Why Windows 11 Shows the Wrong Location—and How to Correct It

Windows 11 may use GPS, nearby networks, an IP address, or a default location. Learn which setting to change—and why one fix may not correct every app or website.

If Windows 11, an app, or a website shows the wrong place, first identify where the result appears: the cause may be Windows’ fallback location, a location estimate from GPS or nearby networks, or a separate app or browser setting. To change Windows’ fallback, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Location, select Set default under Default location, enter the correct address or choose a map point, and save. That setting is a fallback—not a universal override for every location estimate.

Why Windows 11 can show the wrong location

Windows estimates a device’s location using the signals available to it. These can include GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, the device’s IP address, and a configured default location. Which signals are available—and how accurately they indicate a place—varies by device and situation. Microsoft explains these location inputs and the default-location setting in its Windows Location Service and privacy guidance.

The default location is used when Windows cannot detect a more exact location. It can be useful on desktop PCs or devices without Wi-Fi, but setting it does not force every app or website to use that address if another source is available.

Correct Windows’ default location

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
  2. Under Default location, select Set default.
  3. Enter the correct address or choose the right point on the map, then save it.

Microsoft describes this default as a location that Windows, apps, and services can use when a more exact location cannot be detected. If the wrong place appears only in one app or website, changing this fallback may not change that result.

Work out where the incorrect result comes from

Where the wrong location appears What to check
Windows or several apps when precise signals are unavailable Review the Windows default location and location-service settings.
One Store app Check Windows location access and the app’s own location settings.
One website Check the site’s location permission in your browser.
One desktop program Check the program’s own settings and privacy information; it may use methods not shown in Windows’ app-permission list.
A Cloud PC or virtual desktop Check whether location override is enabled and whether the connecting device and remote session both allow location access.

Check Windows location access and app permissions

At Settings > Privacy & security > Location, check whether Location services and Let apps access your location are enabled as intended. Windows also provides controls for reviewing supported apps’ precise-location access and recent use. The controls available can depend on whether you are an administrator and whether device location is enabled.

Not every program appears in the per-app list. Microsoft notes that desktop apps may manage location separately, so check the program’s own settings and privacy policy if only that program is affected. Third-party software may also estimate location using signals such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular connections. See Microsoft’s location and privacy guidance.

If only a website is in the wrong place

A website’s result can depend on browser permission and on the site’s own location service. Microsoft says Edge asks before a website accesses device location, and you can change a site’s location permission in Edge settings. Review the permission for the affected site rather than assuming the Windows default controls it.

If the wrong location appears in a Cloud PC or virtual desktop

Microsoft documents an Allow location override option for remote environments. When configured, apps can use the connecting device’s location rather than the location of the machine hosting the virtual desktop. This requires location services to be on and the remote-connection app to have permission on the connecting device; location services must also be on and override enabled on the remote device. If any of those conditions is missing, the expected location may not be available to remote apps.

When the network or IP address seems to be the problem

If Windows or an app appears to place you near the wrong network location, basic network checks can help distinguish a connectivity issue from a location-estimation issue. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance explains how to check the default gateway with ipconfig and test router connectivity with ping: Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

Those commands test network connectivity; they do not correct a stale geolocation record associated with an ISP, router, or wireless access point. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not provide a definitive procedure for changing a specific inaccurate Wi-Fi or IP geolocation database entry, so a successful connectivity test should not be taken as proof that the location estimate will update.

Does clearing location history fix the current location?

No. Microsoft says local location-history storage and its associated settings were removed in March 2025. Cloud location activity associated with a Microsoft account can be cleared through the account privacy dashboard, but Microsoft does not describe clearing that activity as a way to correct the device’s current location estimate. The current estimate depends on available signals, permissions, and—when needed—the configured default.
