“Read Mode” can mean a read-only permission mode or a reading-focused layout, and the fix depends on which Word app and control you mean. In desktop Word, Viewing is read-only and switching to Editing requires permission. In Word for the web, Reading view is separate from desktop Word’s Full Screen Reading view, which is not available in the browser.
First identify which Word view or mode is greyed out
Desktop Word uses document modes called Viewing, Reviewing, and Editing. Viewing is read-only; whether you can select Editing or Reviewing depends on your permission to the document. In Word for the web, Reading and Editing are separate views. The browser version does not include every view available in desktop Word.

So, a greyed-out control does not necessarily mean Word is malfunctioning. It may be unavailable in that version of Word, or the document may not allow you to edit it.

To edit a document in Reading view
When the owner permits editing, choose Edit Document > Edit to switch from Reading view to editing. If the edit command is missing or unavailable, ask the document owner to grant you edit access.

If you mean Full Screen Reading
Full Screen Reading is a desktop Word view, not a Word-for-the-web feature. Open the file in desktop Word to use it. Other desktop views, including Outline, Draft, and Web Layout, are also unavailable in Word for the web.
Check file type and protection
Browser support varies by file type and protection state. Word for the web can display older .doc files, but its behavior differs from working with .docx files. Certain protected files must be opened in the desktop app. Confirm the file format and whether it is protected before considering conversion; converting a file is not a general fix for a permissions restriction.
If Editing or Reviewing is unavailable in desktop Word
Use the mode selector near Share if the mode you need is offered. If Editing is absent or disabled, the document owner or your organization may have restricted editing, or the document may have protection settings. Request edit permission from the owner or administrator. Some restrictions cannot be changed by a reader locally; where changing a restriction is appropriate and you have authority to do so, Microsoft directs users to open the document in desktop Word.
Read-only opening is not the same as edit permission
A setting such as Always Open Read-Only affects how a document opens. It does not itself establish whether you have permission to edit the file. Actual editing access depends on sharing permissions and any document restrictions. If the file opens read-only, check both its opening behavior and your access rights rather than assuming that changing one will override the other.
