First test the device, cable, and another port; then check USB-C feature compatibility, power, debris, and software clues. This sequence helps narrow down the cause without assuming one fix applies to every computer or connector.
1. Check whether the problem follows the device or cable
- Disconnect the device, then reconnect it firmly.
- Try the same device in another port on the computer.
- Try a known-good cable that supports the function you need.
- If possible, connect the device and cable to another computer.
If the same device and cable fail on multiple computers, the device or cable is a more likely cause. If they work elsewhere but not through one port, the port or that computer’s configuration becomes more likely; this test alone does not prove physical damage. For an iPhone or iPad, Apple says the cable used for computer recognition must support both data and charging: Apple’s device-recognition steps.

2. Connect directly and check USB-C capabilities
While troubleshooting, connect one device directly to the computer instead of through a hub or dock. For a self-powered hub, check that its AC adapter is connected. Hubs, docks, or the wrong USB-C port can limit what a connection can do.

The computer port, cable, and peripheral must all support the function you are trying to use—data, charging, display output, or Thunderbolt. A cable may charge a device yet lack the data rate or alternate-mode support required for another task. Check the device makers’ compatibility guidance and compare the specific features each part supports. Microsoft’s USB-C troubleshooting guide explains that some problems depend on the port or device’s capabilities.

3. Troubleshoot charging and power alerts
If a device will not charge, or the computer reports a USB power issue, check the entire power path rather than just the connector:
- Confirm the outlet works and use the appropriate charger and cable.
- Connect to a computer port that supports charging; not every USB port does.
- Bypass the hub while testing. If you use a self-powered hub, connect its AC adapter.
- On Windows, connect the computer to external power and disconnect USB devices you are not using if the connected device needs more power.
Windows may not provide enough power for a USB device, and a charger, cable, or hub can also be the limiting part of the setup. See Microsoft’s USB-C guidance and Apple’s Mac USB device and power troubleshooting.

4. Check the port for debris without probing it
Dust or debris can stop a connector from seating fully or interfere with charging. Microsoft and Apple mention compressed air in their USB-C guidance: Microsoft’s cleaning instruction and Apple’s Mac charging guidance. Treat cleaning as a possible troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed repair. Do not insert metal picks or apply liquids.
If the connector is visibly damaged or loose, the cable only works when moved, or the problem persists, stop forcing the connection and seek advice for the exact device. Apple specifically flags a cable or power supply that works only when moved as needing evaluation.

5. Use software clues and device prompts
Windows: check Device Manager
If Windows reports that a USB device is unrecognized, note the error code shown in Device Manager and follow the code-specific instructions in Microsoft’s USB troubleshooting guide. The guide covers Windows 11 and Windows 10; Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so Windows 10 should not be treated as a currently supported version.
iPhone or iPad: respond to the computer prompt
When connecting an iPhone or iPad to a Windows PC or Mac, check the device for a trust or accessory-access prompt and respond to it. Apple also recommends checking for software conflicts and updates in its steps for resolving computer recognition problems. Confirm that the cable supports both charging and data before treating a failure to appear on the computer as a port fault.

Mac: use charging-specific guidance
For a Mac USB-C charging problem, follow Apple’s instructions for USB devices and power alerts. Apple’s SMC-reset advice is conditional on the Intel Mac charging scenario described there; it is not a general remedy for every Mac USB issue.

6. Decide when the port needs service
If a known-good device and cable still fail after direct connection, capability checks, and relevant software steps, contact the computer maker or a qualified repair provider. Visible damage, looseness, or a connection that depends on moving the cable also warrants evaluation. Port replacement and controller repair depend on the computer model and diagnosis, so do not choose parts or disassemble a computer based on symptoms alone.

For a final cable or hub check, compare the required data, charging, display, or Thunderbolt feature with the specifications for the computer port and peripheral. For charging, verify the power requirement and whether a hub needs its own AC adapter; connector fit alone does not establish compatibility.
