If your iPad screen will not rotate, first turn off Rotation Lock: swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, tap the Rotation Lock control so it is off, close Control Center, and turn the iPad sideways. If that does not work, check whether the app supports landscape mode, then restart the iPad.

Check whether the app supports rotation
Rotation can depend on the app. Apple notes that some apps do not support screen rotation, even when rotation is enabled. Try Safari or Messages; Apple identifies both as apps that work in landscape mode. If either rotates but the original app does not, the issue may be that app’s orientation support rather than the iPad’s Rotation Lock setting. See Apple’s explanation of app rotation.

If Rotation Lock is missing, check for a side switch
Some iPad models have a physical side switch that can be assigned to rotation lock or mute. If your iPad has this switch and you cannot find Rotation Lock in Control Center, open Settings > General > Use Side Switch To and check its assignment. Apple documents this route in its screen-rotation guidance.
Restart the iPad if rotation still fails
If Rotation Lock is off and Safari or Messages still will not rotate, restart the iPad. Apple recommends a restart when the screen still will not rotate after the setting check. The Apple troubleshooting steps do not identify a specific hardware fault based on this symptom alone.

When to contact Apple for diagnosis
If rotation remains unavailable after checking the setting, testing a landscape-capable app, and restarting, contact Apple Support or a service provider. Apple says technicians can inspect the iPad and explain service options on its iPad repair page. Service availability and pricing vary by location; the symptom by itself does not establish that a particular part needs repair.
