Workout earbuds usually fall out because they are not seated or rotated as their maker intended, the ear tip or stabilizer does not suit your ear, or the earbud’s shape is a poor match. Try the included tip sizes and model-specific fitting steps first; then check retention with gentle movement. A fit test can help assess the seal, but it cannot guarantee comfort or security through every workout.
Why workout earbuds come loose
- Placement is off: An earbud that is not fully seated or is rotated incorrectly can feel loose. Samsung warns that improper wearing can make Galaxy Buds more likely to fall out. Samsung’s Galaxy Buds/Buds+ fit instructions explain how to attach and position the tips and wingtips.
- The tip or stabilizer is the wrong size: Too small may not hold securely; too large can prevent full seating. Soundcore notes this issue for its Liberty Buds 2, while Bose recommends trying a different tip size or stability band when its QuietComfort Earbuds II feel uncomfortable or insecure. Soundcore’s fit guidance and Bose’s model-specific fit guidance describe those adjustments.
- The design does not suit your ear or activity: Ear shapes vary, and a fit that seems fine while sitting may shift with movement. A shape that works for one person—or for low-movement use—may not be secure for another person’s run or workout.
Do not assume sweat is the cause unless you notice moisture affecting the fit. The relevant troubleshooting steps are to check seating, sizing, stabilizers, and how the earbuds behave during your activity.

How to make earbuds fit more securely
- Check the assembly. Confirm that the correct ear tip is attached and, if your model includes a wingtip or stabilizer, that it is fitted too. Samsung’s instructions for Galaxy Buds/Buds+ call for attaching both before use.
- Reinsert them using your model’s instructions. Insertion directions differ. For the Galaxy Buds/Buds+ models covered by Samsung’s guide, the wingtip faces upward as you insert the bud, followed by an adjustment in rotation. Apple’s Beats fit guide describes inserting and rotating supported Beats earbuds downward. These are model-specific directions, not interchangeable universal angles.
- Try the included tip sizes. Test each size for comfort and stability, one ear at a time if useful; your ears may need different sizes. Bose advises changing the eartip size or stability band for its QuietComfort Earbuds II if the fit is uncomfortable or insecure. Do not force a larger or tighter tip if it hurts.
- Use a fit test if your earbuds support one. Samsung documents an in-app fit test for Galaxy Buds2 Pro and Buds2. Apple documents an Ear Tip Fit Test for supported Beats earbuds. These checks can help assess fit or seal; a passing result does not prove the earbuds will stay comfortable and secure during every exercise.
- Position wings or bands correctly. Make sure a stabilizer is oriented as intended and does not block the earbud from seating fully. A stabilizer that is too large can itself make an earbud feel loose. Replacement tips, wings, fins, and hooks must be compatible with your exact model.
- Keep the earbuds and ears clean and dry. Samsung recommends regular cleaning and periodically removing earbuds to dry the ears and prevent moisture buildup. Follow the care instructions for your model.
- Check retention with gentle movement. After fitting, walk or make gentle head movements and see whether either bud shifts before relying on it for running or vigorous training. This is a practical check, not a manufacturer-validated test protocol.
What to do when the fit still fails
If an earbud feels loose right away
Recheck that it is fully seated, rotated as directed, and fitted with the right tip size. Then check that any wing or stability band is attached and positioned correctly. Make one change at a time so you can tell which adjustment helps.

If it loosens only during exercise
Recheck the fit after movement and consider whether the earbud’s design is suited to your activity. A model with an integrated wing or hook may be worth considering if ordinary in-ear tips do not stay put. No retention feature guarantees a fit for every ear. For example, Beats describes Powerbeats Fit as having flexible secure-fit wingtips and says the earbuds are sweat- and water-resistant for non-water sports and exercise; that is a manufacturer claim, not comparative test evidence. If a fit test passes but the buds still shift
Treat the test as a fit or seal aid, not a workout-retention guarantee. Revisit the tip size, insertion, and stabilizer position, then judge the result with movement relevant to your exercise.
If you are considering accessories or another design
Look for replacement ear tips, wings, fins, or ear hooks explicitly listed as compatible with your exact earbud model. Before choosing another pair, compare its retention design, included tip sizes, fit-test support, comfort for the intended session, and published sweat or water rating for your activity. Verify current specifications on the manufacturer’s page rather than assuming all workout earbuds share the same protection or fit.

Stop if the fit causes pain or irritation
Remove the earbuds if you feel pain or develop skin irritation; do not try to solve discomfort by forcing a tighter fit. Samsung advises consulting a doctor if pain or irritation occurs.
