Why Won’t My Bluetooth Speaker Connect to My PS5?

PS5 does not support ordinary Bluetooth audio devices as direct audio output. Find out how to route audio through a compatible TV or AV system, or use a PS5-supported wireless connection.

An ordinary Bluetooth speaker generally cannot pair directly with a PS5 as its audio output. PlayStation’s current support guidance for error CE-109531-9 says Bluetooth audio devices aren’t compatible with PS5 consoles. To reuse a speaker, check whether your TV or AV system can send its HDMI audio to that speaker; otherwise, use a PS5-supported audio connection.

What the PS5 compatibility message means

If you are trying to pair a Bluetooth speaker to the PS5 itself, the issue is generally compatibility—not a hidden speaker setting or a pairing sequence you have missed. PlayStation’s support page for error CE-109531-9 states: “Your Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible with PlayStation®5 consoles.” It describes the error as an issue with the audio device trying to connect and advises trying a different audio device.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

That guidance is the clearest answer for a speaker that will not connect directly to the console. Bluetooth audio support should not be inferred merely because the PS5 has Bluetooth-related functions or can connect to certain wireless accessories. The relevant question is whether PlayStation supports that particular connection as an audio output. For generic Bluetooth audio devices, PlayStation’s current error guidance says it does not.

A separate PlayStation FAQ, published November 9, 2020, says third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth will not be supported on PS5, while noting that most USB and analog headsets will be supported. That FAQ specifically discusses headsets and is older; the current CE-109531-9 page is the more direct reference for the broader Bluetooth-audio compatibility issue.

Choose the connection route that fits your setup

There are three different arrangements people may mean when they say they want a Bluetooth speaker connected to a PS5. They are not interchangeable: the first tries to pair with the console, the second relies on the TV or AV equipment, and the third uses a console-supported wireless connection.

Route What connects to what What is established Best fit
Direct Bluetooth pairing The speaker pairs with the PS5 as its audio output. PlayStation’s CE-109531-9 guidance says Bluetooth audio devices are not compatible with PS5 consoles. Not a supported route for an ordinary Bluetooth speaker.
TV or AV system after HDMI The PS5 sends audio over HDMI to the TV or AV system; that equipment may then send audio to a speaker. PlayStation documents PS5 HDMI audio settings. Whether a particular TV or AV system can output to a particular Bluetooth speaker depends on those devices’ manuals. Potentially useful if you already own compatible intermediary equipment.
PlayStation Link A supported wireless speaker connects to the PS5 using PlayStation Link. PlayStation identifies PULSE Elevate as using PlayStation Link with PS5. Its Bluetooth connection is for compatible separate devices, such as a TV or smartphone. A wireless speaker setup designed to work with PS5, rather than a way to enable generic Bluetooth pairing.

The key difference is which device performs the audio connection. Direct pairing asks the PS5 to send audio over Bluetooth to a generic speaker, which PlayStation’s current guidance does not support. With the HDMI route, the console sends audio to a TV or AV system, and that equipment must provide the additional output. With PlayStation Link, the console uses a connection PlayStation documents for that product. Those routes have different compatibility checks, so success with one device—such as pairing the speaker with a phone—does not prove another route will work.

Try the TV or AV system as the audio path

If you want to keep using the speaker you already own, first find out whether the device receiving the PS5’s HDMI signal can send its own audio to that speaker. In this arrangement, the speaker is not paired to the PS5. The TV or AV equipment handles the connection after receiving the console’s audio.

  1. Identify where the PS5’s HDMI cable goes. If it runs to a TV, check that TV’s manual. If it runs through an AV amplifier or another system, check that equipment’s manual instead.
  2. Look up audio output support on that specific model. Confirm whether it can output audio to a Bluetooth speaker, and follow its documented pairing and output-selection steps. Menus and capabilities vary by model; PlayStation’s instructions do not establish a universal TV-to-speaker setup.
  3. Check the PS5’s output selection. On the console, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and select the intended output device.
  4. Match the HDMI device type if an AV amplifier is in the chain. PlayStation’s audio guidance includes an HDMI device-type setting for an AV system, as well as options for channel count and speaker positions. Configure the available options to match the system you actually use.
  5. Test the full chain. Confirm that the TV or AV system is receiving PS5 audio and that it is set to send that audio to the speaker. If the intermediary does not document Bluetooth audio output, do not assume the PS5 can supply that missing capability.

This route depends on the intermediary device, not just the speaker. A Bluetooth speaker may pair successfully with a phone yet still not work in this setup if the TV or AV system cannot send audio to it. Likewise, the PS5’s HDMI settings can help select and configure its HDMI audio destination, but they cannot confirm the capabilities or menu steps of every display or receiver.

Check the PS5’s audio output settings

When the console is connected to a TV or AV system, start with the PS5’s own audio output page. The available output choices depend on the equipment connected to the console, so choose the device that matches your actual HDMI path rather than looking for a generic Bluetooth-speaker option.

  • Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
  • Review the selected output device and choose the intended connected destination.
  • If the PS5 feeds an AV amplifier, select the matching HDMI device type and adjust its channel-count and speaker-position options as appropriate for that system.

If the speaker is paired to the TV or AV system but the PS5’s sound is not reaching it, troubleshoot each link separately: console to HDMI equipment, then HDMI equipment to speaker. The PS5 page can guide the first link; the equipment manual must guide the second. Without the make and model of the TV, receiver, and speaker, there is no reliable universal menu path for the latter.

When checking settings, avoid treating a listed HDMI output or an AV-amplifier option as proof that Bluetooth is available. Those settings configure the console’s connection to the HDMI equipment. Whether that equipment can then pass audio to a Bluetooth speaker is a separate, model-specific capability.

Use a wireless speaker connection documented for PS5

PlayStation lists PULSE Elevate as a desktop speaker system for PS5, PC, and Mac. Its PS5 connection uses PlayStation Link. The speaker also supports Bluetooth for compatible separate devices, such as a TV or smartphone, but that Bluetooth feature should not be confused with how it connects to a PS5.

This distinction matters when choosing equipment: a product having Bluetooth does not, by itself, establish that it can act as a directly paired PS5 speaker. Verify that the console connection method is explicitly supported for PS5. For PULSE Elevate, PlayStation’s documented console route is PlayStation Link—not generic Bluetooth pairing.

If your priority is reusing an existing speaker, first investigate the TV/AV route rather than assuming you need to replace it. If you are shopping for a speaker intended for a PS5 setup, compare products by their documented console connection method and explicit PS5 support—not simply by whether “Bluetooth” appears in the product description. PlayStation Link is the relevant documented connection for PULSE Elevate; its Bluetooth feature serves compatible separate devices.

Troubleshoot by identifying where pairing fails

If you are pairing the speaker directly to the PS5

Check whether the console displays error CE-109531-9 or otherwise fails to accept the Bluetooth audio device. PlayStation’s guidance identifies Bluetooth audio incompatibility as the likely issue and recommends trying a different audio device. Repeating a pairing attempt or searching for a speaker-specific PS5 menu is unlikely to change that compatibility limit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are pairing the speaker to a TV or AV system

Verify that the speaker is paired to the intermediary device—not to the PS5—and that the intermediary is configured to output audio to it. Consult the manual for the exact model because the PS5 support pages do not specify the Bluetooth features, labels, or setup steps for third-party TVs and AV systems.

If the console is connected through an AV amplifier

Check that the PS5’s selected output and HDMI device type correspond to the connected amplifier. Review the amplifier-related channel-count and speaker-position settings provided in the PS5 audio menu. If the console is sending audio to the intended HDMI device but the speaker remains silent, investigate the amplifier’s output configuration and the speaker connection separately.

If you are shopping for a wireless setup

Check the product’s stated PS5 connection method before buying. Look for explicit PS5 support and distinguish a console link such as PlayStation Link from Bluetooth support intended for phones or other compatible devices. PlayStation documents PULSE Elevate as one PS5 option using PlayStation Link; that does not establish compatibility for unrelated Bluetooth speakers or transmitters.

What this does—and does not—tell you about adapters

The documented PS5 audio route in PlayStation’s guidance includes HDMI-connected TVs and AV systems, with settings for the output device and HDMI equipment. The cited guidance does not verify that a generic Bluetooth transmitter will work with a PS5, nor does it establish a universal setup for sending HDMI audio from a particular TV to a Bluetooth speaker.

Before relying on an adapter, identify where it would connect and which device would send audio to it. Then check the relevant manuals for explicit compatibility with that audio source and speaker. Without model-specific documentation, it is not possible to promise that a transmitter will be recognized by the console, that a TV will pass audio to it, or that the resulting setup will behave as intended.

In other words, an adapter is not a research-supported workaround for the PS5’s direct Bluetooth-audio limit. The available guidance does not confirm a generic transmitter, a particular adapter type, or a specific TV-and-speaker combination. Treat each proposed connection as a separate compatibility question and look for confirmation from the manufacturer of the device that would send the audio.

The practical answer for common setups

  • Ordinary Bluetooth speaker, paired directly to PS5: PlayStation identifies Bluetooth audio devices as incompatible with PS5 consoles.
  • Speaker connected to a TV or AV system: It may work if that equipment supports the required audio output; check its model-specific documentation.
  • Wireless speaker intended for PS5: Verify an explicitly supported console connection. PULSE Elevate uses PlayStation Link with PS5, while its Bluetooth connection serves compatible separate devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect a regular Bluetooth speaker directly to my PS5?

PlayStation’s current CE-109531-9 guidance says Bluetooth audio devices are not compatible with PS5 consoles. A generic Bluetooth speaker therefore is not a supported direct audio output; the problem is generally compatibility, not a missed pairing step.

Why does my PS5 say my Bluetooth audio device isn’t compatible?

That is PlayStation’s stated explanation for error CE-109531-9: the Bluetooth audio device trying to connect is not compatible with PS5. PlayStation advises trying a different audio device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use my Bluetooth speaker through my TV instead?

Possibly, if the TV receiving the PS5’s HDMI audio supports output to that speaker. Pair the speaker with the TV, not the PS5, and check the TV’s manual for its capabilities and setup steps. The route depends on the specific TV and speaker.

Will a Bluetooth transmitter or adapter make my speaker work with PS5?

The cited PlayStation guidance does not verify a generic Bluetooth transmitter or adapter as a PS5 workaround. Check the manuals for the exact source, adapter, and speaker combination before relying on it.

Is PULSE Elevate connected to PS5 by Bluetooth?

PlayStation documents PULSE Elevate as connecting to PS5 through PlayStation Link. Its Bluetooth connectivity is for compatible separate devices such as a TV or smartphone, so it is not the PS5 connection method.

Does the PS5 support Bluetooth headsets?

PlayStation’s FAQ, published November 9, 2020, says third-party wireless headsets that use Bluetooth will not be supported, while most USB and analog headsets will be supported. For current general Bluetooth-audio wording, PlayStation’s CE-109531-9 support page is the more direct source.

The Bottom Line

An ordinary Bluetooth speaker generally will not pair directly to a PS5 as an audio output. Check whether your TV or AV system can send its HDMI audio to the speaker, and configure the PS5 under Settings > Sound > Audio Output. If you want a wireless speaker connection documented for PS5, PlayStation identifies PULSE Elevate as using PlayStation Link; its Bluetooth feature is for compatible separate devices.
