If an Xbox controller lights up or vibrates but Windows does not recognize it, the most likely problem is a broken USB data path, not a lack of power. A charge-only or damaged cable can power the controller while carrying no data. Start with a known-good data cable connected directly to a different USB port, then use Device Manager to identify whether Windows sees the device.
Try this five-minute fix first
- Disconnect the controller.
- Replace the cable with a known-good cable that explicitly supports data or sync.
- Connect directly to the PC, not through a hub, dock, monitor, extension, or adapter. On a desktop, try a rear motherboard port.
- Press the Xbox button and wait several seconds for Windows to enumerate it.
- Restart Windows, reconnect, and check Device Manager.
- When Windows recognizes it, test Xbox Accessories or
joy.cpl.
USB-C describes the connector shape, not every capability of the cable. Xbox One controllers commonly use micro-USB; Xbox Series X|S and Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 models generally use USB-C. A wired Xbox 360 controller follows a separate, older driver path.
Microsoft’s USB guidance recommends changing ports, avoiding problematic hubs and docks, and checking device errors: Windows USB troubleshooting.
Identify what the symptom means
No light, vibration, or Windows response
Suspect the cable, USB port, controller socket, or controller hardware. Test two known-good data cables and two direct ports before assuming the controller is defective.

The Xbox button lights up, but Windows sees nothing
Power is reaching the controller, but data may not be. Replace the cable first, bypass hubs and docks, and test another computer. A light does not prove that USB communication works.
Windows detects it, but Xbox Accessories does not
Check the device entry and error code, then restart Windows and update or reinstall Xbox Accessories. The app cannot repair a connection that Windows never enumerates.
Windows and Xbox Accessories work, but a game does not
The USB layer is probably working. Troubleshoot the game, launcher, Steam Input, or conflicting remapping software instead of replacing the controller.
Check whether Windows detects the controller
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Plug and unplug the controller while watching for a changing entry.
- Inspect Human Interface Devices, Xbox Peripherals (if present), Universal Serial Bus controllers, Other devices, and Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for names such as Xbox Controller, Xbox Wireless Controller, Microsoft Xbox One Controller, Controller, or Unknown USB Device.
- Open Properties and read Device status, including any error code.
| What you see | Likely meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing changes when plugged in | Cable, port, socket, or hardware problem | Try another data cable, direct port, and PC |
| Unknown USB Device or Code 43 | USB communication or driver failure | Change cable and port; test another PC before deeper repairs |
| Code 28 | Windows lacks a driver | Run Windows Update and inspect optional driver updates |
| Normal controller entry | USB layer is probably functioning | Test joy.cpl, Xbox Accessories, and the game |
| Entry repeatedly appears and disappears | Unstable cable, loose socket, power management, firmware, or failing hardware | Use a direct port and another PC; stop firmware attempts until stable |
Exact categories and labels vary by Windows release. Microsoft’s error-code guidance is available at its USB support page.

Reinstall only the controller-related device
If Device Manager shows a suspicious controller or unknown USB entry, use this targeted recovery—not a blanket removal of every HID or USB device:
- Unplug the controller.
- Right-click the controller-related entry and select Uninstall device.
- Only select a driver-removal checkbox when you have clearly identified the controller and understand the option.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect directly with a data cable.
This reinstall-and-reconnect sequence is also suggested in Microsoft Q&A community guidance: Xbox controller troubleshooting. Do not uninstall random keyboard, mouse, Bluetooth, chipset, or generic USB entries.
Install Windows updates
- Open Settings and select Windows Update.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates > Driver updates, if that section is present.
- Install relevant Microsoft or Xbox entries, then restart again.
Labels can change between releases, and optional updates are not guaranteed to fix a controller. Avoid third-party “Xbox driver” download sites; current Xbox One and Series controllers normally receive their Windows driver through Windows.
This article focuses on Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; its menus and update behavior may differ.

Use Xbox Accessories only after USB is stable
Install or update the free Xbox Accessories app, connect the recognized controller by USB, and wait for it to appear. The app can provide supported firmware updates, profiles, and button remapping, depending on controller model, Windows version, and connection type.
- Connect with a known-good data cable.
- Open Xbox Accessories.
- Apply firmware only when the app offers it and the connection remains stable.
- Keep the controller connected throughout the update.
If the app repeatedly loses the controller, stop retrying indefinitely. Try another PC or an Xbox console if available. Steam’s support instructions also direct Windows users to Xbox Accessories for firmware updates when the controller is connected by USB: Steam controller support.
When the controller works in Windows but not in a game
- Press Win + R, enter
joy.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the controller, choose Properties, and test buttons, sticks, triggers, and vibration where available.
- Restart the game after connecting the controller.
- Review the game’s controller settings.
- In Steam, inspect Settings > Controller and the game’s per-title settings. Try toggling Steam Input.
- Close remapping utilities and virtual-controller software temporarily; do not run multiple input wrappers at once.
- Confirm that the game supports Xbox/XInput controllers.
Separate USB, Bluetooth, and Xbox Wireless
These are different connection paths. A controller can work over Bluetooth while its USB data connection is broken, or charge by USB while failing to transmit data.
- USB: best for diagnosis and required for some Xbox Accessories tasks; it depends on a working data cable and controller socket.
- Bluetooth: avoids a cable but requires a compatible controller and PC and can be affected by pairing, drivers, interference, and supported features. Microsoft lists Windows compatibility and Bluetooth information for current controllers at the product page.
- Xbox Wireless: requires a compatible Xbox Wireless Adapter or Xbox console. Adapter availability and current pricing should be checked on official Microsoft channels; technical documentation is at Microsoft’s adapter document.
To force a clean wired test, temporarily turn off Bluetooth, remove the controller under Settings > Bluetooth & devices if necessary, restart, and reconnect by USB.

Know when the hardware is probably faulty
Suspect the controller or its USB socket when it fails with multiple known-good data cables, separate direct ports, and another PC or Xbox console. A visibly loose socket, disconnects whenever the cable moves, or failure of both wired and wireless connections strengthens that diagnosis. A replacement cable is the sensible first purchase; replace the controller only after those cross-device tests fail.
For a replacement, match micro-USB to many Xbox One models and USB-C to Series X|S or Elite Series 2. Microsoft’s current controller page lists Windows compatibility, Bluetooth, and USB-C wired use: Xbox Wireless Controller. A controller-and-cable bundle is listed at Microsoft’s USB-C bundle page; prices and stock change.
Xbox 360 controllers are an exception
A wired Xbox 360 controller is an older product and is not interchangeable with modern Xbox One or Series troubleshooting. It may use legacy Xbox 360 software or drivers and may not appear in Xbox Accessories. See the legacy documentation at Microsoft’s Xbox 360 guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Xbox controller charge but not connect?
Charging proves only that power reaches the controller. Use a known-good data cable and a direct USB port, then check Device Manager.

Why does Xbox Accessories say “connect a device”?
Windows has not established a stable recognized connection, or the app needs restarting or updating. Verify Device Manager first.
Do I need a special Xbox driver?
Usually no. Windows supplies the normal Xbox One and Series controller driver through Windows Update.
How do I know whether the USB port is broken?
Test the controller with two direct ports and test another USB device in the suspect port. A second PC is the strongest comparison.
