If your Razer BlackWidow’s lighting has gone dark, first check the lighting controls in Razer Synapse and connect the keyboard directly to your computer. Then update Synapse and any firmware available for your exact model, and test whether the issue changes when Synapse is disabled. A hard reset is a later option—but Razer documents it only for specific models, and it clears onboard profiles and lighting configurations.
Before troubleshooting, identify what stopped working
BlackWidow models differ, so note the exact model name or number before changing settings or attempting a reset. Also check whether the keyboard still types, whether every key is unlit or only some keys, and whether the problem began after a software update, a settings change, or moving the keyboard to another connection. These details help distinguish a lighting configuration issue from a broader detection or connection problem.

1. Check the lighting settings in Razer Synapse
Razer says Chroma lighting on supported keyboards is configured through compatible Razer Synapse software. Open Synapse, select the keyboard if it appears, and check that lighting is enabled, brightness is not set so low that the keys appear dark, and the selected effect is visible. Controls and available effects can vary by model; Razer’s BlackWidow V4 Pro 75% support page and BlackWidow Chroma V2 support page are examples of model-specific support information.

Connect the keyboard directly to the computer, without a USB hub, extender, or KVM switch. If it remains dark, try another USB port; Razer recommends a rear-panel port on desktop computers. Some BlackWidow models have two USB connectors, so check the instructions for your exact model and connect both if required. See Razer’s BlackWidow support and FAQs for model-specific guidance.

3. Update software, then isolate Synapse
Razer’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating the keyboard firmware when an updater is available for that exact model, updating Synapse, and installing operating-system updates. Use the support page for your model to find the applicable firmware; do not apply an updater intended for a different BlackWidow.
As a diagnostic test, disable or close Synapse and see whether lighting behavior changes. If the keyboard works as expected with Synapse disabled, Razer suggests a clean Synapse reinstall. That result makes software worth investigating, but it does not by itself prove Synapse is the cause. Razer’s general troubleshooting steps are in its keyboard troubleshooting article.

4. Use a hard reset only if Razer lists your model
Razer says a hard reset can help when lighting behaves unexpectedly, but its documented procedure applies only to a limited set of models. Check the applicable-model list on Razer’s hard-reset instructions before proceeding. Do not assume the shortcut works for every BlackWidow.

5. Test another port or computer, then contact Razer
If the model-specific reset does not resolve the problem, try another direct USB port and, if available, another computer. If the keyboard remains dark, contact Razer Support with the model number and the checks you have completed. Without examining the keyboard, the symptoms alone do not establish whether it has a hardware fault or needs repair or replacement.
