A game or app crashing after a Windows update may be a compatibility problem, but the timing alone does not prove the update caused it. Windows changes can affect assumptions older software makes about the operating system, security features or system requirements. Start by checking for an app update and a documented Windows issue that matches your exact version and update; then choose the least disruptive applicable fix.
Why a Windows update can affect a game or app
Microsoft Support explains that apps can become incompatible with new Windows versions because of changes to the operating system’s architecture, security features or system requirements. An app or driver may need an update from its publisher to work with the newer release. That makes compatibility one plausible explanation for a new crash—not proof that every crash after an update was caused by Windows.

The pattern can help narrow the possibilities. If only one game fails, its own update, files, settings or driver compatibility may be relevant. If several unrelated apps began failing at the same time, a Windows change is worth checking, but that pattern still does not establish the cause.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMicrosoft’s notices illustrate distinct kinds of problems, not a general finding that Windows updates routinely break games. For example, a Windows 11 version 24H2 upgrade safeguard addressed compatibility with certain Nvidia display-adapter driver versions. A separate safeguard covered the StartIsBack++ and Stardock Start10 Start-replacement apps, with Microsoft advising users to update or uninstall affected apps before upgrading. Those are feature-upgrade compatibility cases, not evidence that a cumulative update caused a particular game crash.

How to identify what changed
- Record the Windows version and update. Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and note the relevant update’s name or KB number and installation date. Also note when the app began failing.
- Check the scope. Record whether one game or app crashes, or whether several unrelated programs do. Note what happens—such as a crash on launch, a freeze or an error message—without assuming the cause.
- Check for an app update. For a Microsoft Store app, check the Store’s library for updates. For a game or other desktop app, check the publisher’s update notes or support page. Update a driver only when the device maker or software publisher recommends a version relevant to the issue.
- Check Microsoft’s notice for your exact Windows release. Use Windows release-health information and match the version, update and symptoms. A notice about a different release or a different symptom is not a diagnosis for your device.
- Choose the least disruptive matching remedy. For an older app, try the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter. Consider removing a recent update only if the timing fits and Microsoft’s recovery guidance applies.
Microsoft’s older-app compatibility guidance recommends checking for an app update first and using the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter if no update is available.

Update the app or game
Install an available update from Microsoft Store or the publisher. Publishers can release a version designed for a newer Windows release, but availability and the fix depend on the specific app. If the problem began immediately after an app update rather than a Windows update, check the publisher’s notes and support guidance for that version.

Run the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter
For an older desktop app that has no suitable update, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters and select Program Compatibility Troubleshooter, then follow its prompts to select the affected app and test suggested settings. Windows interface labels can vary by release. This tool helps address compatibility settings for an app; it is not a universal crash repair, and its suggestions may not resolve the problem.

Windows release-health pages describe known problems tied to particular releases and updates. Match the notice to your Windows version, KB number and symptoms before applying its workaround or waiting for a fix. Microsoft’s safeguard-hold guidance says safeguard holds prevent a device with a known issue from being offered a new feature update. A hold delays an upgrade; it does not itself repair an app that is already crashing.

Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 preview notice for Windows 11 version 26H1, KB5124006 (OS Build 28000.3086), described possible desktop-loading problems after the August 2026 preview update KB5120996 and subsequent updates. It documented a temporary manual explorer.exe launch workaround and a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) mitigation; enterprise-managed devices could receive the mitigation through a version-specific Group Policy. This notice concerns desktop loading and Explorer crashes, not a general game-crash issue.
Known Issue Rollback is a targeted mitigation for a specific Windows change Microsoft has identified as causing a regression. It is not a switch that fixes crashes generally. The February 2025 Windows update notice provides a separate example of KIR instructions; the applicable steps depend on the affected release, update state and, for some managed devices, administrator configuration. Follow the instructions for the exact issue rather than applying a rollback policy from another release.

When removing a Windows update may be appropriate
If the failure began after a recent update, uninstalling that update may help—but only when its timing and Microsoft’s guidance fit the symptoms. Update removal is different from the Compatibility Troubleshooter and from KIR: it is a recovery choice, while KIR is a Microsoft-directed mitigation for a particular regression.

Quick Recap
What to avoid when the cause is uncertain
- Do not conclude that Windows caused the crash based only on the date it started.
- Do not apply a KIR policy, driver workaround or registry change intended for a different Windows release or issue.
- Do not remove multiple updates at once; doing so makes it harder to identify what changed and can complicate recovery.
- Do not assume compatibility mode or a troubleshooter will fix every game. If the relevant notice or publisher guidance points to a specific driver or managed-device policy, use the device maker’s instructions or ask your IT administrator rather than guessing.
