Why Windows Users Consider Switching to Linux Mint

Linux Mint offers a familiar desktop approach and graphical maintenance tools, but Windows users should verify essential apps and hardware before installing.

Linux Mint is designed to feel approachable to people arriving from Windows, but switching still means changing operating systems—not simply replacing one familiar desktop with another. Mint’s appeal lies in its familiar desktop approach and graphical tools for setup and maintenance; whether it suits you depends on the apps, devices and workflows you rely on.

What makes Linux Mint feel approachable to Windows users?

The Linux Mint project describes Mint as a modern, comfortable desktop and says many of its users come from Windows. That is the project’s own promotional description, not an independently measured count of switchers. Its home page highlights centralized software updates and system snapshots—features that can make routine maintenance and recovery easier to understand.

For a Windows user, the relevant appeal is a desktop-oriented system with graphical tools, rather than a requirement to manage everything through a command line. But familiarity has limits: Windows-specific applications and some device behaviors may not carry over unchanged. Check your essential software and hardware before committing to a full switch.

Which Linux Mint version is current, and how long is it supported?

The Linux Mint project’s release listing identifies Linux Mint 22.3 Zena Cinnamon as an LTS release supported until April 2029. The project’s FAQ says LTS releases receive five years of support. Support dates apply to the named release; check the release listing when choosing an ISO rather than assuming that every Mint edition or release has the same horizon.

What to check before replacing Windows

Essential applications

List the programs you depend on, including work, school, creative and accessibility tools. Check whether each has a Linux version or a supported web version. If a Windows-only app is essential, do not assume that compatibility layers or a virtual machine will make it work reliably; support varies by application, and compatibility for a particular title is not established here.

Hardware, drivers and peripherals

Check the computer’s Wi-Fi, graphics, audio, printer, scanner and other peripherals. Linux Mint’s FAQ says proprietary ATI/Nvidia drivers are easy to install but are not installed by default. If a device behaves incorrectly, Mint’s release notes point users to Driver Manager for troubleshooting and suggest considering an earlier release if hardware problems persist.

Games and specialized workflows

Verify your specific games, controllers, anti-cheat requirements and other specialized tools rather than relying on a general claim that Linux supports gaming. The same caution applies to professional workflows and peripherals: compatibility is specific to the software and hardware combination.

How to try Linux Mint without rushing a full installation

  1. Back up personal files. Copy important documents, photos and other data to separate storage before changing partitions or installing an operating system.
  2. Read the official instructions. Start from Mint’s documentation page, which links to the Installation Guide and User Guide. Follow the Installation Guide for the setup you intend to use.
  3. Get the ISO and create bootable media. The Installation Guide explains ISO selection and creating bootable media. A USB flash drive is a practical option; the guide does not establish a required capacity or model.
  4. Try a live session if appropriate. Booting from installation media can let you inspect Mint and test basic hardware before installing. Treat this as an initial check, not proof that every device, app or workflow will work after a full switch.
  5. Choose installation options deliberately. The guide covers multimedia codec installation and full-disk encryption. It describes a base operating-system footprint of roughly 15 GB before extra software and personal files, but recommends giving the installation partition adequate room, using 100 GB or more as its recommendation. The base footprint is not a suggested total disk allocation.

What changes in updates, recovery and software maintenance?

Updates

Mint’s Update Manager handles system and software updates. Its Update Manager guide explains the tool and its update workflow. The User Guide also warns that kernel changes can introduce regressions, so a new kernel is not automatically risk-free.

System snapshots and personal-file backups

Timeshift creates system snapshots that can help recover the operating system after a problem. A snapshot is not a substitute for a separate backup of personal files: keep a distinct copy of important documents and media somewhere safe before installation.

Drivers

Some proprietary graphics drivers are not installed by default. Mint provides Driver Manager as a route to manage drivers, but that does not guarantee that every device will work on every computer. Test the hardware that matters to you before relying on Mint for daily use.

Who should try Linux Mint—and who should wait?

  • It is worth trying if you are curious about a different desktop operating system, your core apps are available or replaceable, and you can test your devices before moving your everyday work.
  • Verify first if your job, school or hobby depends on a Windows-only application, a specialized peripheral, or a game with particular compatibility requirements.
  • Do not install until prepared if you have not backed up important files or do not understand the installation choices for your computer. Use Mint’s official guide rather than improvising with disk partitions.

A cautious trial lets you judge the interface and hardware support with less commitment. A complete switch makes sense only after the software and devices you depend on have passed that practical check.
