Why Windows 11 Taskbar Alignment Settings Don’t Move the Start Button

Windows 11’s Taskbar alignment setting moves the icon arrangement, including Start, between Center and Left. It does not move Start independently or relocate the taskbar.

Windows 11’s Taskbar alignment setting changes the alignment of the taskbar icons, including Start; it does not position the Start button separately. The built-in choices are Center and Left. If selecting one appears to do nothing, Microsoft’s instructions establish what the setting is meant to change, but do not identify a universal cause for an unchanged display.

What Taskbar alignment actually changes

Microsoft describes the control as a way to align taskbar icons in the center or on the left. Its Start menu guidance describes that same control as the way to move Start to the side of the taskbar. In other words, Start moves as part of the icon arrangement rather than as an independently positioned button.

The built-in choices are Center and Left. Windows does not document a setting here for arbitrary placement or for moving Start to a different position from the other taskbar icons. See Microsoft’s taskbar customization instructions and Start menu customization instructions.

How to change the alignment

  1. Right-click an empty area of the taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
  2. Expand Taskbar behaviors.
  3. Under Taskbar alignment, select Left or Center.

These are the settings and choices in Microsoft’s documented path; its accessibility guidance also identifies the Center/Left dropdown under Taskbar behaviors: Make it easier to focus on tasks.

Left alignment is not moving the taskbar to the left edge

Choosing Left aligns the icons at the left side of the taskbar along the bottom of the screen. It does not move the taskbar itself to the left edge of the display. Microsoft’s Windows 11 taskbar guidance says the taskbar is positioned at the bottom and does not document a built-in setting to move it to the top or side.

If Start still appears not to move

First confirm that you changed Taskbar alignment, rather than expecting a separate Start-button position control. If you selected Left and the arrangement still looks unchanged, Microsoft’s instructions do not specify a universal reason or a guaranteed fix. The cause cannot be determined from the setting description alone; it depends on what the PC displays and which Windows interface and version it is running.

Before trying registry edits, restarting system processes, or installing third-party utilities, establish the exact symptom and Windows version. Those steps are not part of Microsoft’s documented alignment procedure, and the cited guidance does not establish that they are needed to make the control work.
