AirPods set up with an iPhone should be available to a Mac signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account. If they do not connect automatically, check the Mac’s connection preference first, then confirm account and compatibility conditions, Bluetooth, charging, and audio output. If those checks fail, pair them manually; reset only as a later step.
First, identify what “won’t connect automatically” means
There are a few different problems that can sound the same. AirPods may never have been paired with the Mac, may be paired but set to connect only after a manual selection, may connect while the Mac continues playing through its speakers, or may switch to another Apple device instead. The right fix depends on which behavior you see.

- They are missing from Bluetooth: check setup, account eligibility, and pairing mode.
- They appear but do not connect on their own: check the Mac’s per-AirPods connection preference.
- They show as connected but sound comes from the Mac: select AirPods as the audio output.
- They connect, then move to another Apple device: investigate automatic switching, which is separate from connecting to the Mac.
Set the Mac to connect automatically
macOS has a connection preference for each set of AirPods. Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, select the information or options control beside the AirPods, and choose automatic connection. If the preference is When Last Connected to This Mac, the Mac is deliberately less likely to connect unless the AirPods were last used with it. Menu wording and placement can vary by macOS release.

Confirm setup, Apple Account, and compatibility
Apple’s setup guidance says AirPods set up with an iPhone should connect to a Mac signed in to iCloud with the same Apple Account. Check that the Mac is using the account associated with the iPhone setup. Apple’s instructions for automatic switching also require compatible AirPods and supported operating-system versions; setup guidance calls for two-factor authentication. These requirements differ by AirPods generation, so use Apple’s current model-specific information rather than assuming one macOS version works for every model. See Apple’s AirPods connection and setup guidance and its Mac connection-preference instructions.

Check Bluetooth, charge, and audio output
- Install the latest macOS update available for the Mac.
- Open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put both AirPods in their case and confirm they are charging.
- Put the AirPods in your ears, then select them from Control Center or the Bluetooth device list.
- If they appear connected but the Mac speakers still play, open Control Center’s sound controls and select the AirPods as the output device.
A device appearing in Bluetooth and the Mac routing audio to it are distinct checks. Apple’s troubleshooting article, published September 24, 2026, recommends updating macOS, checking that both AirPods charge, and trying to select them again: If your AirPods or AirPods Pro won’t connect.
Re-pair before you reset
If the basic checks do not help, follow Apple’s escalation order: close the case with both AirPods inside for 15 seconds, then reopen it. If they still do not connect, pair them with the Mac manually:

Pairing controls vary by generation. Apple’s current instructions use a double-tap on the front of the case for certain newer models, while other models use the setup button on the rear. Follow the instructions for your exact AirPods model rather than trying one control on every case. If manual pairing still fails, Apple advises resetting the AirPods; consult the model-specific reset steps before doing so because the controls differ.

Connecting to a Mac means establishing a connection between the AirPods and that Mac. Automatic switching is the separate feature that can move compatible AirPods among supported Apple devices based on activity—for example, from Mac audio to an iPhone call. It requires supported models, software, and account conditions, and the Mac may show a notification asking you to confirm a switch. Apple documents the supported setup and behavior in its Mac guide to using AirPods. If you prefer the AirPods to stay associated with the Mac unless you choose otherwise, set their connection preference to When Last Connected to This Mac in Bluetooth settings.
