On the May 2022 change, The Guardian attributed this explanation to the New York Times: “This is entirely unintentional and a coincidence – today’s original answer was loaded into Wordle last year.” The statement was not attributed to a named employee.
Does the UK get a different answer from the US?
The available evidence does not establish that the official NYT game assigns different answers by country. Wordle.uk says there is one official answer worldwide and that local midnight can make players appear to be on different puzzles, but that claim is not confirmed here by current NYT documentation. It is safer to describe a mismatch as a difference in game version or puzzle state unless stronger evidence shows otherwise.

Puzzle numbers can also be confusing when players compare results across a date boundary. Wordle.uk reports that the number may differ by one in this situation; because this is secondary guidance, use the date shown in each game as well as the puzzle number when comparing.
What about Wordle on Discord?
Discord’s licensed Wordle Activity support page says its daily answer matches NYT Games. It also says progress does not sync between the Activity and NYT Games, so a player’s statistics can differ even when the daily answer matches. - Compare the date. Make sure both players mean the same calendar-day puzzle, particularly if they are in different time zones.
- Compare the game and platform. Check that both are playing the current NYT-hosted Wordle rather than an old page, an archive or an unofficial clone.
