Windows can pause ordinary desktop applications when a supported PC enters Modern Standby, so a long-running AI coding agent may stop progressing while the computer sleeps. The practical, documented option is for an application to request that Windows stay awake during active work with SetThreadExecutionState; it cannot prevent a person from manually putting the PC to sleep, and keeping the request active indefinitely can drain battery.
Why Windows sleep can interrupt an AI coding agent
“Sleep” does not mean one identical thing on every Windows PC. Traditional sleep uses states S1–S3, while supported Modern Standby devices use S0 low-power idle. Microsoft says Modern Standby systems do not support S1–S3. The user-facing Sleep command therefore does not, by itself, identify which power model a machine uses. Microsoft’s Modern Standby overview explains the distinction.

On a Modern Standby system, Windows automatically pauses desktop applications after the system enters standby. That gives a plausible explanation for why an ordinary desktop-based agent may stop making progress during standby. Microsoft documents the operating-system behavior, not a test of AI coding agents or the cause of a particular agent’s interruption. Microsoft’s documentation on Modern Standby describes the pause.
Windows also uses activity and configured power preferences to decide when to sleep. A process that expects to keep running unattended can therefore be affected when Windows considers the PC idle and transitions into a sleep state. The exact result depends on the machine’s supported sleep model and settings.

What an application can request
Windows provides SetThreadExecutionState for an application to tell the system that it is in use. Depending on the flags requested, an application can ask Windows to avoid system sleep, display shutoff, or both. Microsoft describes this API in its SetThreadExecutionState reference and its system sleep criteria documentation.
- System sleep: The application can request that Windows keep the system awake.
- Display shutoff: The application can separately request that the display remain on.
- Manual sleep: The API cannot stop a user from manually putting the computer to sleep.
These requests are a mechanism available to applications, not a special exemption for AI tools. Whether a particular utility makes the correct request, detects failure, and clears the request when its work ends depends on that utility’s implementation.

Use an awake request only while work is active
An application that sets a continuous system-required state should not leave it asserted indefinitely. Microsoft’s System Sleep Criteria page explicitly says: “Avoid holding ES_SYSTEM_REQUIRED | ES_CONTINUOUS indefinitely.” On Modern Standby devices, an ongoing request can increase battery drain. The safer design is to assert the state for a bounded period of active work and clear it when that work completes or is cancelled. Microsoft’s guidance covers this caution.

- Does it request system sleep prevention, display sleep prevention, or both?
- Does it activate only during an active task, and reliably release the request afterward?
- Does it report or handle a failed request?
- Does its behavior account for battery use, especially on a Modern Standby device?
- Does it make clear that manually selecting Sleep still puts the machine to sleep?
What the claimed 90 KB C# fix establishes—and what it does not
The exact title describes a 90 KB C# utility and a successful personal fix, but the utility’s design, availability, and reported result are not independently corroborated here. The Microsoft documentation supports the underlying Windows mechanism, not the existence, size, effectiveness, or implementation details of that particular program. Treat a small C# keep-awake utility as one possible implementation of the documented API, not as an official Microsoft fix or a verified solution.
No official source cited here quantifies how often sleep interrupts AI coding agents, or reports a battery-drain figure for a particular utility. Whether an agent can resume cleanly after a pause is also agent-specific; the Windows sleep documentation does not establish that behavior.
