app
For apps that Finder does allow you to delete, Apple’s documented sequence is:
- Quit the app completely. Use the app’s menu or Command-Q so that it is not running in the background.
- Open Finder, choose Applications from the sidebar, and locate the app.
- Drag the app to the Trash, or select it and choose File > Move to Trash.
- If macOS asks for an administrator name and password, enter the credentials of an administrator account on the Mac.
- Choose Finder > Empty Trash to delete the app permanently.
If you installed the app from the App Store, you can also open Launchpad and use the Delete button that appears when you hold the pointer on the icon, as described in Apple’s guide. That button is available only for App Store downloads, which is why an app installed another way may not show it.

When macOS says an app is in use
An “in use” message means the app is running or is otherwise busy. Apple’s advice is to work through these steps in order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Quit the app and try the deletion again.
- If it still refuses, restart the Mac and retry.
- If the problem persists, start the Mac in Safe Mode, then try again. Apple’s start-up instructions differ by Mac model, so follow the Safe Mode procedure in Apple’s documentation for your hardware.
If the app still cannot be removed after these steps, it may be one of the protected apps described earlier rather than an ordinary removable one.

Why macOS protects these apps
Two layers of macOS security explain most of the restriction, and they work together rather than as a single rule.
System Integrity Protection
Apple’s support article About System Integrity Protection on your Mac (published March 20, 2025) says SIP protects the /System, /usr, /bin, /sbin, and /var directories, along with apps that are pre-installed with the operating system. SIP limits what even the root user can change in those locations. Apple says only Apple-signed processes with special entitlements may modify protected areas, such as Apple software updates and Apple installers. Finder, which runs with the permissions of the logged-in user, is not one of those processes.

SIP is a security protection, not a normal setting for clearing storage. Apple’s documentation does not present disabling it as a way to remove apps, and that is not a route this article recommends.

The read-only and signed system volume
The second layer concerns the disk itself. Apple states that macOS 10.15 introduced a read-only system volume. Starting with macOS 11, the system volume is signed, and Apple’s platform security guide, Signed system volume security (published May 13, 2022), explains that this cryptographic signature verifies system content and helps prevent tampering. The signed system volume is part of system integrity protection rather than a separate app-by-app rule.

The version boundary matters if you are comparing Macs. A Mac running macOS 10.15 has the read-only system volume, but the cryptographic verification described for macOS 11 and later applies only from macOS 11 onward. Apple does not state that every app in every location is removable or non-removable for exactly the same reason, so the protection should be understood as a system-wide design rather than a per-app switch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What deleting an app does not do
Removing an app frees the space it used, as Apple notes in the same support article. Apple is explicit that deleting an app does not remove documents created with it, and it does not cancel any subscription tied to that app. Check the app’s account or your Apple account subscriptions separately if you no longer want to be billed.
Why third-party cleaners are not a shortcut
Utilities that promise to clear out “system junk” or remove stubborn apps cannot make a protected app removable. Because SIP and the signed system volume are designed to stop unauthorized changes to these components, a tool that forces their removal is working against the protections Apple describes. If a built-in app is not removable in Finder, the sensible outcome is to leave it in place.
